I havent gotten that far yet but what is so difficult to understand? What is that he didnt agree with it?
could have done without the 30 minutes railing against analytics rest data they clearly don't understand but just "by watching the games" they don't agree with
Related: Does everyone in the Northeast refer to their family members by their relationship to themselves -- Nephew Kyle, Cousin Sal, etc.? (I'm aware Sal is Jimmy Kimmel's cousin, not Bill's.) I've never heard of that anywhere else in my life. Is this a showbiz thing? I referred to my aunts/uncles as Aunt Kelly, Uncle Jim, etc., but only up until like age 10.
nobody does that. I think it's just a character name. that said, I never stopped calling my aunts & uncles "Aunt..." or "Uncle...". I'm 36 and still do that.
how many of the Oscar movies did you watch from that year? It honestly should have won. because fucking Shape of Water won and Get Out will be something talked about for 50+ years
at least it is being talked about 2 years later. Everyone else forgot Shape of Water exists. It is a really good movie. I'm not a super fan. Just think it is classic Ryen to say the movie is meh because it was A) really popular and B) discussed race
Russillo, much like Rogan, is the dumb man’s smart guy. Really admire that rant on 2,000 minutes and how it’s not the same for everyone. Well, if some unnamed front office people don’t trust the science, I’ll just assume Ryen only talks to the smart guys. Can’t wait until next week when Bill has Gladwell on so Ryen can argue 10,000 Hours is stupid and not accurate for everyone.
haven't listened to todays but russillo constantly talking about crafting what take he wants to give and it largely being a reaction to nba media consensus is bad it makes him seem like he's not being honest he just wants attention
I think he's hilarious and Bill's best guest other than when he does the Rewatchables with Chris and Sean. His gym corner from last week was great.
It starts to feel like the same episode over and over when it’s those two. Russillo is the master of “I see this thing on Twitter about how the Warriors should consider resting Steph and Klay for game 6 and I’m like...are you serious?” We get it Ryen, you are smarter than random twitter trolls or the hot take artists of FS1. Congrats.
amazes me there's a demand for Russillo, Joe House, or Bill's Dad. Or ppl blindly consume whatever the ringer puts out there, so Bill is rewarded for incessantly recycling the same cast of characters. That games, this NBA Finals, deserves much better treatment than Bill's nepotism.
I like Joe House, just as a human being. I've never listened to a pod with Bill's dad. Never have, never will.
Surprised you guys dont like Russillo more. Find him pretty funny and glad he synced up with Van Pelt again.
I get the feeling you'd enjoy a 25 minute pod of Bill farting into the mic, so I understand how it might surprise you.
Not even close. I don’t love everything he does nor do I listen to all his podcasts. His dad and House usually don’t get my interest. Russillo I find funny and I like his Dual Threat podcast. I just don’t get why some of you seem to hate a majority of the stuff he says or does yet continue to listen.
I still like Simmons pods, hes learned that getting it uploaded fast helps get more listens and I fall prey to that as it's often the first pod up after a live event. I largely think they both inhabit a similar lane of regular old crotchety guy who likes being a contrarian for the attention. If I wanted drive time sports takes I can get that elsewhere, I like when he has real NBA reporters and analysts on instead.
I like KOC and Tjarks a lot too and I get that point of view. I dont think they necessarily are doing it for the attention but that they are 49 and 42 and are a little more old school with some things. That's probably why I enjoy it and agree with a decent amount seeing as I'm 50 year old living in a 38 year old body.
It seems like some are going to bitch about Simmons pods no matter what. People complain that no one calls him on anything when he has Ringer people there, but Russillo has called him on a lot of stuff in the pods I've listened to and makes fun of him fairly regularly, but people don't like that, either. They're putting pods that are 2 hours long out on a consistent basis. You're going to hear things you disagree with or don't like because that's the case with anyone you listen to talk about sports for 2 hours. There are a bunch of people on here I like a lot and agree with on most things, but disagree with them fairly regularly on certain subjects. That's okay. I liked Russillo for a while and like him less now. He tries to pretend to be too self aware sometimes when he really isn't, and also thinks he's better than all the other media people who get more credit/pub/money/opportunities than him because he's bitter for some reason about it. That gets him to say a bunch of stuff where he pretends like everyone has the wrong take and he has the right one, or take one thing a couple people said and make it out like it's some media-wide theory that he understands better. It's annoying, but it's also why I don't listen to most of his stuff anymore. You know what you're getting with both of them, and if it makes you mad at some point isn't that kind of on you for continually listening? That's the part I don't get.
