Decided to make my mother-in-law a barn door. Bonus pic of MIL at end of post... Started out with the cheapest wood I could find, a Norwegian white wood from Lowe’s. It’s bowed nature was tortuous The MIL vacillated on a million stains... Finally settled on American Chestnut She was very specific about the design right down to the type of screw. So I went to work. Still waiting on MIL to pick out door handles and the guides for the bottom. Total cost of materials was $175. Crossposting in woodworking thread.
Rail and guides from amazon. They have everything you need there for any size door(s). Screws and wood from Lowe’s.
Yes. Chocolate donuts. https://www.the-mainboard.com/index...own-thread-2017.162085/page-527#post-12460837 I have a good story involving her, a bible and fried chicken if you are interested.
When I was in medical school, at the Tulane School of Medicine, my wife and I were living in an apt. It had a weird entry where you would step through the front door and then immediately you are faced with a flight of stairs and you have nowhere else to go but up the stairs. Well my mother-in-law was visiting us one weekend and she showed up with a Caniac Combo from Cane’s, an extra large box of fried chicken, and of course her equally large King James Bible which she takes with her everywhere. I start helping her husband with the luggage. She predictably focuses on her fried chicken and bible. Now back then she was pre-gastric bypass so pushing 400 pounds. Myself and my FIL had already taken a round of luggage up the stairs and into the apt by the time she reached the front door. I start to go back out to their car and right as I turn the corner for the narrow hallway with the stairs I notice she is 1/3 of the way up. Not a chance I’m squeezing by her so I wait. But almost immediately she trips and falls forward into the stairs. I’m paralyzed with fascination as her whole body is face down against the stairs and by some miracle she hasn’t started to slide back down the stairs. Also, incredibly, she did not lose her grip on the Bible in one hand or the Cane’s in the other. But now she is struggling to get up as her hands are occupied and her weight is tremendous. You can almost see in her face trying to judge which item in her hand she is going to let go of, that yummy fried chicken or the book of God. Ultimately she decides to let go of the King James Bible and it makes a loud noise as it crashes to the bottom of the stairs. The fried chicken was saved and she hoisted herself back up. It was an incredible sight.
Had an interesting sight at the house today. Wife stopped by to check it out and called me to say we have palm trees in our yard. That would be great except we didn’t order the tropical landscape package. Landscaper installed at the wrong house. Builder was already on it and having them install the correct landscape package.
Update: AHS is covering the cost of a new compressor but the coolant isn’t covered in the warranty. Even though we have up to 5k in HVAC in the policy. Out of pocket cost they quoted me was $400 to $600 and best case scenario they’ll come out next Thursday to fix it. Sounds about right. Not thrilled but it’s better than “3k out of pocket, go fuck yourself”.
flower question: what category (shade, part shade, part sun, or sun) flowers should go in this pot? we got part-shade before and they don't seem to be doing very well. i'm thinking we should try part sun the barrel was there when we bought the house and the concrete underneath is likely stained, so we're just trying to make it look decent
Nice doggo. Sure try full sun. Too hot now but pansies do well in anything spring and fall. Also I'd recommend sealing where the step meets the walkway
great thank you sir! went out to take the picture and the dog had to see what i was doing. i'll definitely look into sealing that as well, previous homeowners didn't seem to have given a shit about the house
I'm in the same boat. Lots of deferred capital work I inherited. I would just be worried about water getting under that slab. If you do seal (concrete and whatnot) make sure it's graded dos that water doesn't pool there. I'm not an expert and will defer to others but that's my 2 cents
Dropped a metal ruler on our recently redone hardwoods today, and of course the corner hits at the perfect angle. God fucking damnit.
I know that feeling. We got a custom made table and the first time we hung out in the space my then 2 year old smashed about 15 chips in it when I went to grab something and my friends talked over it.
Have a hook up to get wood-look tile at-cost. The tile we love just sold out and it will take a month to get more. Options, try to delay starting the contractor 2 weeks or go somewhere else and pay more money for lesser tile. What do you think is the current plan?
I don't agree with lech on many things (like him encouraging a man whom he knew to be depressed to kill himself) but I agree with him here.
Should've countersunk those screw holes. Looks good though. She picked out a good stain for the look.
Going to be needing one soon, how do I find a good home inspector? My realtor prob has a good referral I’d assume?
If I was making my own doors I definitely wood, but for the MIL she wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between countersunk and doing what I did with my impact driver.
What is this thing and what do I do with it? House was built in 1923 and this cut out sits about 12-15 feet from the back of the house. We’ve only been here for a week so don’t @ me about the weeds.
One last review of the paint sprayer operators manual and then I’m gonna head out and make this trash tan house a pretty gray house
I would have the contractor wait. If that’s what you want, don’t settle to save a few weeks. You will regret it down the road.
