    recruiting rundown

With May coming to a close, let’s discuss the most consequential developments of June for Notre Dame.

On one hand, it all feels simple in that the Irish need to add a few more pieces at wide receiver and offensive line while on defense, both cornerback and safety appear to be on a route that will travel through the fall while adding an additional edge rusher is an interesting topic.

Of course, it’s not as simple as that. Looking at the long list of defensive back recruits, a two-way prospect out of New York, and multiple wide receiver recruitments developing recently, there is no shortage of questions heading into June.

Here are five of those questions on my mind most as we wrap up May coverage.

    1. Could Notre Dame close its offensive line class in June?

An athlete who was boosted into the 247Sports Top 100 recently, Michael Carmody represents one of the top-rated prospects within Notre Dame’s grasp. Whether you think he’s a guard long-term or a right tackle with multi-year-starter potential, the Irish are set on retrieving his pledge.

Recently reported by Brian Dohn, Carmody will take an official visit to Texas A&M this weekend before hitting South Bend with his brother – a basketball player at Notre Dame – on the weekend of June 6-7.

According to Dohn, a late-June trip to Michigan is also in the works.

If you’ve been following his recruitment, you know that both myself and Tom Loy have predicted this 6-foot-6 mauler to the Irish. It isn’t without reason to have concerns about his additional visits, but it also makes sense to maintain confidence in the Irish.

Aside from Carmody, although there are some who suggest Notre Dame could finish with just two tackles in its O-line class, Reece Atteberry stands tall as the top interior lineman on the board.

Could the Irish close on Carmody next month before (or after) sealing the deal with Atteberry during or near his June 21 – 23 official visit?

    It certainly feels possible.

    2. What should we expect of the Cullen Coleman recruitment?

We know that Notre Dame will get Coleman on campus for the official visit weekend of June 21 – 23, a trip that will follow official visits to Cal (June 1) and Purdue (June 14). Essentially, it’s easy to envision Notre Dame beating out those two programs.

However, Coleman added an offer from Stanford on Monday shortly after breaking down his top schools with Irish Illustrated. I reached out to Coleman for comment on that offer.

“I think they can get in the race and have a chance at getting me to commit to their school,” Coleman said. “It’s a great program so I’m definitely going to look into it.”

With that said, will Stanford put pressure on the Irish?

It’s important to note that Coleman’s three official visits are very likely the only three he’ll take before the fall. He stated that he’ll take additional visits in the fall only if he hasn’t already committed by then.

With Stanford, they aren’t booking official visits before the fall and in fact, they hope to hold all official visits after the football season. In that, could Coleman take a trip to Stanford on his own dime prior to making a decision? It doesn’t feel likely that he’ll take his decision to the late-fall or early-winter.

It’s going to be very interesting to see what Coleman decides to do around the end of June. Can Notre Dame close with a successful official visit or will Stanford or other opportunities make for a longer time frame?

Keep your eye on Coleman in June.

    3. Will Notre Dame stay alive with Clark Phillips III?

The highest-ranked and most important prospect moving forward for Notre Dame, Clark Phillips IIItells Irish Illustrated that it looks like his official visit with the Irish will come during an early season home game.

The Irish clearly hope to wow the five-star cornerback with the thrill ride of a Saturday night home win.

In the meantime, Ohio State is pushing for his pledge while UCLA and others recruit Phillips III like the dynamic five-star talent he is. The month of June could bring important developments as the pressure ramps up.

Until Phillips III returns to Notre Dame, it’ll be a nerve-wracking situation for some as it relates to Phillips III potentially making a decision before the fall. For now, Notre Dame hopes he’ll stick to his guns with a fall pledge time frame after an impactful fall official visit.

Expect to see loads of speculation on this recruitment through June.

    4. Will clarity surface in defensive back recruiting?

The list of offered prospects on the Notre Dame defensive back board I’m tracking personally has exceeded 20.

Especially at cornerback, a wide variety of prospects exist. We’ve seen two-way talent, athletes known best at wide receiver, running back, or dual-threat quarterback, and others announce scholarship offers in recent weeks.

