    1. Citizen Soldiers: The US Army from the Normandy Beaches to the Bulge to the Surrender of Germany (Stephen E. Ambrose) - 8/10
    2. The Master and Margarita (Mikhail Bulgakov - Burgin/O'Connor Translation) - 9.5/10
    3. The Personality Brokers: The Strange History of Myers-Briggs and the Birth of Personality Testing (Merve Emre) - 6.5/10
    4. Washington Black (Esi Edugyan) - 6/10
    5. Hello World: Being Human in the Age of Algorithms (Hannah Fry) - 8.5/10
    6. SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome (Mary Beard) - 9/10
    7. Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus (Rick Perlstein) - 9.5/10

    8. The Right Stuff (Tom Wolfe) - 9/10
    9. Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America (Erik Larson) - 10/10 -
As I mentioned earlier, this is insanely good. Maybe the perfect piece of narrative nonfiction. Seems like most of you have read this already so I don't feel the need to go too deep here but I really enjoyed how he weaved in the fair experiences of some famous Americans into the story (Keller, Buffalo Bill, etc). Feel dumb for not reading this earlier.
    10. Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History (S.C. Gwynne) - 9/10 - This was really great, too. I love reading and watching documentaries about the American West so this was right up my alley and something I've been putting off for a while. Frankly, had I not read Devil in the White City before this one, I may have rated it higher. That said, if it was to make a critique, it sometimes felt like this was really just a history of the Comanches and those who hunted them and not as much about Quanah. That's being picky though. The story flowed very well for this kind of history and I hope to read more of Gwynne's work, particularly the book about Stonewall Jackson.

Up Next - 1) Where The Crawdads Sing 2) Exit West

You should check out Larsson's other books -

    Id rank them

Thunderstruck - How British and American law enforcement used jumped on the wireless telegram technology to hunt for a trans atlantic murder.
In the Garden of Beasts . - The American Ambassador to Germany during the rise of the Nazis
Issac's Storm - Galveston Hurricane and the beginnings of modern meteorology
Dead Wake - Sinking of the Lusitania. This one wasnt as good as the others. More of a straight history book than a non fiction narrative. Still informative though.

    12. A Man on the Moon - Andrew Chaikin (9/10)
    13. Apollo - Charles Murray and Catherine Cox (10/10)

This book is about the birth of NASA from NACA through the Apollo missions. It focuses on the engineers, politicians, and mission control that led the development, testing, and operation of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions, and what it was like in Mission Control during the flights, focusing on Apollo 8, 11, 12, and 13. This was great because it gives the stories that aren't part of the popular knowledge.

    28. It by Stephen King (8/10)
    29. Outland by Dennis E Taylor (8.5/10)
    30. Hunting LeRoux by Elaine Shannon (8/10)

Here and Now and Then -
Good time jumping sci fi book. About this time cop that gets stuck in the past. Fun, quick read. If you liked Dark Matter or All Our Wrong Todays - I thnk you'll like this one

The White Darkness -Story about the first person to walk across Antartica. I was really disappointed. The last book of his that I read (Killers of the Flower Moon) was amazing. This was basically a longform article that discussed his journey, but there was no narrative to it. Just like - Here's a thing that someone did. At least it was short, I guess.

Where the Crawdads Sing - loved this book. More thoughts in the Book of the Month thread

The Republic for Which it Stands: The United States During Reconstruction and the Gilded Age -
This was a heavy almost academic level book on the time period. You always barely learn about these time periods in US history, and definitely as separate eras. This was really good about connecting the two, showing how Reconstruction ran into The Gilded age, and the lasting impact of both

    It -
Had a love hate relationship w this one. Overall I enjoyed it, but with most King books, I also get annoyed feeling like these door stop novels are just an excuse to write a million different short stories that he tangentially ties together. Also hated to the two timelines being told concurrently.

This is often how I feel about King novels. At the end of it, I enjoyed it and glad I read it. But get really frustrated by this narrative style along the way. Oh well.

Outland - I really liked the Bobiverse so I checked it out. This is a quick popcorn book but I loved it. It's like Stargate meets Land of the Lost.

Hunting LeRoux - I didnt like this as much as The Mastermind. Mastermind focuses more on Leroux and does a good job showing just how much of an evil genius he is. This one focused more on the Law Enforcement aspect and how they actually caught him. It was interesting, but I dont think I would have appreciated it as much without knowing exactly how big of a criminal Leroux is.

Also shout out to Daniel Ocean for finding this one.

