Also for shoes, I put them in a shoe bag and hook it on my backpack to save the space inside. My feet are large so taking extra shoes sucks
I somehow convinced my wife to only carry on for 2+ weeks in Australia a few months back. Also spent 2 days in Beijing during their winter. Used the Osprey Farpoint 55 based on recs from this thread and it worked out great. Granted, we did have easy access to do laundry.
I got hated on for the away bag I bought in here but I can fit 2 extra pairs of shoes and 12 days worth of clothes in there no problem and it fits even in those shitty Embrear jet overhead cabinets
Large backpack. I may buy a local shirt and wear that which may cause me to not bring home some clothes I originally brought with me, ie I don't pack my nicest stuff. If traveling with a GF the best bet might be just to share 1 big checked bag, but that spells trouble for many reasons including any weight limits.
Team carry on backpack for the most part. I rarely pack any sort of roller bag, unless I’ll be settled into one hotel for more than like 5 days with easy transport to/from.
Wife can't carry on mainly due to liquids. For beach trips I can usually carry-on pretty easily. If it's a winter trip it sucks b/c clothes get bigger. Also shoes/boots take up space. Usually roller bags. I have zero desire to carry a massive carry on back pack. I also think hostels are stupid and have zero desire for that so I know this goes against most ITT
my wife committed to backpacks a couple of weeks before our trip, then decommitted in favor of checked bag the day before. Honestly it was quite nice and the only time it was an issue was when the porters at our cave exploration base camp were storing the suitcase and complaining to us about the weight, but it was good natured. It was quite nice to walk through airports and board flights with only small day packs
Lots of deals popping off the last couple of days on Secret Flying. Lots of flights to Europe under $300.
this leads me to my other preference, some of the rec'd itineraries people do online are insane where you change cities/hotels every day or every other. I put on my tin foil hat and assume it's the travel boards trying to convince people to spend tons of money moving around. I'd rather have one day too many in an area and relax vs feel like I didn't really get a feel for where I'm at because i'm walking out the door of the hotel 24 hours after getting in
If TSA ever does away with carryon shit or my wife get's organized w/ lotions, shampoo, soap etc into a million carryon sized bottles and it can fit into a bag, she can carry on. She bought a new Away suitcase that she takes on most trips, but just checks it
Agree. 3 nights in a major city feels rushed. That only gives you two full days and partial days traveling on either end.
we did 5 in copenhagen 5 in stockholm and if you tracked what people said online regarding itineraries we were way over staying I think we stayed one too many in Stockholm, but that's from a what we like personally standpoint I could live in Copenhagen and think anything under four there isn't enough.
I'd rather overstay than under. That's just me tho 4 seems to be about the perfect amount in a big city. I'm really struggling w/ an upcoming Bali trip b/c there are 4 places I really want to go and I'm worried about moving around too much
Only trip we've done where we were very mobile was Vietnam and it was the right move. Even then we did 2HCMC, 2 Hue, 3 Hoi An, 2HCMC. It was the right move based on our constraints and how little there really was to do in the middle two cities.
I have the Farpoint 80, but it's really a big 55 bag with a 25 detachable daypack. I generally stuff the 55 full of everything and check it, then also fill the daypack to carry on. Lately I've been doing a lot treks/camping trips/etc. on long vacations, so I've pretty much required a carry on bag. Not much use for a big pair of hiking boots/sleeping bag/etc. when you're in the city.
Completely agree. A+ food, breweries, vibe, weed. Just needs a big mountain range, but you can hop over to Norway for that. Wouldn't even need a car, just get a good bike.
I would assume as a country, Norway is more expensive than Denmark, but Copenhagen is also one of the most expensive cities in the world. But worth it. Just gotta move there so they pay you a wage relative to their crazy cost of living.
The only knock I had for Copenhagen was their transit wasn't quite up to par, Stockholms was better. On the upside they're adding two metro lines currently so it'll get better. Their bike set up is nice though with dedicated lanes and stop lights, wish we'd had more of a chance to try it out.
