before the Santa Fe sport my wife had a Mazda and it was a piece of shit. She has a knack for buying awful cars, so I’m trying to take the lead on this as much as I can.

how long ago was that? the CX-5 and CX-9 are pretty much the kings of the crossover segment until you're dropping 20k+ over their cost.

hers was a 2010, sold it in 2016 at which point it was having all types of mechanical issues shy of 100k. She doesn’t like the body style of most crossovers either, she wants something that looks like a SUV.

Does she have any reason to have an SUV besides wanting to sit up high?

well we need 6/7 seats due to kids and cargo. The preference for a more “traditional” SUV opposed to the crossover type is almost exclusively due to looks.

I doubt that. Almost all police are moving to the Explorers/Tahoes. That supply will hurt all Explorers, even the nice ones.

police cruisers are a different model. The Explorer interceptors are going for 10k less than the base models.

she drives like a grandmother, so I doubt it.

    Bumping this for advice

Going to probably test drive a Colorado Z71 and a Tacoma tomorrow, both 2018s. Anyone have experience with either of these vehicles? Without driving either of them, I'm leaning towards a Tacoma. I feel they hold value a lot longer than every other midsize truck.

Hey guys look at me please. End of the month has sped things up and went back again to the interwebs for quotes. Visited 2 dealers on Saturday, Dealer 1 fucked me with wrong quote on car and dealer 2 was not aggressive from the start and didn't have the right package to begin with. So went back to anonymous internet info seeker.

I've got a dealer with two of the exact same models on color and interior (which is fine with me) gave me the lowest price so far. Hit up 6-7 different dealers in LA/OC to give them a chance as it is a popular model but a has a pair of of different packages that make it slightly rare. Maybe they can make a trade.

Internet offer from the dealer with 2 called/sent offer ~$3k off what the KBB invoice says. This sounds like a really good deal already. But how much can I realistically get off from negotiations? I'm thinking of to offer another $1500 off and negotiate from there, settle halfway is my thought. They only know I am purchasing, potentially financing (side note: if they give me 3% or less and I would or I am buying cash (no soonergrad)). They never asked about a trade in on the phone (others did) which is 10 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have a number in mind on the trade in, but as long as the don't low ball the shit out of me I would take it.

This is my first time buying from a dealer so maybe I am ignorant (insert Michael Jackson South Park)

When we bought last time I did a lot of trying to get a great deal. I remember some site maybe called TrueCar where you could put stuff in and it was supposed to be hassle free. Did all that and then went and decided to try and negotiate myself. Was better when I did it myself.

Just bought my new 2015 Audi A6 3.0. Night blue, with the nugget brown interior. Bought it online through Vroom, they shipped the vehicle within 7 days right to my door. 7 days to try it out or 250 miles, great experience. Fuck going to the dealership, vroom the "uber" of buying cars.

Oh and I picked up the ride 2-3k under market value imo.

2019 Forrester is about a month old now.

Drives really well. Still trying to adjust to the auto-shut off at stop lights and the only thing I really don’t like, that I didn’t know going in, is the trouble Subaru has had with their radio units in the last few years. There’s evidently a class action suit in discover stage because of constant problems with everything related to their head unit. I’ve had some aggravation with Bluetooth randomly dropping and CarPlay being a pain in the ass but nothing else.

Figure out the number* you want to pay using research, KBB value, down payment, trade in, etc, and then go tell the salesman. He’ll say no way and then you leave. He’ll call you back that day with a better price, but not what you asked for. Say no thanks again. He’ll call you back again the next day or 2 with an offer that’s ~$500 ish off from yours. I’d accept at that point but you can keep playing ball if you want.

*This only works assuming you’re giving a reasonable number. They can do anything they want to get to the number ie giving you more dealership cash or more for your trade in. Doesn’t matter how they do it, if they want to move the car they’ll do it.

Looking at selling my BMW now though because I need more room with the kids.

Think I’ve narrowed it down to an Escalade or Range Rover. Anyone have either? Thoughts on them?

Range Rovers are fantastic when working properly. If you buy used, just make sure to get a good extended warranty. When they get up past 75k miles the service work gets expensive as fuck.

If you’re going to buy an Escalade wait till next year when they add super cruise.

    It’s the tits.

I was in the middle size SUV market. I hated the Velar, but the sport was nice. Not nearly as roomy as an Escalade.

Really enjoyed the X5 so I’m sure the X7 is a peach.

I ended up in an XC60 that I love to death. I’m already planning for the 2021 hybrid XC90 with level 4 autonomy.