A few in that category I like a great deal in terms of having the tools to develop into something impactful are Jordan Addison (cornerback) and R.J. Moten (safety). Both show fast-twitch athleticism, quick feet, and the overall speed and mobility to blend in nicely at corner and safety.

But those are just two recently offered prospects to consider. And on the June 21 – 23 weekend, we’ll see a handful of defensive backs on campus.

In June, we’ll likely see important developments within that robust group including visit bookings and lack of interest narrowing the board.

While we know who the key targets are, it’s going to be interesting to see which prospects below that top-of-the-board range will emerge as legitimate options.

    5. Could the defensive line class come to a close?

We know that Cullen Coleman could potentially develop at defensive end if he chooses the Irish (the Crystal Ball Forecast at 100% in favor of Notre Dame). And we know the coaching staff is very high on Mitchell Melton, an athlete from a familiar program who plays with quality range and a variety of tools.

While Notre Dame holds two defensive end commitments after signing four more edge rushers over the last two classes and two defensive tackle pledges after adding five in total over the 2018 and 2019 classes, there are some who argue the Irish could stay put with what they have.

At the same time, Melton will take an official visit on the weekend of June 6 – 7, Coleman takes his on June 21 – 23 along with Ben Yurosek, another appealing defensive end prospect.

    2COMMENTS
In that Coleman is eyeing other options like Cal, Purdue, and Stanford, Melton is being recruited consistently by Michigan, Ohio State, and others. Can Notre Dame rise above those programs with these two in June?

Just like Carmody, Atteberry, Phillips III, and others, Irish Illustrated will be keeping close tabs on these two in June.

    midweek musings

Midweek thoughts about the Notre Dame football program, its recruiting efforts and college football:

HOW GOOD CAN CHASE CLAYPOOL REALLY BE?
We have seen breakout wide receivers come out of nowhere at Notre Dame in the last decade plus. Former Irish great Golden Tate caught six balls as a freshman in 2007 before busting out with 58 catches for 1,080 yards and 10 scores as a sophomore in 2008.

Likewise, Will Fuller caught just six passes as a freshman and then dominated as a sophomore, hauling in 76 passes for 1,094 yards and 15 scores as a sophomore.

Equanimeous St. Brown caught just one pass as a freshman in 2015 before emerging as the team’s go-to receiver as a sophomore, when he caught 58 passes for 961 yards and nine touchdowns.

Miles Boykin caught just 18 passes during the first three seasons at Notre Dame before breaking out this past season, leading the team with 59 catches for 872 yards and eight scores.

The hope is that Chase Claypool can be the next breakout receiver for Notre Dame in 2019, but Claypool’s story is quite different. Claypool emerging won’t come out of nowhere; in fact, it’s something Notre Dame’s coaches and fans have been waiting on for years.

Claypool has tantalized spectators for three years, showing a unique blend of size, strength and athleticism. He heads into his senior season with 84 career receptions for 1,122 yards and six touchdowns.

We saw flashes last season of what Claypool can do when he is focused. From the Pittsburgh win to the USC victory – a span of six games – Claypool caught 30 passes for 431 yards. Expand that out over an entire season and it would have been good for 65 catches and 933 yards.

That’s pretty good, but Claypool can be even better, and he need to be even better. We saw that this spring, when the talented Canadian gave Notre Dame’s cornerbacks fits, showing a strong rapport with quarterback Ian Bookand the ability to stretch the field as well as he can make tough catches.

For Claypool it has never been about talent. What has held him back is a lack of focus, an overall lack of maturity with his game that came from inexperience, and a lack of consistency. In 2018 we saw him struggle early but become a far more consistent player in the second half of the season, only to take a step back in the Cotton Bowl.

If Claypool can use that late season surge and his struggles against Clemson as motivation, which he seems to have done during the spring, he could emerge as the best Irish receiver since Fuller.

