So... the movie. Wasnt great, but wasn’t 19% bad either. Probably either a 5 or 6 out of 10. No spoiler review in spoiler Spoiler Had some decent parts in the movie. Storyline wasn’t awful but there was about a full hour where it was boring as fuck. That is my biggest gripe. For an X-men movie, I want action at least every 15-20 mins, not this one. Ending wasn’t the greatest but I wasn’t the worst either. I also went in thinking it wasn’t going to be great so I didn’t have any expectations for this movie. Don’t go in expecting a world beater. Just a mediocre X-men film. But they really should give Fassbender his own rated R Magneto movie in the same style as Logan. It would be insane.
Saw Dark Phoenix. Thoughts: Spoiler I liked it. I did. It was substantially better than Apocalypse. Way better than The Last Stand. Some really cool moments too. The train sequence was fucking awesome. So was the sequence at Central Park. The film did justice to those characters. Cyclops actually was a badass in some scenes and used his powers, and wasn’t wasted like the original trilogy. Storm had very cool parts as well. Same for Nightcrawler, who actually kills people in this movie. He loses his shit and uses his tail to roll down some folks. Quicksilver is barely used in the film, which was perplexing. But his moment is in the first act. Magneto is just fucking awesome. In all the films that character has appeared in, I’ve never seen him use his abilities like that. It was so cool the way he took shards of a train and have the antagonists grab it and stab themselves through the neck. That’s just one thing that happened out of several. Oh yeah, he lifts a subway out of the ground. What didn’t work: - The film isn’t constructed like your typical “superhero” movie. A kid would fall asleep. The first act of the film is pretty cool, but the second act is so slow and near monotonous. But as mentioned above, the third act kicks ass. So the pacing of the film needed work. - The villain of the film, Jessica Chastain kinda sucks. She is a D’Bari. Creatures appear on Earth (they resemble the aliens from that Signs movie with Mel Gibson), take over human bodies, pretty powerful, but no backstory really. I was hoping they would be part of the Shi’ar, but nope. Truth be told, I grew up reading X-Men, collecting the comics, watching the animated series — so I’m a little bias. But I enjoyed it.
I think I liked it more than you, but your thoughts are pretty spot on. And yes, 100 percent agree with you on Magneto.
My exact feelings are Pelican Grove ’s Also: Spoiler So angry at Chastain’s villain. You just wasted a phenomenal actor! Introduce the fucking Shi’ar a couple movies ago and just the universe possibilities. The villain here is basically fodder like the Justice League villains... Yes the final act and battle was awesome, but give me the movie until the post death drinks scene between Charles and Hank the cut to the cheap version of Genosha and then cut to Central Park and final battle. That would be a fantastic film! Anyways, whatever. Marvel will do it right in 10 years.
Just got out of Dark Phoenix, don't think it was as bad as the critics make it out to be. Spoiler - Wish they would have shown Jean giving into her darkside more. They came close when they confronted her in New York - Thought the fight scene on the train was cool - Fassbender steals the show, but c'mon now, it's been almost 30 years since the events for First Class, at least dye his hair gray so that it looks like he ages. His character has to be at least 60 by now. - Really, it probably needed to be a 2 part movie to really flesh out the storyline. (The D'bari empire) Which could've have led to this iconic image from the comics Spoiler: Dark Phoenix true power - She literally destroyed the star of an entire solar system, killing trillions - Alast, Logan, Days of Future Past, DP 1&2 and 1st Class are still the heights of the franchise
I do find it funny that they set that film in 1992 considering that we have Patrick Stewart, Famke Janssen, and Ian McKellen playing those roles 8 years later in the continuity
Twas really very mediocre Better than Apocalypse but only by a nose Waste of cast, weird story decisions, felt both rushed and uneventful. Like it moved from beat to beat really snappily but at the same time nothing happened for long stretches. Also it got really hokey. Theres a thin line between drama and unintentional comedy and it crossed the line more than once
Dark Phoenix, but only because I'm older and less invested in non MCU stuff; the disaster of X3 ruined me. Dark Phoenix was just a sad, boring, mediocre experience. X3 was aggressively, insistently bad
Never forget that they actually drew inspiration from a viral YouTube video and Vinnie Jones screamed “I’m the juggernaut, bitch!” I wanted to leave the theater after that scene
We need important questions answered, like would Spider-Man be able to “wield” Mjolnir via his webbing