Yeah was up there in the NYC/SF tier of cost. Had to train myself to remember tax/tip are all included in stated prices or I'd have died a little buying $10 draft beers.
We did Bergen and fjords last fall. Saw Oslo by train from the central station to the airport to fly out. 90% of the pics/videos from that trip are on an sd card for the GoPro that I have yet to unload.
i had ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo, then train to Bergen with some stop offs on our itinerary at one point think that'll be next trip as Korea and Copenhagen are probably our top 2 international want to go back places so far
I like to rock a small backpack for warm trips, cold or dress-up get my weekender duffle that converts into a garment bag for suits/jackets. I can’t stand large luggage. The last thing I want to think about on vacation is keeping track of a bunch of useless stuff that should have been left at home. I’ve probably gone a little overboard with it—if we’re headed someplace warm and I don’t need nice clothes, I’ll throw a couple pairs of dryfit running shorts and shirts in a half-pack with my contact solution, toothbrush, and phone charger and call it good.
I need to find a pair of shoes that can work as somewhat nice if you need to dress up but also workout in while being comfortable traveling.
this could spawn a 10 page argument but I tend to always have a pair of 'nicer' vans around. They work in day time and can also transition to night, as long as it isn't too fancy of a spot.
For shoes I don’t try push it if I need both kinds, so I do what Arkadin does and clip a track-sack to the pack. Though if you like minimalist footwear, you could get a barefoot runner in a non-crazy colorway and that would probably do the trick.
Was in Bergen the last week of April and got insane luck where the first two days were 25 degrees celsius and sunny. Was able to hike one of the 7 mountains and see the entire city wearing a tshirt. Two days later when we left it was back to normal weather (8 degrees and cold, windy, rain).
The way I usually do it is wear the nice loafers or heavier workout shoes on the plane, and clip some sandals directly to the pack, but I’ve used a second bag too. Something like this, that is light but has enough room to cram in a pair of shoes and some knick-knacks (red bag on the right): It usually isn’t uncomfortable, but if it annoys me everything is small enough to sling over a shoulder or carry by hand with no issues. For comparison, that blue bag is what I like to take on short or warm trips and I always have a couple of those nylon dry bags on the left that can double for dirty laundry and/or extra storage.
Definitely need this as well. Packing shoes takes up so much damn space with size 13 feet. I’m thinking, depending on trip dates, locations, etc., go with play around shoes and maybe sandals. Just need the decently nice pair of shoes for any date night type nights out.
I have the same issue w/ big shoes (also a 13). For dress shoes that must go in your bag, you can stuff your socks and undies into them instead of using shoe-trees. Saves on space and keeps the shoe from being dented.
Flying EasyJet in a couple of weeks and you don't get a free handbag underneath the seat in front of you. That's usually my spillover bag for a pair of shoes if I travel without checking a bag so it will be quite annoying stuffing everything in the carry-on bag.
Shoes are def the worst thing that takes up the most space. Went out of town last week and took 4 pair of shoes for various activities. 3 took up half my carryon back and barely got my suit/dress clothes/casual shit in the other side
Will usually pack 2 boardshorts, 1 hybrid shorts, 2 tees, one pair flip flops, toiletries. Then I’ll wear olukais, hybrid shorts and a hoodie on the plane / car ride. All can fit in a back pack. Will almost always buy a couple pairs of the same types of clothes at destination.
Last night and the highlights again this morning Thought John John coasted, which didn’t make me the happiest, loved seeing Medina eliminated after a weak claim, Kolohe telling the world to fuck off, griffin almost dying. Robinson the goat. Awesome round. Tour has been half spectacular half lame so far imo. Dbah and Keramas sucked.
Freestone is on a different level out there. I was surprised Gabby went out early considering how well he can surf back door. Was happy to see tho. Griffin might not requalify unless he starts hitting some QS events. The top half of the bracket is stacked. The quarters/R8/Semis are set up to all be great, especially the latter two.
If they run at the box, Robinson is winning the event, if they run at main break I’ve got the winner of Italo and JJ. I love watching griffin and really hope he can pull it together. Tour is in danger of losing 2 Hawaiians and 1 American early :(
