If they said cool that’s fine keep it on us to the people that spent the bare minimum it would piss off all your other customers who bought the SR+.

Basically the people who paid 35k already got a freebie perk: they got loaned a better car for a month+ than what they paid for. If they want what they had then pony up the 4K.

And Tesla wasted a lot of fucking money by putting those perks in the car and later turning them off.

Maybe the time savings Tesla realized from not having to switch production between heated and non-heated seats was worth more than the costs of the heated seats. Maybe Tesla thinks customers will like the heated seats enough to unlock them. Maybe it's a mix of both.

Or maybe this is a prime example of why they lose a ton of money?

There’s alot more to it then that.

It’s this plus you also have to realize they would have to redesign a whole new battery pack with machines dedicated to SR packs.

It’s all about volume and efficiency of the production line.

Maybe it is. But since we don't really have any knowledge about it, it's pretty ignorant to make definitive claims one way or the other.

Considering auto makers that are profitable dont do it, I tend to lean that it's probably just a water on Tesla's part to meet a $35k number that Elon threw out there.

The code to control the seats, extend battery life, autopilot, etc isn't free.

That as developed for the higher priced cars. It would probably cost more to create two types of seats vs one. It is more to create two seats of code vs one.

The code to control the seats isn't developed for free so it costs more

Right, I get that. That's why Tesla should put non-heated seats in the car if the buyer doesn't buy heated seats. Like every other auto maker out there.

Yea the margins on the base 3 are non existent, but clearly to Tesla they weighed the pros and cons financially of the cost between a different interior, battery pack, seats, changing the production line etc. than just software limiting the SR+ which they produce at volume.

I guess I just don't understand making definitive statements about a decision without having any knowledge about the factors related to that decision.

But then again I also don't understand posting about a company for months on end without knowing the prices and differences of its products.

This is like Jeep putting their 700 hp engine in every base Cherokee and just putting a governor on it for the owners that didnt pay for it instead of just putting a 6 cyl in the base models.

And yall are trying to say it makes sense

I’m explaining to you the reason why they went with a limited SR+ over a completely different model. It makes sense.

If you want to argue that they shouldn’t sell that 35k model go ahead I agree Musk shouldn’t even offer it. Apparently he feels the need to honor it.

Tesla Homers*- no no no it could be this, this, or that. Definitely not them wasting money bc Elon threw out a number they couldnt get to without just giving it away. Anything but that!

That's what I'm saying. If they can't make the car without all the goodies, just turned off, they shouldn't sell it. It's just a waste. We all know why they did it, and that's Elon making promises they couldn't get to otherwise.

    You don’t get it.

    Volume
It’s because I can get 10,000 units of said electric motor at a cheaper price than 5,000 units. Multiply this across for seats, battery packs (which would require its own assembly line) etc.

    Efficiency
It’s because I can get 6000 cars done a week out of my factory line when they only produce 3 model variants compared to 5000 cars a week with 4 or 5 model variants.
That means my labor cost is being more efficient and providing me more cars per hour that I pay them.

You compare that with the cost savings of a little pricier interior and 20 miles of range.

Literally on this page you said, "maybe it's a prime example of why they lose a lot of money and I replied, "maybe it is."

It's okay to not make definitive claims when we don't have all (or any) information. Not everything is cut and dry a good or bad decision on its face.

They can make the car without all the goodies. Would they make any more money than break even? Fuck no. No car company would last long if they only made their very base model.

You are also making the mistake of assuming the COGS of this car will always stay the same and never improve.

Weird, you'd think the manufacturers that are profitable would have figured out this hack instead of actually putting the cheap options in the base model.