Appreciate the feedback on the White book. He was on a podcast I like, Tides of History with Patrick Wyman, but I haven't listened to his episode yet. He was great on Ken Burns' The West.

    18. For Whom The Bell Tolls / Ernest Hemingway (8.5/10)
Took me a little while to get into but I loved it by the end. First Hemingway book I've read other than Old Man and the Sea. There's a lot in this book as far as psychological things the characters are thinking but also a good actual plot.
When Pablo made off with the dynamite the night before the mission I was like
It's a little weird with the "thee" and "thou" but it's cool he used that as a device to approximate Spanish in English. There are certainly some unforgettable scenes in this book from Pilar describing what happened in the town to the fascists to Maria letting on what the fascists did to her :ohdear:

BigRed did you finish it yet? What'd you think?

Yeah idk if I want to commit to something that long right now. But it's calling my name from my shelf. May call an audible when I finish the last 20 pages of "This Explains Everything", we'll see

Overall, I thought it was enjoyable, but not as much as I enjoyed The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms. I was hungry for more action rather than the drama that ensued. That being said, I enjoyed the conversations on the political struggle, which helped me understand more on the Spanish Civil War, something I know very little about. And I found it intriguing how the protagonist spoke about his distaste in suicide, a tragedy that plagued Hemingway's family - so it also made me a little uncomfortable on Hemingway's telling uneasiness to forgive his father at the time of the book’s writing.

The thee and thou did throw me off a little. And I struggled with the Spanish vocabulary, but did enjoy the flavor it added.

But what I was a little disappointed in, was how it felt wordy for Hemingway’s style. He usually uses pointed, quick sentences with a fast moving plot. And to me, this book felt drawn out for his style. I still enjoyed it 7/10, but not as highly as I did with A Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms.

    19. This Explains Everything: Deep, Beautiful, and Elegant Theories of How the World Works / edited by John Brockman (5/10)
Finished my other book at lunch. Pretty meh overall. I got sucked in because the cover mentions some of my favorite nonfiction authors: Nassim Nicholas Taleb, Jared Diamond, Steven Pinker, Richard Dawkins, Sherry Turkle etc. I think I'd have liked the book better if they talked about their own work instead of work they admired. One problem was a lot of people picked the same thing to talk about: Darwin and Einstein are the favorites of many scientist and social scientist types. Another problem was the entries were just so short (2-4 pages) that you're barely scratching the surface of whatever. However, my biggest hope from the book was that it would open my mind to some new stuff and I found a lot of things that look good to add to the to read list from things that are mentioned

Second book in the Pines trilogy. Solid read, flew through the last third. Set up the third book solidly and am curious to see how it ends.
I think I'm going to start In the garden of the beasts by Erik Larson next, and then the diary of Anne Frank (read when I was in middle school) next before going to Europe in July.

Wayward - This was a fun quick series. Good action, sci fi ect.

Chernobyl - HBO mini series is awesome, and so is this.

The Cuckoo's Calling - Was underwhelmed. Had high expectations that comes w JK Rowling. It was really well written but at the end of the day it's just a dry english detective novel, which isnt really my cup of tea. If youre into that genre, you'd probably like it a lot more than I did.

Moved through it very fast and enjoyed pretty much all of it, I was wrong about what I thought would happen in the ending and I'm not sure if that weighs a little on my rating of it. Easily one of the top books I've read this year and one of best fiction books I've read recently.

Just got a few under my belt so far. Finished that GRRM Fire and Blood and some Conan the Barbarian short stories. Just picked up and started reading Dune for the first time. About a quarter of the way through it and am enjoying it. Nice change of pace from the High Fantasy novels I’ve been reading of late.

    21. The First Wave by Alex Kershaw 8/10 This is the first of Kershaw's books that has disappointed me, it wasn't bad but a book would have to be really awful about World War II to bother me probably. I feel like I didn't find much new in it though and that could be because I have read a lot of D-Day books.

