Yes the CYA FC relationship. So it’s correct. Just making sure you agree that going above 50cya for him might be an issue in the long run. Which tabs are you referring to in your pro tip and why is that the case?
You can have zero issues with pools from 30-100. I cleaned pools with 1000ppl weekend bathing loads and never had a single algae bloom or illness reported. I am out of the cleaning game and buying chemicals now but you will need to research that yourself. Do not let that distract you from the fact that I check the chemistry on every pool I go to and the ones that experience the vast majority of issues all have a common variable. It is not low pH either.
I agree that you “can” have zero issues. But the science argues that you lose FC effectiveness at higher cya. Why are you being cryptic? What’s the variable?
I know it might appear like I have nothing better to do than just answer your questions but I am busy. I have also spent years busting my ass, spending my own money and time (which costs me more money) on continuing education, pay every month for licensing and insurance, and routinely answer questions for paying customers and even visit them on nights and weekends if necessary when I have my own family and recreational activities to attend to. You painted with a very wide brush on pretty much all people in the pool industry due to your bad experience with one company. Why do I help you again? You get your info from the internet. The info of which I speak is available on the internet. Just not from me on the internet.
As a neutral observer from Belarus you bashed his whole industry and basically called them thieves then expect him to write out detailed responses on your time line. All the while explaining how anyone can do it if they can just Google stuff and spend 5-10 minutes a day
Sensitivity has nothing to due with it. You pay people for services. Zack Zedalis touched on it earlier. It is the same reason that 2 of the 3 major pool equipment manufacturers have essentially eliminated warranties on products sold online. If you want to treat the pool industry as a place with no professionals and rely on info you find online, go for it. The web is your oyster.
Well I believe most of his industry is problematic. Sounds like he’s not one of the issues. But we clearly disagree on some things and it would take scientific rationale to change my mind. Not anecdotes. I do believe that anyone can balance their chemistry in 5-10 minutes a day with the right information and resources. The pool company showed up to my house for 10 minutes a week and they claimed to be able to do it so it seems that it should be possible spending 7x that time doing it on your own pool. I get where you and he are coming from though. I was overly aggressive. Sorry.
You know that there are many bad professionals out there that aren’t well trained in these stores doling out bad advice. What’s the average consumer supposed to do?!
Had a thought - if you back wash a sand filter hard and frequently the water exchange will probably keep your cya low enough. Using that much water is frowned upon in certain parts of the country though.
If you have a sand or a DE filter, you can keep cya levels in check for a long time as you should be backwashing minimally once a month. Using water is part of having a pool.
It has more to do with than just efficiency, it can stay at 10, 20, 30 psi (all pools are different) for months. If you are not back-washing, you are slowly crushing your internal filter components and that process can not be undone. You are looking at increased ongoing maintenance costs.
I don’t have a pool (I just hop the fence at the community pool at RRR with my counterfeit wristband), but the last few pages might be the the worst I’ve ever read on TMB. Congrats to all involved.
If you're tapped out from all the back and forth today I totally understand, please ignore, but what would you recommend as the correct UV system?
The pool company I was using was backwashing weekly and then adding 1.5lbs DE to a 48 sqft filter. You can understand my frustration.
I have the opposite opinion. Watching Zack Zedalis and a.tramp in their element has me swooning like a schoolgirl
Wells Fargo and multiple other banking institutions have lied to and screwed people out of lots of money. Better invest your money in rolled up socks in your mattress and not deal with banks anymore.
When I said correct UV system it is that not all UVs do the same thing. There are UV systems that operate at different wavelengths on the light spectrum. Pretty much any UV system is good, only few will do what I was referencing. The biggest thing to know about UV is that they should be installed based on flow rate for your particular pool. This is best done by installing a variable speed pump in conjunction with the UV system if the pool does not already have one. I can discuss more this weekend. I am about a month behind in routine maintenance, have been without power for 2 days, and am getting new calls by the minute as Dallas neighborhoods get power restored and customers discover the damage their pools received from the storm inn sunday.
