Haven’t followed the story aside from hearing about the shady shit the administration did to get the question on the census, but this is an honest and ignorance based question: Why is it bad that we ask people if they are a natural born vs naturalized citizen of the US? Isn’t it already on the long form of the census? I mean, I understand the way it was implemented is shitty and underhand and it was done in the hopes to fuck over the Democrats, but I guess I don’t understand why it’s wrong to ask someone that question on the census.
I listened to the New York Times podcast Caliphate while driving this week, and the indoctrination process used by ISIS and the American Taliban are pretty much identical. Ben Shapiro is their Anwar al-Awlaki, and down goes the tunnel from there.
Can't help but chuckle that the actual GOP logo wasn't used. Funny how the QAnon and other Americhristian nutters never spin conspiracy theories about why their log was changed in 2000 to an obvious ode to Satan.
immigrants by and large live in progressive districts. the thought is it’ll discourage immigrants from responding on the census, allowing the GOP and Dr. Gerry Mander to redraw the maps based on populations and give them an electoral advantage
The census isn’t about citizenship or voting persons. It never has been - otherwise slaves would not have been included in the census. It’s just about knowing who is living in this country. It’s being included now to depress immigrant response numbers and lead to an inaccurate result for the tally.
1) It’s redundant, citizenship is already tracked by the census bureau on an annual basis 2) They are not asking who’s a natural born citizen vs who’s a naturalized citizen. They are trying to discourage noncitizen from answering the questions. 3) ignoring how they did it, why they did it and who did it is a stupid thing to do.
The other extremely disingenuous argument I've heard is this kind of question was asked in the census back in the 40s, you know a time where our borders were more or less completely open.
To take it a step further, unless they were going to change laws to make it such that undocumented immigrants do not count towards representation then the only goal is to suppress the number of respondents in order to lower the amount of representatives in states like California and NY. NY already shells out more than 45 Billion dollars from it's taxpayers to subsidize other States and I think that number is rising by about 15 Billion due to the new tax bill that penalizes NY.state and local tax deductions. Fuck these other bullshit states that are pointing fingers at NY and saying we aren't well run, when they happily take our tax revenues and try to cut our representation (which is already lower proportionally to these smaller states).
I'd go another way - I'd say she cares about her constituents and what they want her to represent. Way too many in congress get elected by a district then go and represent the national party instead of fighting for those they are actually representing. Now I'm sure a lot does align as far as interests but she comes from a place of the personal effects her district faces and in many cases, yes it aligns with a national majority as well.
Completely irrelevant trivia: Jim Morrison's dad was the commander of the US naval forces in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Gulf of Tonkin incident.
Their position is that her "free speech" being infringed on I'm sure the Hatch Act, a piece of legislation enacted in response to Democrats in New Mexico committing pernicious political activities, a law that has stood up for the last 80 years, is an unconstitutional infringement upon the first amendment. Give me a fuckin break.
He doesn't deserve a reply but I just want to stan for Warren for a second on this issue: https://elizabethwarren.com/issues#rebuild-the-middle-class https://www.barrons.com/articles/millionaires-like-elizabeth-warrens-wealth-tax-51560368747
This metaphor keeps popping up in my head about our current situation. When I drive down the road in my dangerous automobile made from a ton of metal, surrounded by others in dangerous automobiles made from a ton of metal, I have to assume that those around me will follow the rules of the road. Of course, I keep an eye out for those driving a bit fast or aggressively, and give them some space so that I don't get caught up in any potential accident. This administration unashamedly shedding all of the rules of engagement is a giant tank driving the wrong direction on the freeway shooting the tank's gun turret indiscriminately. Meanwhile, Schumer and Pelosi and Biden are crammed into a smart car watching the tank barrel toward them saying, surely they will begin to obey the rules if we toot this little horn.
Actually, developing countries/banana republics allow Presidents and former presidents to get away with breaking the laws, this is something that continues to happen in this country.
I made it through his full Dave Rubin interview. I really want to give him a shot, but there were a few times where him and Dave were just too chummy talking about "identity politics." He seemed ocassionallly willing to go with Dave's narrative that the "leftists are ruining everything" while not outright saying it. He's gonna have to decide whether acquiring possible Trump voters is worth the risk of losing whatever semblance of democratic/progressive base he may or may not have ...