Nationally it is a loaded year at wide receiver, so Claypool will need to explode in order to get noticed and vault his way up NFL Draft boards. But there is no doubt in my mind that the combination of his talent, Chip Long’s offense, DelVaughn Alexander's coaching and Book’s accuracy can get him to that level.

If he does that, the Irish offense will have the kind of impact weapon in the boundary that lifts up the level of play of everyone around him, which then gives the offense a chance to be as good as it needs to be for the Irish to make another trip to the playoffs.

RECRUITING KENTUCKY BECOMING KEY FOR NOTRE DAME
The state of Kentucky is certainly not known for producing mass quantities of NFL players. In fact, the most recent analysis I saw showed that in 2018 only nine NFL players hailed from the Bluegrass State.

But that doesn't mean the state can't be important for Notre Dame, and we are seeing that in recent classes especially. In 2019, Notre Dame signed Bowling Green (Ky.) South Warren four-star defensive tackle

    Jacob Lacey
, who I graded out as a Top 100 caliber recruit and ESPN ranked as the No. 115 player in the country. He was a standout in the spring as an early enrollee and will play in 2019 as a true freshman.

One of Notre Dame's top commits in the 2020 class is Alexandria (Ky.) Covington Catholic four-star tight end

    Michael Mayer
, another player I grade out as a Top 100 caliber recruit. Mayer is ranked No. 126 nationally by Rivals and is a Top 100 recruit according to a different recruiting service.

Notre Dame wants to add more speed to its secondary roster, and one of the fastest players on the board for 2020 is Danville (Ky.) Boyle County athlete

    Landen Bartleson
, a player the Irish are in strong position with.

KentuckyPreps.com analyst Dave Lackford pointed out in a recent articlethere is a surge happening in Kentucky football recruiting. From 2009 to 2014 the state produced just seven total four-star recruits. There were eight four-star recruits in the 2019 class alone, there are five four-stars in the 2020 class (a number that is likely to grow according to Lackford). From 2015 to 2017 the state produced a five-star recruit each year, two of which signed with and started for Alabama in 2018.

The nation's best freshman in 2018 was Purdue's

    Rondale Moore
, a brilliant athlete and a native of Louisville.

From 2009 to 2017 the Fighting Irish signed three players from the state. If it lands Bartleson it will have three in the last two classes. It seems that Notre Dame's coaching staff has wisely picked up on the trend in the state and is taking advantage. The prime talent areas in Kentucky are all within 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 hour drives away from South Bend, which is about two to three hours closer than Tuscaloosa, Ala. or Athens, Ga. or Clemson, S.C.

Kentucky isn't a state that can produce quantity for Notre Dame, but if the staff is smart - and I think they are - it is a state that can start producing top-level quality.

A LOOK AT THE PRESEASON MAGAZINES
Three of the major preseason magazines have come out over the last week. Anyone that knows me knows that this is a mini-Christmas time for me. But that's not the point of this note. The point here is to recap briefly how Notre Dame and its players are viewed in the magazines.

All three (Lindy's, Street & Smith's, Athlon) rank Notre Dame as a preseason Top 10 team. Street & Smith's ranks Notre Dame No. 7 and the other two magazines have the Irish ranked No. 9. Athlon is the only publication that gave a specific record prediction, and they have the Irish going 10-2 with losses to Georgia and Michigan.

Notre Dame is slated to play in Orange Bowl against Florida (Street & Smith's) or the Cotton Bowl against UCF (Athlon).

Offensive lineman Tommy Kraemer (Street & Smith's), defensive lineman Julian Okwara (Athlon, Lindy's) and safety Alohi Gilman (Athlon) all earned preseason All-American honors. Lindy's named quarterback Ian Book one of the ten top Heisman Trophy candidates.

    STAT OF THE WEEK
I've written often this summer about Notre Dame's need to improve its rush defense. This week I wrote about the importance of the defensive tackles against the run. Notre Dame has certainly made huge leaps in the two years since Clark Lea arrived, first as the linebackers coach with Mike Elko and then as the defensive coordinator.

