Burrows has a higher ceiling than turnbill?

Does meadows strike out a lot minus these games?

Turnbull is like 26 years old. So yes, I would say so.

Turnbull probably has a higher ceiling, but Burrows has a higher floor because he has a longer history of having better control/command. Turnbull has really good stuff. He's just been in the minors forever because he couldn't command it and was hurt a lot.

Meadows has been striking out a lot. So has Wenceel Perez. They're both 19 so it's not the end of the world, but I tend to look more at BB/K stuff with young guys in those levels more so than BA or other stats. I think it's the main thing to watch with Meadows, in particular, because a lot of draft people thought he had issues with his swing and overall ability to hit. Everything else is there to be an All-Star if he can make enough contact and hit for a high enough average.

Why not call up Castro as well? Mercer sucks

They aren't calling up Castro for a while because they paid Mercer that money and Mercer has a significantly better track record than Jones. Gardenhire sounds like he didn't want to call up Jones because he wasn't hitting even in A ball on rehab assignments. Mercer is a below average/bad hitter, but he's playable. Jones might not be.

What’s the expected order of debut by our pitching prospects?

    Mize
    Burrows
    Faedo
    Manning

Burrows/Funkhouser - both this year sometime
Mize - maybe as early as August, but more likely next year
    Manning - maybe April 2020
    Faedo - maybe mid-2020

I don't think we'll see Manning before May of next year if they have a brain in their head. Even if he's dominant in Erie this year, it makes sense to give him a fulk season there this year and then an acclimation month in Toledo next year to stall service time.

All of it depends on how well they pitch. If Manning is dominating AA like this for another 4-5 starts, they'll bump him up to AAA because it's not going to help him to just mow down guys who can't hit him. I'm guessing they'll do something similar to what they did with Burrows last year and move him to AAA sometime in the middle of the season and see how he handles it (health and performance permitting). From there, they'll go into the offseason with some kind of plan.

Isn’t AA better than AAA in terms of talent? For the most part, AAA is filled with mlb rejects that can’t cut it at the major league level.

I lot of those rejects were great at AA. They might not be major leaguers, but they can still kill mistakes and have a plan of attack that AA talent doesn't have. Brennan Boesch tuned up AAA pitchers with a .825 OPS at age 30 - facing a guy like him is great experience for a guy like Manning prior to pitching in the MLB.

It varies from org to org. There might be more talent in the general sense at AA than AAA. I would bet the AAA guys are smarter and a closer approximation to the big leagues in terms of process, intelligence, consistency, etc.

You are correct. I thought they bumped him up to AAA when Faedo went to AA.

Everybody expected then to promote him. I thought you were right, and went to look just to see how long if took.

Fulmer spent all of his age 22 season in AA, then started '16 in the rotation, but the Tigers were still trying to compete in '16.

From looking at his numbers, he had a bad July (June wasn't great, either), so they probably kept him there because of that.

All of this is going to come down to performance and health. If Manning is healthy and pitches like an ace in AA, he'll be in Toledo by the start of July, at the latest. Same with Mize. I don't know how quickly they'll want to call them to the big leagues (especially if they stay relatively healthy in the MLB rotation) because we haven't really gotten to the point of the rebuild where we actually see how they want to deal with prospects getting called up, but I think they'll continue to push them at the minor league level as long as they're performing.

Rogers is probably the only one, and I don't have a great feeling about that one. They tried to change a lot with his hitting approach this offseason and I don't know if that was a good idea considering his skill set.

Are you suggesting his defense will go south because he’ll be focusing on his new swing?

I'm suggesting that, no matter how good your defense is, there's a level you have to be at as a hitter that makes you playable. I'm not sure Rogers will reach the level at the plate of being playable as a #1 or 1a type catcher to be playable that often. I think he'll hang around as a backup no matter what, but that's not really a prospect in that scenario.

He is when there are no better options. Rogers is definitely playable if he be a 650 OPS and be an above average defender

We're talking about different things, then. Anyone is "playable" if you don't have other options. If you're playing someone who hits like that, though, you're always going looking for other options.

So should he return to whatever approach he had that put him on our radar to begin with. Is that the question?

His approach in Houston was that he's limited as a hitter, so be patient, take walks, and hit for power. He struck out a lot and really struggled last year to start. He turned it around in the second half, but this offseason the org went on a strikeout/2-strike approach kick and wanted him to become more of a hitter. Most people don't think he's capable of being that type of guy if that's what they're trying to do.

If Rogers works in the big leagues as a #1 catcher, it's probably something like a .220/.320/.420 with a high K rate. They seem to want him to try an approach that would allow for a higher BA and fewer Ks, which is fine, but I think most prospect people would agree that would come at the expense of a lot of his power and possibly some of his OBP skills.

Rogers was considered the top defensive catcher in his class and still didn't go until the 3rd round. He didn't hit at all in college, and him turning into what he did in Houston's org made him into an actual prospect. There's not a ton of offensive tools there.

Lot of varying opinions on Greene. I'm currently voting for CJ Abrams, but people are a little down on him, as well. Both Abrams and Greene were at a big tournament two weekends ago and draft gurus who were there didn't come away that impressed with either based on what I've read.

Not sure how the waiver process works early in season, if it’s by record, it’s doubtful he gets to us. We are probably number. 7-8 in AL.
