people forget how big the Oden hype was because centers aren't as important in today's game (and obviously he's seen as more of a punchline than anything now)
I agree I'm not entirely sure that even Zion is more hyped than Oden was. People are just affected by recency bias. I mean read this article from lebron's junior year. It isn't even close https://www.si.com/vault/2002/02/18...ady-being-mentioned-as-the-heir-to-air-jordan
Bill: "I am going to have to bring my son in to do his Seth Rollins impersonation." Bill, please, don't.
Bill: "The one thing I would say about Dolan is that he isn't a meddler and the Knicks front office seems to be at least average now Sal: "Well what about the porzingis trade?" Bill: " I feel like they did about as well as they could have with Dolan forcing them to trade Porzingis"
how convenient for Bill to decide he isn't voting for players from losing teams for All NBA when he's done it in the past multiple times. It's almost as though he has ulterior motives and doesn't deserve to have an actual vote for these things.
Bill learning that Brits worship Definitely Maybe more than What’s the Story? (Morning Glory) was fun as it happened.
I skipped a lot of the most recent BS pod with Russillo, but them talking about Kobe stans in the Lakers/Magic section of the pod amused me very much.
Just listened to The Hangover episode of the Rewatchables, which I think is the peak of my love/hate relationship with this show. It seems every episode (that I listen to, at least) is Bill, Chris and Sean spending 30 minutes bullshitting about weddings, bachelor parties, college or stereotypical bro-ish things. As much as we love to mock Bill here, I can see why Bill has friends. I have no idea what type of person says, "Let's call Chris Ryan and make sure he parties with us." I have no idea how he or Sean have friends. I love that Sean overuses the F-word and lists playing poker as one of his favorite things to do. Both of those are absolute caricatures of try-hard, over-compensating versions of masculinity, which perfectly encapsulates everything about him.
sean has good takes but definitely is a specific type of person I grew up with in the Northeast that is grating chris ryan is a gem i'll fight you
If I went to Ringer High School: Bill would be someone that was one of my 2-3 best friends in middle school, but by the time junior/senior year rolls around we've drifted apart a little bit. We're still friends and he's never done anything to me, but when people mock him behind his back I don't tell them to stop and instead laugh a little too hard at the jokes about him, then feel bad aftewards. Sean and Chris: We operate on separate ends of the clique and I actively avoid their company whenever possible. Jason: That friend that runs in different circles than you but you enjoy hanging with them whenever it happens. You leave wondering why you don't hang out with them more often, but make no effort to change it. Mallory: Fun to nerd out with from time to time, but you make an effort to make sure no one knows about it.
Hot take: I love Shea but he’s a terrible pod host. Great guest, but hosting takes away his fast ball
Bill and I would be like what him and JackO are. I had friends like Chris and Sean in HS but it would have been a separate group from Bill.
He was so annoying in that pod. Every point KOC or Tjarks would make about a player on a losing team Bills response was “Sorry, but i care about winning”. He had to do it about 10 times at least. And yeah i am pretty sure that has not always been his stance.
it was as old and out of touch as he's sounded in a while. He voted Anthony Davis and KAT to All NBA teams in the past when they were on losing teams. He had a hard-on for keeping LeBron off his All NBA team and would've come up with any reason to justify it.
What if he keeps doing that for as long as he has a vote? These votes are more complicated than ever because the league is absurdly deep right now. If he keeps the same moving forward, I think people are allowed to change opinions on what they value over time.
the only change that occurred was his least favorite player joining his least favorite franchise, simple as that. He already admitted at the end of their discussion that he should've voted for Beal so I doubt this is something he'll stick to long-term.
i didn't listen to the podcast and don't really think i need to. by the time the conference finals are happening, i'm bored of the all-nba talk. but i don't think it's outrageous if you were to leave lebron off the ballot this year. jackie macmullan's answer in her new yorker profile was really good imo; he was good on the court but abhorrent off of it. sounds like simmons was pretty dumb in his reasoning, though.
Just started the hangover pod tonight and then looked up bills previous Vegas trip pieces. Feel kinda silly acknowledging this, but I don’t really care for bills writing style. He’s very well known for his style and voice, but it does nothing for me. I like his spoken word much more.
He's gotten a couple decades worth of mileage out of Boogie Nights references and homerism. No shame in not liking it
Really surprised it was ESPN and not the ringer that had that lakers article today. It feels like they’ve been alluding to or at least hoping that story was written all year.
Also, Concepcion had a head fake with the annoying laugh on the draft lotto pod, but let me reiterate, Chris Ryan has a terribly annoying laugh.
especially when it's done to brown-nose Simmons, those poor Ringer employees are forced to act like Bill is Delirious era Eddie Murphy
I have a dissonance with bill because I suspect I’d get along well with him sitting at a bar, but my head tells me he must have a giant complex and hires these fart sniffers on purpose.
Pretty sure Boston is making a play on Durant with all of the gratuitous praise he lauds. Never fails to go super out of his way to bring up durant. It’s borderline weird, but wait, Bill is a homer. Something is cooking. Also, Philly simultaneously has the worst coach in the East, Simmons is a wreck, and they have no bench, but they’re also in the driver seat for the East next year. Bill’s opinions are becoming farcical. We’re gonna get to a point where I only listen to the Rewatchables
I don't listen to nearly as many pods as you guys seem to, but Simmons and Russillo have talked a lot of shit about Durant in terms of the court stuff in the ones I've heard. Simmons is weird and the bad stuff about him is getting worse as he gets older and his ego gets bigger, but some of you guys are hearing stuff I just don't hear in these pods.
How has Simmons talked shit about Durant off the court? I can’t recall a single truly negative thing he’s said about him. Even on some of the most indefensible stuff (the alt accounts on social media, signing with GS, etc) he’s never really made fun of him or gone in.
Kinda torn about this episode...on one hand I appreciate the fact they didn't spend 30 minutes talking about the shit in that movie that wouldn't be acceptable today. On the other, they pretty much glossed over Ken Jeong which kinda sucked
At a minimum I think they’ve alluded to his behavior with reporters, but suffice to say if he played for Philly or the lakers they’d still be talking about his alt twitter accounts.
He and Russillo have been talking about how "none of these players are happy" every podcast I've listened to, and if I'm not mistaken that started with Durant and Kyrie. I've heard them talk a lot about Durant off the court and leaving and whatnot. I don't remember a ton of specific things, but I remember at least a couple times them having a conversation where I thought to myself "I guess Durant's not doing any more pods."
he admits on the pod today he did it explicitly to justify keeping Lebron off and it made him leave Beal off as well which was a mistake
I mean, I dont think Lebron deserved to make an All NBA Team playing in only 55 games but at least he made 3rd team. It would have been pretty shitty had he made even the 2nd team.
Tjarks having a 6'8 small ball center with a negative wingspan as his #2 draft prospect over Ja Morant is high comedy. There's a 100% chance one of these guys would've had Darko over Lebron.
There’s no precedent for a guy with Brandon Clarke’s measurables being that good and definitely not a top 5 or top 2 pick. He had like the 3rd worst wingspan at the combine after Tyler Herro and Kyle Guy, two shooters. All of the guys they compare him to Shawn Marion, Draymond, PJ Tucker etc have like 7-foot wingspans. Then they’ll go and reference wingspan with someone else, the dissonance was quite funny.
They also think Doncic was a better prospect at the same stage as Zion, which is A. very on brand and B. Kneejerk/revisionist
Haven’t heard or read that yet, but wouldn’t it be more kneejerk/revisionist if they said Zion was better due to recency bias?