Notre Dame went through its worst three-year stretch of run defense in school history from 2014-16, so improving to giving up 139.5 rushing yards and 3.8 yards per rush last season were significant strides forward.

But there is still another big leap needed.

Here are the rushing defense numbers from the last 10 national champions.

    2018 - Clemson - 96.3 YPG - 2.5 YPC
    2017 - Alabama - 94.7 YPG - 2.7 YPC
    2016 - Clemson - 129.6 YPG - 3.7 YPC
    2015 - Alabama - 75.7 YPG - 2.4 YPC
    2014 - Ohio State - 141.3 YPG - 3.95 YPC
    2013 - Florida State - 124.8 YPG - 3.3 YPC
    2012 - Alabama - 76.4 YPG - 2.4 YPC
    2011 - Alabama - 72.2 YPG - 2.4 YPC
    2010 - Auburn - 109.1 YPG - 3.4 YPC
    2009 - Alabama - 72.4 YPG - 2.2 YPC

The yards per game numbers are interesting to look at, but the number I think is more important is the yards per attempt. Only twice in the last decade has a defense given up more than 3.4 yards per attempt and still won a national championship. Those two teams averaged 44.8 (Ohio State) and 39.2 (Clemson) points per game on offense.

A championship can still be won without an elite run defense, but as the last decade has shown, having one certainly makes it easier.

    TWEET OF THE WEEK
Some Notre Dame players paid tribute to our fallen heroes on Memorial Day. I think this tweet from quarterback Nolan Henry was just right. We salute those who gave the ultimate sacrifice defending our freedom and the families that loved and supported them.

Definitely some hazy parts lol. But I vividly remember watching the live stream of my sister’s elopement while in the stadium. I saw the dome, the library, the Irish running roughshod over the Trojans, and my little sister getting married on a beach in Hawaii all at the same time. Beautiful weather and a memory that will last a lifetime. It was a very special night.

There is a lot of :ohshit::ohshit::ohshit::ohshit::ohnoes::ohnoes::ohnoes::ohnoes::ohnoes: going on all the board rights now with DB recruiting and AJ Henning. CP3 is basically done to OSU (as of now), Jerrin Thompson is moving his OV and his decision till later in the season, sounds like the staff canceled Kristian Story and Chris Thompson's OVs since they don't seem all that serious about ND. Henning is OV next weekend to ND but then going to OV Mich on 6/21.

My thoughts - it sounds like the staff struck out on all their initial top prospects for CB (CP3, Kimber, Ryan Watts, Donte Manning) and decided to go with the high 3*/low 4* approach with guys they think they can mold to be like Julian Love (tenacious/high instincts guy) and Troy Pride (elite track athlete). I think we'd all love a top 100 level CB but Lea/Lyght/Joseph have literally been coast to coast looking for DB prospects and the guys they've offered look pretty darn good themselves and definitely have some upside, they just aren't there yet like the initial prospects. We will see what happens in the end, but guys like RJ Moten, Lovie Jenkins, Clarence Lewis all look pretty good and I think KJ Wallace and Rutherford have the chance to be very good too.

    Friday recruiting notebook

The Friday Recruiting Notebook at Blue & Gold Illustrated details some of the latest news and notes on the recruiting trail for the Fighting Irish.

ELITE 2021 OL BLAKE FISHER RETURNING TO NOTRE DAME
Finishing up the 2020 offensive line class strong is obviously very important for Notre Dame, but so is getting itself in good position for the class of 2021.

The Irish have already secured its center of the future in Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy interior lineman

    Greg Crippen
, and the Irish sit in solid, early position for Olney (Md.) Good Counsel offensive tackle
    Landon Tengwall
    and Avon (Ind.) offensive tackle
    Blake Fisher
    .

For Fisher, he has a busy summer ahead of him. The athletic 6-foot-6, 325-pounder plans to visit Alabama and Penn State, while also seeing closer schools, such as Indiana, Notre Dame, Purdue, Ohio State, and Michigan.