I'm just glad the Ringer puts out so much content that I usually have something I can listen to everyday in the car or on the weekends doing yard work.
when i work out at 9am the morning after a finals game it tends to be the only pod up that I follow, their timing schtick gets me to listen but I agree completely with the bold
calling him out on a lot of stuff and making fun of him regularly is a bit of a reach, sure he'll disagree with him sometimes or make jokes that fly over Bill's head but it's always wink-wink, nudge-nudge type stuff. Its not like he really comes after him, there's no real hostility involved with any of it. You're right that the more content he pumps out, the worse he's going to be. But how often do the Pardon My Take guys do episodes? Seems like their fanbase universally loves their stuff. I'm a big No Laying Up fan and even if I disagree with things they say, I still think it's quality content week in and week out. They have a pretty dedicated fanbase too. If you look at the Bill Simmons subreddit, the usual top comments are mostly in line with the "hate-listeners" so I don't think it's unique to posters here. It's become part of the fun (or THE fun) of listening to his pods, there's a reason every tweet he posts instantly gets "67 wins lol" replies. Some people find entertainment in schadenfreude it's the reason I'm more likely to watch a Notre Dame vs ______ game on Saturdays instead of a ranked Big 12 game. I can at least find entertainment and enjoyment in watching something potentially bad happen to ND than I would some 52-47 game between teams I have no investment in. There's a lot of traffic in LA and unfortunately the pods I enjoy listening to the most are usually once a week type deals. The bolded quote above could pretty much describe following sports in general currently. I know what I'm gonna get in the NBA/NFL/CFB and it's not what I want, but at least I can watch hoping for bad things to happen to Golden State, the Pats, and Alabama.
I think Russillo is a pretty good observer of the game of basketball, but once he starts veering into things other than what exactly is happening on the floor during the game, you start to get a pretty clear picture of what a meathead dipshit he is
Bill misses a guy like Lowe on his pods. A guy who works harder than him and is more knowledgeable and clued in around the league. Conversely, I think Lowe could use a little Ringer flair on more of his pods. But that's why people like him. Straight and to the point.
I said "I Think" which means it is my opinion as to how I consume their content. I also pointed out that it was not in line with the general philosophy of his pods or perhaps the desire of his audience. cool joke tho
Bill misses having the best basketball journalist (Woj is only better at breaking stories, but isn’t in the same stratosphere when it comes to analysis) on the planet on his pods? You don’t say... The Lowe Post is appointment listening for NBA fans, he’s high level, thoughtful, measured, and highly intelligent. He’s far and away the best in the game.
russilo tries to hide his quasi white male supremacy shit but he really let it slip there with, "i follow the atlantic for the unintentional comedy" and then his brief rant about superhero actors that are non-americans.
I wonder why he never hooked up with Barstool to do a show for them, he seems like a much more natural fit there than on the Ringer
that was the first ringer pod i had listened to in a while, i think partly because the finals has kind of been a disappointment and game 5 was a really great game. it was a good pod. i like russilo and simmons together, ordinarily. but i need both of them in doses and that "why are americans losing these superhero acting jobs to these foreigners?!" take just came so far out of left field and sounded like it had so much veiled frustration. really funny but weird.
Simmons tried to do basically the nationalists case for rooting for the Warriors take a week ago and it fell flat. Probably because he had House the communist on instead of russillo.
Russillo is good as a guest, but that doesn’t stop him from annoying me with meathead or conservative takes
Didn't see this yesterday.... Who goes at a podcast host with hostility when debating basketball on a consistent basis? Especially someone who is on the pod frequently. That seems like a weird line. I guess my point is that you're saying you listen for things you can either make fun of or hate those guys for saying. From my perspective, it's kind of hard to then read your critique and think it's relevant to anything because you're seeking things to nitpick or criticize out of spite/dislike. But that's probably on me at this point for reading the thread and taking it seriously enough to comment on, as well.
