One of my fav highlight to look at, fuller could get open like nobody I have ever seen. Route running was on point and way too fast to cover.

Loved Tate too for his toughness after the catch but fuller was schooling fools. No way you don’t double team a guy like him.

I haven’t rewatched any games from that era because of that douche. I am sure I told the story before but 2014 I had a gf that won lunch with the staff (just me and her) they were all really cool and signed a ton of stuff but BVG was unbelievably weird

Will go to my grave with being in the building for the handshake being one of my highlights. In fact, it was the first non-B&G and non-Shamrock Series game that I was able to take my sons to. They may never be able to top that.

Was hanging a TV and remodeling the home theater at My dad's place today and my youtube pulled up the 88 championship game and then then the '93 FSU game on the second TV. It was hilarious how much the announcers were gushing about how fast ND was and that not even NFL teams could match it. Fuller would have fit right in.

  19. Ehrensberger was worth taking a risk on considering how well ND has recruited the defensive line recently (words I would not have expected to say). His upside is pretty high. If they offer the other Euro I think it is just an indication of how poor DB recruiting has gone. Strange that in a class where they have landed nearly all their top guys on the board at other positions that they are down to plan C/D at defensive back.

    Long article
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Kyle Hamilton watched Notre Dame’s Cotton Bowl demolition in person last December, seated in an end zone suite with the perfect vantage point of Clemson receivers Justyn Ross and Tee Higgins. When Ross torched the Irish secondary on 52-yard and 42-yard touchdowns in the second quarter, they came right at Hamilton. When Higgins caught an acrobatic 19-yard touchdown just two seconds before halftime, Hamilton could have nearly reached over the railing to break it up.

And yet, Hamilton got more out of those days in Dallas than the reality check Clemson put on his future program in the College Football Playoff. For a player who’s always thinking ahead, the week gave Hamilton a chance to focus on both his Notre Dame career — Hamilton will arrive here later this week — and what ideally comes after it.

While in Texas, the five-star safety connected with family friend Jalen Kimber, a four-star cornerback in the 2020 class who’s committed to Georgia and was recruited by Notre Dame. Kimber had been working with defensive back guru Clay Mack, who’s trained first-round picks in two of the past three NFL Drafts.

Mack, a former player at Mississippi State, counts New York Jets Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams among his clients. Oakland Raiders first-round pick Jonathan Abram, who went one pick before Irish defensive tackle Jerry Tillery this spring, worked with Mack in his draft prep. It was all enough to get Hamilton’s attention.

“I wanted to work with those guys, the best of the best,” Hamilton said. “So we talked about it and decided to fly him to Atlanta about a month-and-a-half ago.”

Mack spent about four days around Atlanta, training Hamilton and incoming cornerback K.J. Wallace. They worked around Marist High School, where Hamilton spent the past four years growing from a mid-major basketball prospect to a football player rated No. 15 overall by 247Sports. That makes Hamilton’s the fourth-highest rated prospect on that network of the Brian Kelly era, trailing only Jaylon Smith, Aaron Lynch and Tommy Kraemer. The first two are in the NFL. The third will be a four-year starter in South Bend.

Expectations around Hamilton have him following a similar track, even with two senior starters back in Jalen Elliott and Alohi Gilman. The work with Mack isn’t designed to help Hamilton overtake a couple potential captains, it is about making sure Hamilton is as available as possible this fall. That’s how all college careers start, getting on the field. Becoming a star there comes later. But it feels like it’s probably going to come.

“It’s rare that you get to come across somebody that has the genetics of Kyle,” Mack said. “And he absolutely loves Notre Dame. Loves it. He’s 10 toes in.”

Mack trained Hamilton like a cornerback, focused on the footwork and techniques college coaches usually don’t have time to drill when there’s an entire position to teach and a game plan to install. The drills were graduate level stuff — releases, jams, schemes and angles. Many of the drills were tells, both what Mack thinks of Hamilton’s potential and where Notre Dame sees him. They spent time working at the line of scrimmage, set up like a nickel or cornerback would.

It’s not lost on anyone that the Irish have questions at both.

“My philosophy is you’re not a corner or a safety, you’re a DB,” Mack said. “So don’t ever be in the mindset that you’re playing one particular position. You’re handcuffing yourself when you do that. If the nickel guy goes down and you’re the backup safety, you’re going to forfeit yourself not to get on the field because you don’t have that skill set? I don’t believe in that.”

The expectations for Hamilton are immense enough that Notre Dame’s staff has set no limit on where it could use him. Hamilton said the messaging he’s picked up from the staff is he’ll compete to back up both Gilman and Elliott, two players who logged almost every meaningful snap of last season. They also want him to challenge for the vacant nickel job, where Nick Coleman and Houston Griffith did a job share last season following Shaun Crawford’s torn ACL in training camp. Coleman graduated, Griffith will likely start at cornerback and Crawford is still in recovery mode.

On top of all that, Hamilton said some of the footwork drills with Mack double as wide receiver drills, which hasn’t exactly been ruled out if Notre Dame needs the help and the 6-foot-3, 205-pound athlete with a 40-inch vertical jump and 122-inch broad jump can help.

“They said they might use me in some red zone stuff,” Hamilton said. “We’ll see. I don’t care how I get to play.”

Hamilton doesn’t care how much work it takes to get there, either.

Ed Miller started training Kyle Hamilton during his freshman year, back when the biggest recruiting news in Hamilton’s life was the basketball offer from Tulane. It was a casual bet on his DNA, which included his father Derrek, who played a couple seasons in the NBA and a decade overseas. Older brother Tyler Hamilton spent four years on the Penn basketball team before making a graduate transfer to William & Mary last month.

