Three kids got busted for reeking like the nastiest skunk weed that I’ve ever smelled on their way back into school for a basketball game. I legit thought that a skunk had walked into our school.
Thanks to the snow and cold days, Friday's PD was rescheduled to regular school as was today's Presidents Day Booo
We build in four days for snow. If we have more than four high schools lengthen the school day. Middle and elementary don't have to do anything because our daily contact time is longer
We did extended school days last year after the pipes busted and extended winter break an additional 8 days. It sucked, ran from mid-February to mid-April
Trying a new bluetooth setup for my music when I teach kids Love to use music for transitions and whatnot and I like having the controls at my tips Sometimes get a bit too sweaty during my classes so my phone registers my leg sweat as finger inputs Which of course inadvertently shuffles my metal rock etc playlist And then I try to stop it but the sweat confuses the phone for multiple inputs My kids are like Ew you listen to that music Why does it sound like screaming And all they ever want to listen to is Juju on that Beat and Uptown Funk
Had a student and a kid on our football team pass over the weekend due to complications from the flu and pneumonia. This has been terrible.
I’ve stared at this for 8min, scribbled some nonsense on scratch paper, and I’ve still got nothing. Halp math teachers.
Found the solution, don’t think I would have gotten here on my own :( I used to be smart. Spoiler: solution
Anybody ever read the book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"? This book is shaking up how I think about teaching and school
Kicking my ass… I really like the subject matter and I love the kids but the rest of the job is overwhelming for both my wife and me.
I teach Business classes to Hs and I run the DECA club. The hardest part is that everything I’m doing is brand new so I have nothing to build on. I’m starting everything from scratch.
I felt the same way my first year. Overwhelmed, little to no support from the administrative staff at the time. (I also had terrible classroom management). I would get to the school often before 7AM and leave often after 6pm. I had 3 preps, didn’t know how properly construct a lesson plan and all the grading. I made the decision that students weren’t going to be the reason if I decided to quit. Came back with a new mentality for my 2nd year and won most improved teacher award. It helped that I only had 2 preps that year (two subjects that taught my 1st year) so I had all the material made, just needed to find how I wanted to present it better to the students. I also came into my own as far as teaching styles. Found grading apps like Zip Grade (life saver). Trust me, your second year will go much more smoothly if you’re fortunate enough to teach the same subject because you won’t have to create from scratch. Best of luck to you bro.

When I got this job, my mom (who taught for 25+ years) told me “don’t quit after your first year; everyone hates their first year”. I thanked her for the awesome pep talk.
Nobody made ICDC but a few kids made states. I’m in NJ. We’re still small, only 12 kids but I think we’re going to open competition up next year to a wider student base.
1 week before school started my first year, I got my schedule. I thought I would be teaching senior English and audio/visual production class. Learned I had 3 sections of a Intro to Film & Video...a course with no curriculum, no materials, and no standards (just use the theatre standards and replace the word “theatre” with “film”). Had to create the entire course from scratch. I would stay up to midnight the night before creating the next day’s lessons. I was literally 1 day ahead of the kids in creating the content. Now, 10 years later, I have streamlined and perfected the course to my liking and it’s my favorite one to teach. You’ll get there once you find a groove.
Awesome man. CTSOs are a great way to get students involved and build relationships with them. My advice is to make it more than just about competitors, give them some leadership roles in the organization in the classroom, and let them run it.
Kid came in the office visibly upset because he got an email he's in danger of being placed on academic suspension. (Which only happens after you've already been on academic probation, then not pulled your grades up). He's all, well no one told me and if I had known I'd have studied more. It's like, you didn't realize there were certain grades you had to make or they'd put you out of college?
I remember being in the computer lab one day, being nosy I glanced at my neighbors screen. She had a .8 GPA for the semester and kept refreshing the page like it was going to magically change
State testing period ... sigh. I remember 3 years ago the kids were so bold, that they actually started ordering pizza during the day
We do state AND MAP tests Our language Arts teachers lose like 10 days per year to testing. And the state tests are awful
Our students have been spreading the rumor that the PARCC tests were found illegal by a court but we (the teachers at their HS) decided to change the name of them to NJ-SLA so that we can get around the law and torture them further.
I like MAP that it predicts and shows growth. And the scores are immediate. Our state test scores aren't released for like 6 months. Sometimes we're told there was some sort of problem with the test and we don't ever see scores.
It looks like this will be the first time in 4 YEARS that our tests will count. 4 years in a row they had these computerized tests ready to go....and the system broke down.
Mine was similar in Nebraska. The 5 hot girls in a school of 2,500 were all in DECA. Made it to Nationals, but didn't go.
My wife was in DECA and went to nationals in high school. She still brings it up randomly and talks about how much she loved the teacher that ran it 15 years later. What you guys are doing makes a difference
Got a new, much smaller scale version of a ONE ONE WERE today. Question: Which character reaches his goal the fastest? Correct Answer: Andy Answer given by 2 dumbasses who sit next to each other: donabei
It's a type of 'business competition'. They give you a scenario and you have 30 minutes to prep. Then you have 10 minutes to pitch your ideas to the judges. Winner is whoever was most persuasive. From Google: DECA is an international association of high school and college students and teachers of marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality, and marketing sales and service. Spoiler: Sample Scenario EVENT SITUATION You are to assume the role of director of marketing for FEEL GOOD, a chain of fitness centers across the nation. The president of the company (judge) has asked you to develop a marketing plan that will bring in new members during the off-peak months of July through September. FEEL GOOD has over 2,000 locations across the nation. Each location offers members a wide variety of exercise and cardiovascular equipment, personal trainers and classes led by fitness experts. FEEL GOOD also offers a variety of smoothies, juices and protein bars at snack counters located inside each center. The busiest season at each FEEL GOOD location is the start of the new year. Many people choose to make new year’s resolutions that include living a healthier lifestyle. Memberships during the months of January and February almost double the number of new memberships in the other months combined. The months with the lowest number of new memberships is also identical in every FEEL GOOD location. July, August and September prove to be poor months for beginning a new fitness regiment. The president of FEEL GOOD (judge) has asked you to develop a marketing plan that will increase new memberships in the months of July through September. The president (judge) thinks one approach is to communicate the feelings of determination and starting fresh that arise in January to potential customers. The president (judge) wants you to develop other considerations in your marketing plan to encourage membership in the low enrollment months. The president (judge) wants you to include specific marketing strategies, primary and secondary target markets and communications channels in your marketing plan. You will present your plan to the president (judge) in a role-play to take place in the president’s (judge’s) office. The president (judge) will begin the role-play by greeting you and asking to hear your ideas. After you have presented your plan and have answered the president’s (judge’s) questions, the president (judge) will conclude the role-play by thanking you for your work.
my district canceled school because of teacher protests at the statehouse today. 10,000 people ended up down there
