He had a major public blowup in a bar somewhere and ESPN fired him/banned him from appearing on any ESPN show.
No idea if it’s legitimate but I saw people on twitter saying “Michael” was a response to something coming down on the show from ESPN. Maybe the company forced them to talk about tiger woods on Monday? The whole thing Monday with them taking calls about woods and his win was very tongue in cheek.
It absolutely is, at the very least, a tongue-in-cheek/satirical response to something coming down on them from above. The whole Michael thing is obviously not serious and I don't think they would've cooked it up out of nowhere. Dan would not be playing along with it and enjoying it if it weren't
To me it sounds like he got promoted. Although I appreciate all of the corporate speak. Pretty funny.
It's a tongue-in-cheek/satirical response to fan criticism. The show has change a lot since becoming ESPN's cash cow and there has been a lot of blow back.
I know the local morning show callers have been bitching a lot about them not being as Miami-centric as they said they would when they went to ESPN.
The show is still great, but it’s nowhere near as miamicentric as it used to be. A lot of it has to do with Miami sports being at an all time low right now. Can’t be cocky miami guys when there’s nothing to be cocky about.
Yeah makes sense. The fish, fins and heat are trash. I did enjoy the wade discussions at the end of the season because I like him. But he’s also a national name
I actually miss the race discussions. I didn't always agree with Dan, but it made for good radio. It seems to that ESPN has stopped them from going there.
As somebody who has no ties to Miami, the local hour is my favorite part of the show, and I'm so happy I stumbled upon it on the podcast.
I hate when she screams and yells. Plus that analysis of hers that dan is always raving about had her saying that baker mayfield may not be that great cuz he’s so much cooler than all the other quarterbacks in the league or some shit. Riveting stuff.
I know I mentioned it a few days ago, but I think I laugh harder at the local hour than I do any comedy podcast I listen to. Wednesday's episode where they were discussing which 5 condiments they'd choose to have come out of their fingers for the rest of their life had me dying.
If there's one thing I've noticed, I feel like the discussions are overall less interesting than they used to be---or more specifically they happen less often. The old formula was Dan is interesting, Stugotz has comedy relief, and they have some small inside jokes to make each other laugh. Now, the whole show is trying to make each other laugh, just talking about Stugotz.....and then some of the interesting stuff. And even then they make an effort to disrupt the interesting stuff way more than before. Overall it's all the same stuff to me (with more guests but minus limited fakes and suey'ing people) but just balanced way differently.
Yeah you're definitely right. They don't even try to hide it though, like when they bust in with the magic crate of content anytime Dan starts steering it towards anything remotely controversial. I enjoy both versions of the show, so I'm still fine with it. The more Billy and Chris, the better.
This is exactly why I stopped listening to the local hour. Chris and Billy make for terrible radio. The show has absolutely changed, but I guess that should have been expected when they became a morning show. Much more sports talk and less of Dan finding interesting topics to cover.
I love billy. He’s probably my favorite from the shipping container. Pipo is an amazing character. Chris and Roy are ok and each have their moments of brilliance and cringyness. I wish I could go back and listen to an hour from 3-4 years ago when I first started listening and they were an afternoon show to see how different it was. Shows change and evolve, I get it. Jim Rome used to be great when things like the rat family, bum smack, and Kirstie alley fat jokes were routine show topics but as they expand and get more popular they seem to change.
I listen to the podcast through apple podcast app and they only go back about a month. Maybe it goes back longer on their espn page.
I love the shipping container but I feel like the whole show is getting stretched too thin and it’s affecting the quality. They still have some great stuff and I’m not going to knock them for getting paid. They just need to admit to themselves that Cote derails the show (not in a funny way anymore), Mina isn’t funny, Spain has probably run her course and, though it pains me, SVG mails in 95% of his appearances. Amin is still good and there needs to be more King Roy. I’m just glad that Fahey fuck got fired so I don’t have to hear any more analysis like “Quarterbacks who complete passes throw for more yards than quarterbacks who don’t”. No fucking shit there, James Joyce.