Miller, who owns The Rack Athletic and Performance Center, about five miles north of Marist High School, got his hands on Hamilton intermittently the past three-plus years as high school football, high school basketball and college recruiting forced regular breaks. Since February, though, Hamilton has been at The Rack roughly three times a week, adding about 15 pounds from his senior football season.

It’s not that Hamilton doesn’t follow the program of Notre Dame strength coach Matt Balis, it’s just that when he’s with Miller, the training heads in its own direction. If the work with Mack was preparation for Notre Dame and beyond, the work with Miller is more here and now, working explosive movements and keeping Hamilton limber even as the weight adds.

“The kid is probably the most or one of the most freaky natural athletes I’ve ever worked with,” Miller said. “There’s a hope he can come in and contribute really early.”

Hamilton’s training at The Rack often includes Wallace and incoming linebacker JD Bertrand, plus Virginia signee Nick Jackson. Miller compared and contrasted Hamilton to Jackson, both defensive prospects with height and agility, but it’s the explosion that sets Hamilton apart. Miller said Hamilton and Jackson both posted a 4.25 in the pro agility drill, a strong mark for any incoming freshman. Where Hamilton separates is the vertical, bettering Jackson by eight inches.

Miller also said Hamilton has hit a 55-inch box jump in training.

“When I think football and I think safety, Kyle is what you want,” Miller said. “His build and his height, to me, that’s what you want in a safety. And the crazy thing is his ability to react, too.

“I’ve worked with pros, guys who are 6-3 or 6-4 with more weight than him, but they can’t put one foot in front of the other unless they know what they’re doing ahead of time. I got out and watched a couple games this year at Marist and it was literally like watching a grown man play with a bunch of kids.”

That’s not to say Hamilton will arrive at Notre Dame this week with some scouting report that reads like a fait accompli. When Miller put Hamilton and his other trainees through a 40-yard sprint last week in sticky, wet conditions, Hamilton posted a 4.8. That’s nearly two-tenths of a second slower than his time at The Opening Finals last summer. Miller said the times were consistently slow for all his trainees.

“It was a laser for the 40, so we didn’t get the hand times where you get what you want,” Hamilton said. “I’m not really making excuses and stuff like that. It was humbling right before we go up there, because it’s not where we need it to be. It’s kind of good to see we haven’t arrived yet.”

Still, that testing feels more like an aberration than an omen for Hamilton’s freshman season.

Miller said Hamilton’s 10-yard sprint of 1.66 is the fastest he’s ever tested. For a numbers guy like Miller, that’s hard evidence. But having spent four years around Hamilton, there is more than times, inches and weights in Miller’s evaluation. Basically, he can tell the difference in Hamilton before he tests to verify it.

“As far as kids his age, he’s in a completely different ballpark,” Miller said. “I’ve had kids who are strong, but to be able to display that athletic prowess, he’s on a completely different playing field.”

Defensive coordinator Clark Lea didn’t take the bait. But he craved it.

Speaking two days before the Blue-Gold Game in April, Lea was asked about the prospects for Kyle Hamilton this fall. Could he start? Could he win the nickel? It was the only time all spring any coach was asked specifically about a player not yet on the roster. Notre Dame’s freshman class included 10 early enrollees, players already here, already practicing. And yet, not all of those players were discussed by the coaching staff during spring ball, reinforcing how Hamilton is just a bit different.

“Kyle Hamilton, any expectation for any of these guys coming in is going to be overblown,” Lea said. “No one is going to be camera ready nor is anyone going to be counted out.”

The math for Hamilton is clear ahead of his enrollment and assumption of the No. 14, a jersey vacated by former safety Devin Studstill, who did a graduate transfer to South Florida. The number has no significance to Hamilton, who’s generally indifferent to this kind of stuff. What matters, matters. And the arbitrary number sown onto an Under Armour jersey does not matter.

More significant is how Hamilton can work his way onto the field, with three other safeties in competition behind Gilman and Elliott. Derrik Allen is coming off a surprising redshirt season. D.J. Brown played in two games at cornerback last fall as a freshman before shifting to safety in spring ball. Litchfield Ajavon enrolls with Hamilton this week.

In other words, Hamilton’s fight for time means beating out players with more time in Notre Dame’s system but no appreciable experience on Saturdays.

“I’m not gonna say I’m going to come in and start or win the Heisman Trophy,” Hamilton said. “Obviously, I want to start. If I don’t have that role as a starter, that’s fine. I want to start, but if it’s special teams, defense, offense, scout team, I’ll do it.

“I’m feeling a little bit of everything right now, mostly excited. I’ve been ready to get up there for so long.”

In a literal sense, the journey to Notre Dame starts at 7:30 a.m. Friday when Hamilton flies to Chicago and then heads east roughly 90 miles to South Bend. In reality, getting to Notre Dame has taken much longer, with the work alongside Mack this spring and training under Miller for four years just mile markers along the route.

A week from now, Notre Dame’s coaching staff will get what it’s always believed it would be getting in Hamilton when he steps foot on campus with no looking back. At that point there won’t be a need for the coaching staff to downplay the five-star safety. They’ll begin to get the first-person view of Hamilton that everybody around him has had the past four years.

“He’s going to have to get used to playing against a level that whoever the best guy was in high school, getting used to playing against that guy every week, every day for that matter in practice,” Mack said. “But Notre Dame fits his disposition. That’s why he chose Notre Dame.

He’s not so caught up in all the hoopla glitz and the glamour stuff. It’s not the hoopla of being at the University of Miami or Florida State or whatever. Same cachet, same tradition, pageantry. It’s just different.”

So, too, is Kyle Hamilton. Now everybody is about to figure that out in a new way.
