Good articles on the Navy collisions a few years ago https://features.propublica.org/navy-accidents/uss-fitzgerald-destroyer-crash-crystal/ https://features.propublica.org/navy-accidents/us-navy-crashes-japan-cause-mccain/
oh shit didn’t realize the mccain one had an article too really enjoyed the fitzgerald one today. graphics really made it even better imo
I was reading this at work this week and the guy who sits next to me is from Long Island. Starting talking to him about it and he knew like the whole story. He referred to the whole industry as "The Shitter Mafia" lol

This story is absolutely insane. https://www.thecut.com/2019/04/larr...003.72011887.1557627020-1158099201.1553086869
The craziest part to me was the girl who went to Harvard and Colombia Med then dropped out of her residency in Cali to move in with this crazy person.
It's fucked up but also weirdly impressive. I'm positive I could not convince a group of college girls to abandon their families and give up everything behind some fabricated conspiracy theories. How did he do that shit?
Good read. Sad story. You can find the video of Claudia sitting on the edge of the bed saying she poisoned him online
I listened to a podcast about that chick. Totally mindblowing. I dated a girl in college who was from a lot of money and after school she moved to New York and started running in those kinds of trust fund-ish, arty circles. It honestly doesn't surprise me that a bunch of those people got taken. A lot of those people barely notice money as a concept. The one piece that surprised me is how much rope some of those hotels gave her. I guess you don't want to upset someone they think is a very wealthy client but good god how many "oh the money is on its way" excuses do you get?
read a couple things by this author and have enjoyed both of them. hoping to check more of his stuff out on photographer william eggleston's most famous picture: https://www.oxfordamerican.org/magazine/item/1442-perfectly-boring on his relative and the titanic disaster: https://believermag.com/the-disaster-and-how-some-escaped/
i loved the guy posting memes about how tough he was and how people who lived off the government were moochers was on disability, demanding the county play peacekeeper and saying they should provide free counseling for him not that he’s wrong on those demands but lol at trashing BIG GUBMINT and then crying about them not catering to your every need i think the shooting was justified but he’s a hypocritical moron so i don’t feel too bad for him
I think I'd find him guilty of the current manslaughter option....I just can't see letting a guy off for shooting someone in the back. That being said, he was in a pretty shitty spot thinking this guy was going to kill him and having zero help from the police. Would have been more justified if he killed him when Knight showed up with one of his buddies.
yeah but him taking the phone is so big. he had no money, no way to get to civilization and had a crazy guy threatening him. that phone was his only link to help and taking it may as well have been a death sentence. i guess it’s still manslaughter but idk i feel like he didn’t have a choice
I thought this article on the suicide epidemic in the West was good: https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/suicide-rate-america-white-men-841576/
posted it in the depression thread. really good read and definitely got me a bit choked up multiple times. this line in particular really stuck with me
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/06/24/liu-cixins-war-of-the-worlds good read even if you don't know the writer
I was thinking the same thing when I read it. It seems there have been a handful of similar articles posted here over the years....but, each one is interesting. These people are definitely sociopaths/crazy.
We had some people open up a restaurant next door that were just pure conmen and it blew me away they managed to con so many large companies for so many years all over the country plus bilk Chinese investors. They probably aren't done yet. https://www.franchisetimes.com/June...us-spot-suit-says-after-EB-5-deal-goes-wrong/