    • It's great
    • It's long
    • I gained some new perspective on this period in history. Too much to list, but two things that stood out: never realized how dangerous it could be for a black person to leave the South. I figured if you had money for a train ticket that was it. Didn't realize that stuff went on to thwart peoples' efforts and try to hold them in the South. Also, didn't realize quite how the racism in the North/West worked compared to Jim Crow. I knew things weren't sunshine and roses for blacks outside the South, but I didn't know exactly how it all played out.
    • The book is basically the world's longest newspaper feature article -- it's by a career journalist and is insanely detailed on these peoples lives. A couple times I was like "come on, do I need to know the next door neighbor's first name if they're only gonna be mentioned once?" But overall I have to hand it to this author because she didn't miss a thing and she made the stories come alive.
    • One more thing that was kind of revelatory, I never realized how observable the general migration patterns were even today. Basically people from GA/FL/NC/SC tended to go to NYC/Philly/Washington, people from AL/MS tended to go to Chicago/Milwaukee/St. Louis/Ohio, people from LA/TX went out to California. I certainly knew many people growing up in SC that had relatives up in Philly/NYC.
    • Forgive me if anything I said above was ignorant; I read because I like to learn more

This was one of my biggest takeaways when I read this last year. I always remembered my classmates growing up talking about going to visit family in NY or DC but never really thought deeper about it.

As for Midnight, I thought it was decent but it's been a long time since I read it. I don't think you'd really be missing out on anything if you put it down.

    11. Where The Crawdads Sing (Delia Owens) - 8/10
    - Fun read and I'm glad this was suggested as part of the book club as it wasn't something I'd normally read. I shared more thoughts in the book club thread and I think most folks in this thread have read it so no need to go too deep. This may sound patronizing but I feel like this would be a good book to suggest to someone that doesn't read much.
    12. Exit West (Mohsin Hamid) - 6/10 - Kinda torn on this one. For starters, Hamid is a gifted writer from a prose standpoint. This book is mostly about the refugee experience and the personal tolls that experience can have on people. I thought it started out pretty well describing the living conditions of an unnamed Middle Eastern county embroiled in civil war and a budding relationship between a young man and woman. He also challenges the assumptions that a Westerner may have about the people of those countries. However, the author then introduces these magical "doors" that pop up and whisk our main characters away to safer environs. He also interjects the main plot with short interludes where he gives brief looks into the lives of other, non-related immigrants. I enjoyed this book when it focused on the main characters, their refugee journey, and how that affected them. Just didn't understand the need for the doors and plot breakaways.
    13. Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001 (Steve Coll) - 9/10 - This is a badass book and right up my alley. Exhaustively researched and incredibly detailed. I'm guessing a few of you here have read this so I won't get too far into the weeds but I think it speaks volumes that the very large majority of Coll's reporting was confirmed by the 9/11 commission (though Coll didn't go as easy on the Saudis and Pakistan as the commission did).I look forward to reading Coll's Directorate S, which is something of a followup, in the near future.

It's an interesting part of history, with a movie to go with it, but the book felt like cliff notes of the history of the black women calculators for the NACA and NASA. There wasn't much detail to the stories behind it.

One of the bigger take aways I got from Other Suns was how she discussed them as immigrants. And they followed the path that most immigrant populations do. First generation moves w nothing, works their asses off , their children are in much better environments because they're beholden to the work of their parents ect.

Talked about how the children of the southern migrants typically were more successful than their African American peers that grew up in the cities they moved to.

Cari Mora - I had impossibly high expectations for this Thomas Harris' Hanibal Lecter series are some of my favorite books. This wasnt a bad read, but just didnt hit where I was hoping. Still a good fast summer read.

Alphabet Squadron - Good star wars book if youre a SW :comicbookguy:

The River - This book was outstanding. Perfect summer beach read/thriller. Two college kids go on a kayak trip, get caught in a forrest fire, meet a couple camping. A few days later the husband meets up w them and says his wife died in an accident. They think he might of killed her. Now there trying to escape a forrest fire and while playing cat and mouse w a possible killer.

Recursion - Another good one. Love this kind of sci-fi where it ask bigger questions, but still a fast moving plot.

Wasn't the greatest book I've ever read but it did in fact get better from the point I had considered quitting. The big crime in the story doesn't happen til halfway through the book. Up to that point, it felt like the author was just passing along breezy gossip with no connection to anything. In the second half you see what he was setting up. At the risk of *toxic masculinity*, I think this book is more interesting to women and gay men. It was recommended to me by a girl who had it ranked as like an all time fav. A couple hundred pages of stories about drag queens, hot male prostitutes, parties, cotillions, and antique furniture later I was like "I can see why."

    Up next--

Part of the problem with the pacing is that it's non-fiction.

I remember reading this in middle school, and it was neat to find out it was much different than I remember. Before rereading, all I could remember is them hiding upstairs, having to be quiet, and worrying about being caught all of the time. There is much more about her relationships with the others in the house, and a transition through adolescence through her writing.
Going to Amsterdam in a couple of weeks and I regret not buying tickets a while back to the museum. Hoping I can get some on one of the days I'm there.
