I’m irrationally irritated by hits to my scores. It’s what keeps me from playing the churning game more (and that’s coming off of a 10d honeymoon in Greece where points paid for our business class seats and eight nights in five-star resorts.)
i had one delinquent payment from a student loan from 7 years ago that finally fell off this month. that, along with some clearing balances (not carried forward from the previous month, just paying a bill and not having additional expenses) on cards and my score jumped nearly 50 20 points.
For those of you that are concerned with maximizing your credit score, it's a good practice to pay off/down your balance prior to the statement close date, especially if you utilize more than 30-40% of your available credit limit during the month. Credit card issuers generally report account balances to credit bureaus on or around when your account statement closes. If you have a high balance on your card, your credit card issuer will report high credit utilization, even if you pay off your balance in full before the payment due date. Your credit utilization ratio accounts for 30% of your credit score, so doing something as simple as changing when you pay your bill can have a significant impact on your score.
My wive froze her credit a while back. If I'm adding her as a cosigner to one of my cards, will she need to have her credit unfrozen?
It's fine every once in a while, but as a general practice, you should not be paying off your entire balance before the statement close date. Otherwise it gets reported as $0 usage and no on-time payment. A lengthy record of on-time payments, along with a good mix of accounts (preferably open for a long time) is how you maintain a high score
Really your credit score should be looked at from 2 angles: 1. Building a good general credit score -vs- 2. Achieving the highest possible score at a specific date (say for a loan/mortgage application) There are things to do for scenario #2 that you shouldn't be concerned with for scenario #1. And things that are ok for #1 that should explicitly be avoided #2.
Data point for those up against the 5/24. 1. Application for 2nd CIP denied for too many new accounts in past 2 years (3 main, 2 authorized users) 2. Removed myself as AU from one account, waited 2 weeks for credit report to update, and applied again. 3. Denied 2nd time, because 1st credit app denial was still active (for 30 days) 4. Called in, had my application reconsidered, had to answer some questions about nature of business, income and profit amounts, requested credit limit. 5. 20 mins later.... APPROVED!

i'm kind of cynical and assume like death devaluation is coming for us all made me more aggressive using points
So ridiculous because their points already sucked balls. I assume most if not all points programs will move towards this model (even someone like chase)?
On another note wanted to report back about those applying for unlimited CIP's. I was approved for my CIP4 using normal name and SSN just as I did with my previous applications. After I meet this spend I will do the same for my wife. Like I mentioned earlier, getting approved for the CIP over and over comes down to 1) velocity of applications 2) credit (with chase) to income ratio which you wanted to keep below 50% as a rule of thumb. If anyone has any questions about this let me know...its 100k points everytime.
My only regret of breezing past 5/24 but as the hilton post indicates, you can't just hang around at 4/24 and hope. Shit goes sideways Happy you guys are killing CIPs though
Nice. We just met my GFs 3rd CIP bonus this week, and I just got approved for my 3rd CIP yesterday. Not sure how far more I want to push due to shutdown concerns though.
As of the last time I inquired about this on Reddit, shutdowns are not a concern as of around last fall. You can gauge how much rope you have left by the credit limits you are getting on the new CIP's. I am going at a pace where I have already cancelled my CIP1 for my wife and I and will be cancelling our CIP2 in the fall when the AF hits. This keeps our Chase CL low and CL to debt below 50% so we can continue to get cards. As long as you don't get greedy I do not see how this will be an issue moving forward unless Chase changes their process.
They change shit all the time and Chase is smart. It will happen, but it always happens so that's why you take advantage of it before it does
Disappointed about the Hilton devaluation. I might downgrade to the no AF card after my anniversary. I've already made a profit on it from just the airline credit, but it sucks that their points are the Zimbabwean dollar of the points world.
For those with multiple CIPs, does your 2nd CIP automatically show up under your existing business account online? Or do you have to call and have them combined (similar to combining personal and biz accts)?
I’ve got an AA advantage platinum select card that I’ve had for awhile. I want to get out of the $95 AF and churn some cards. I only have about 15k miles left on my advantage account. If I cancel the card, do I lose those miles? I want to sign up for the same card with a 65k mailer I got in the mail. Pls advise.
Just downgrade it to a card that has no annual fee. Also with that beautiful avatar you need to add Spurs to your fan of section.
Yeah it did for me as well. I actually called Chase thinking I had to do something to get it on my existing account and signed in ad there it was.
Downgraded that card. I’ve got the Hilton aspire that I will cancel before my second anniversary date. I also have CSR that I’ve had since it debuted. Does CIP make the most sense for me next?
CIPs are almost never instant approval. Consult the flowchart on the previous page to check your status.
Use my referal :) : https://www.referyourchasecard.com/21a/7J85X9N6D2 Believe it does as long as you use SSN on both or EIN on both. Otherwise you will have to get them to combine. I've gotten 7 between my wife and I and 0 have been autoapproved. As mentioned above follow the flowchart I posted on the last page.
I had a really bad experience on Delta last week that I think I should get a bunch of miles for. What is the best avenue to complain? Is there anything I should make sure to say to maximize what I get?
So I am currently "platinum" status, but they're telling me to strive for earning "titanium elite" status. What is it that makes titanium > platinum? Is it the "elite" qualifier? On the hierarchy of precious metals, only rhodium is more precious than platinum (source 1, source 2), so that has to be it but at the end of the day I feel like they are really cheapening their brand by using a non-precious metal as one of their top tiers of status. The names of these status levels have gotten kind of ridiculous.
First checked bag is free with the Delta Skymiles card, which I have. Can my gf use this to check a bag for free or does it have to be the person whose name is on the card?
Fiancé is titanium elite, get auto upgrades anywhere we stay if available. 5 guaranteed upgrades a year. It’s been pretty cool. Gotten some 1200 square foot rooms for the price of a standard room.
Generally the bag is only free if the reservation is booked with that card. So if you booked both flights and paid with that card it should be free. There's also usually a limit as to how many people can get a free bag per reservation but it's definitely at least the two of you