Fisher has visited Notre Dame several times already, and the elite prospect is staying in consistent communication with the Irish staff. Notre Dame is one of a few schools that Fisher communicates the most with, as he talks with the coaches and players at least once a week.

"It's definitely a family based culture over there at Notre Dame," Fisher said. "It's great."

Fisher plans to make a commitment to a school before his senior season; don't expect him to rush a decision. He will start to narrow things down sooner than later.

"I'll probably decrease my list sometime before or during my junior season -- just to focus my mind on my top schools," he noted.

2021 ATLANTA WR CAMPING AT NOTRE DAME ON SUNDAY
The two top prospects, to our knowledge, visiting Notre Dame for its prospect camp on June 2 are Atlanta (Ga.) Hapeville Charter wide receiver

    Jaquez Smith
and Athens Academy (Ga.) wide receiver
    Deion Colzie
. Both of the top 2021 Georgia recruits visited Notre Dame in the spring and hope to impress the coaching staff in person.

"I want to compete against other guys," Smith told Blue & Gold Illustrated. "They're going to teach me through the drills and everything. I want to work through my different releases."

Notre Dame offered Smith in January and are one of his top two schools along with the Georgia Bulldogs. Safeties coach Terry Joseph stopped by Smith's school this spring.

"The thing about Notre Dame is they want a complete receiver and a complete athlete -- and same as Georgia," said Smith.

Smith added offers from Arizona, North Carolina, and West Virginia this spring.

He plans to announce a commitment to a school next spring.

    QUICK HITTERS
*** Bryan Driskell, EJ Holland, and I still have our FutureCast predictions in for Notre Dame to land Mars (Penn.) offensive tackle

    Michael Carmody
. The four-star 2020 prospect will officially visit Texas A&M this weekend -- his second time seeing the Aggies. Carmody is set to unofficially visit Notre Dame June 5-6.

*** New Monmouth (N.J.) Mater Dei cornerback

    Clarence Lewis
picked up a handful of new offers this spring, including Notre Dame. It doesn't seem that Lewis will be making a commitment any time soon, which allows the Irish more time to evaluate and sort through its defensive back board and where Lewis stands on it. He hopes to visit Duke, Nebraska, and Notre Dame in the coming months.

*** Notre Dame sent out a new receiver offer to Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman wide receiver

    Rome Odunze
on May 16. After the Irish offered the talented 6-foot-3, 183-pound prospect, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Alabama, Texas, and Ohio State also extended offers.

    *** Five-star running back

    Marshawn Lloyd
discussed Notre Dame as a school he was considering during interviews about his recruitment but recently committed to South Carolina. It was an interesting but impressive get for the Gamecocks to land the dominant running back from Maryland. After adding
    Chris Tyree
, the Irish cooled off on recruiting other running backs.

*** Notre Dame offered a couple of new 2021 defensive line targets this past Sunday. St. Louis (Mo.) Lutheran of St. Charles defensive tackle

    Gabriel Rubio
announced an offer from the Irish, and our own EJ Holland already put in a FutureCast pick for the Irish. Notre Dame also offered Corona (Calif.) Centennial defensive end
    Korey Foreman
    , a 6-foot-5, 255-pound recruit.

*** I reported on Monday in the Gold Standard that Notre Dame was still communicating with near five-star outside linebacker

    Phillip Webb
, who I believe would be a drop end for the Irish. Rivals.com analyst Chad Simmonscaught up with Webb this week and confirmed my story. Webb noted that he's considering taking a visit to Notre Dame, but even if he does visit South Bend, it would be a long shot that the Irish land him.

*** We learned that three prospects cancelled their Notre Dame official visits this week in safety

    Kristian Story
    , defensive end
    Ben Yurosek
    , and safety
    Jerrin Thompson
. All were slated to officially visit on June 21.

    Shamrock secrets - defensive line

There is a lot happening along the defensive line, so we decided to check in with our sources and here is the latest on where things stand.