Thank you kindly. I'm currently looking at Pentair variable speed pumps (IntelliFlo, SuperFlo, etc) paired with a UV system from Delta UV or Paramount. I guess I'd just continue using the offline chlorine injector for residual FC, but could also buy a new salt cell. Pool is approximately 12k gallons btw.
It’s fine. We’re all free to worship at whatever alter we see fit. No hard feelings. In fact I think I apologized quite clearly for coming on too strong.
I'm in Birmingham, AL. Not sure how long the season will be as I've never owned a pool before, but one of my favorite pastimes is swimming in really cold water so I think I'll swim 9 months out of the year or more. I don't foresee draining it in the winter unless we need to.
lol at worship at the alter. while i'm an admitted pool dumbass i do want to take care of my own for the most part. i also understand some things will be out of my range and will pay a professional. tramp and zach obviously know their shit and you obviously had a bad experience and googled a bunch of shit. i will not say i know more than you bc i most def don't but i'm also not pretending to know more than people that do this for a living. zach gave me a name via pm to use to help me out locally. he made nothing off that. cliffs: STFU and learn some shit
The reason I ask is if you are looking at installing a salt system, you will still have to use tabs about half of the year even with it. Once water temps get down to 60-65 degrees (varies with the manufacturer), the system shuts itself off. The reason is due to the lower conductivity of cold water. The colder the water, the less accurate the salt system can read the salt in the water. You would have to have salt levels several thousand ppm higher than needed for it to register enough salt in the pool to generate chlorine. This is bad for the pool and the equipment so the industry solution is just to trigger them to shut down. Granted, you need far less chlorine when water is cold but chlorine is still needed year round. This is one of my main arguments against salt cells. Spending $1000-$2500 on a chlorination system that can only chlorinate about 1/2 the year. Ideally, you want as little chlorine as possible in your pool without causing issues. Using tabs in conjunction with a UV system allows you to do that.
That all makes perfect sense to me and the UV/Chlorine combo is what I'm leaning towards. Do you have any preference on UV systems? I believe I've seen you post that you're a fan of Pentair pumps.
It was just an expression of speech. Thanks for the advice and good luck to you as well. I, too, pay professionals for things out of my range and don’t know everything. We’re all hopefully learning. Again, Sorry to ruffle any feathers and I’ll mind my business now and not chime in!
Damn I thought some sweet ass pictures were posted and instead I came a learnt about CYA. I can contribute bc my dad made me hold calcium as kid and poured water on it and it hurt.
I get why you're annoyed with him, but I'm curious as to some of his questions too. Not the arguementative ones, but more on the best type of tabs for the pool and also what the common issues are. My pool seems to always have issues. I just ordered the kit lechnerd posted a few pages ago and look forward to trying to solve the inconsistencies of my pool. This thread has motivated me to get my pool game under control. I spent an hour last night doing finishing cleanup from the mess I came back to Sunday. Here's the pool last night:
Where you do live? I can likely recommend a dealer to visit. There is a new slow dissolution al hypo tablet on the market as well that I’m happy to discuss via PM. It is cya free
I'm kinda curious to what they use for slow dissolution. That is pretty cool stuff in drugs. It ended up being was polymer most of the time or osmotic pump.
Gonna hire a guy to teach me the basics but I need some one time advice before I can get him to house. We move into new house in two weeks. Lady we bought the house from will have just completed her 5th week of swimming lessons so I'm sure it's full of little kid piss. What should I do immediately before letting my kids jump in? Salt water pool TIA
Most likely you are fine with just shocking the pool and then waiting about 6 hours for the shock to wear off. If you are overly worried you have 3 options. 1. Drain and refill the pool. 2. Hyper-chlorinate the water up to a point to kill the toughest of biological contaminates https://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/sw...-when-chlorine-stabilizer-is-in-the-water.pdf 3. Have a UV sanitizer and let operate for 24 hours.
Also, if DE or cartridge filter I recommend having it cleaned once you take ownership. Edit: this is just to know you have good filtration from the start. If you have filter issues it can be a long summer for a new pool owner.
