The elephant’s foot at Chernobyl always freaked me out, but I guess the danger of it has dropped significantly. I need to watch this miniseries.
A) it’s a masterpiece. Watch it ASAP. B) I told my wife about the elephant’s foot before we started the series and how unbelievably fascinating it is before we watched it. They never even address it in the series :(
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant's_Foot_(Chernobyl) The Elephant’s Foot is a large mass of black corium with many layers, externally resembling tree bark and glass. It was formed during the Chernobyl disaster in April 1986, and discovered in December 1986. It is named for its wrinkly appearance, resembling the foot of an elephant. It lies beneath Reactor No. 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, under reactor room 217. For more, click above. But beware, reading about this may push you down a deep rabbit hole of YouTube videos and such on Chernobyl.
Super ultra crazy radioactive magma that formed in the shape of an elephant's foot at reactor 4 at Chernobyl. It would kill you in under 3 minutes of exposure when originally discovered months after the accident. Allegedly it originally had to be photographed by a special camera using a mirror because the radiation was so strong it'd destroy the photograph as soon as a photo was taken.
Last time they went to the Elephants foot it was about a 30 sec. max stay time. That was considerably longer than the 10 seconds from the first pictures they took.