*** Four was the ideal number for the defensive line class, and Notre Dame has gotten to that number. With that being true, sources indicated that the staff will only take another DE if they view him as an impact player, and the drop position is where they want that play to be. With three of the four players in the current class projected as strongside ends or interior players, adding another drop to go with Jordan Bolelho is the goal, but if they don't get an impact player at the position they are just fine with where they are right now. Right now there is really only one pure defensive end recruit currently on the board.

*** The reason Bakersfield (Calif.) Christian three-star Benjamin Yurosek isn't visiting Notre Dame on the 21st of June is because that visit weekend was no longer an option for him. Notre Dame has moved on from Yurosek, and the reasons above explain why. He is not a pure drop candidate is is viewed more as a strongside player. Stanford has been in a very good position with him for awhile, and with Notre Dame no longer on him it makes the odds of him landing at Stanford even greater, which is why I put my FutureCast pick in for Stanford yesterday.

*** The same is true for Dedham (Mass.) Noble & Greenough School three-star athlete Cam Large. Most schools are recruiting Large as a tight end, but Notre Dame was looking at him to play defense. Large projects as a strongside player, and that is why Notre Dame backed off of him and why he never set up a visit to South Bend for June.

*** Buford (Ga.) Lanier four-star end Phillip Webb recently noted that he was considering a Notre Dame visit, but that visit won't be happening because he is another player that the Irish staff has recently stopped recruiting. Webb was always a long shot, but with the staff comfortable with its current numbers and liking another player more, our sources informed us that Webb was not going to be in the mix moving forward.

*** So where does that leave the board now? At this point, after talking to sources, it seems there is one player on the board, and that is Olney (Md.) Good Counsel three-star Mitchell Melton. It would seem Notre Dame is much higher on Melton than the services, who all rank him as a three-star recruit, but the staff views him as an impact athlete with a lot of upside. Talking to BGI football analyst Bryan Driskell, the reason for Melton being a top target, beside just the fact Notre Dame thinks he's really talented, is that he is the ideal complement to Botelho. Melton comes off the edge in high school but also spends a lot of time as an off-ball linebacker that shows prowess in coverage. That gives him good all-around drop traits, which would complement Botelho quite nicely. Botelho is more of an impact edge rusher, but Melton brings the all-around game, which makes that duo similar to the current duo of Julian Okwara (Botelho) and Daeiln Hayes(Melton).

*** Talking to different sources, there are two reasons Notre Dame has narrowed things down when it comes to defensive line recruiting. One, they are comfortable with the current roster and two, as we have discussed in other updates, the numbers for this class are going to be smaller, so the only way the staff was going to get to 5-6 defensive linemen was if they were able to land extra impact players. So going through spring practice and then the May evaluation period, it would seem decisions were made to focus on numbers at other positions, which is why Notre Dame originally went after some linemen but then backed off.

Mike Singer saw Melton workout in person recently and could not stop raving about how athletic the kid was...said he was the best ND prospect he saw live in person. Sounds like ND will make him a priority going forward and focus just on him.

Also, ND offered Gabriel Rubio from Mizzu. Kid is over 6'5 (this is confirmed) and 280 lbs right now with offers from most of the power SEC schools and Ohio State. ND is the clear favorite and he's coming back to workout at camp on 6/15 because he wants to be coached by Elston. The camp will be his 3rd visit to campus already. I don't think he's quite as athletic as Tillery was at the same stage, but he's a lot more powerful and nasty and I think he's going to be a legit top 100 guy when it's all said and done. Elston has dline recruiting humming right now.

One last opinion on recruiting right now - it seems like ND has backed off a ton of guys after spring ball and it's clear some recruits are not choosing ND as well. I think it's clear that the staff got a much better assessment of their roster after spring ball and re-prioritized certain positions (RB and LB). I also think they KNOW they are going to be very good this upcoming season on the field and they want the ability to go big game fishing as the season progresses. I don't think they could do that last year because most of the class was already full. I think they are only going to take guys they really want whether they are 3* (like Xavier Watts) or 4* and 5* guys they are going to come back to and wait for.
