Got the hypervolt and it's like the best massage I've ever had but my arm soreness is still at amazing levels. Back and legs are great and what I care about the most but frustrating.

Bought a 100# medicine ball today because I definitely need a 100# medicine ball. Have a bit of an addiction to buying stuff right now.

I have a few items I feel like I wasted money on but for the most part, fucking love that most the things I've bought have helped make me better.

I don't even think twice about buying shit at this point.

I gave the gift of gains this week, gents. My buddy had to make some budgeting decisions and decided to drop the gym and start a home gym. Gave him a beater bar I barely used, some old 35 plates and some homemade sandbags. Another home gym starts from humble beginnings.

What are some of your goals? Get stronger or just put on muscle? Any injuries to work around?

I mostly just want to look better. I was 340 this time last year and ~250 today. Theres probably 40 pounds of fat left to lose and just dieting isnt quite working anymore. Also, it would be great to have as much muscle mass as possible to counter the excess skin issue im sure to have at some point, at least in my arms. Being able to jump more than 8 inches would also be neat, but my knees are and always have been complete ass.

Multiple ways you can start. First off, that's some impressive work to lose that weight and keep it off. Have you had any sort of exercise mixed in the past year? Do you have lingering knee that still cause problems? I'd start simple with stuff you can do at home, air squats (if your knees allow) and push ups and get out and go for walks to mix in cardio. If and when you start lifting weights, most people in here (myself included) will suggest mixing in the main compound lifts to build strength and then you can do some other lighter work too. My main suggestion would be to start slow, especially if you haven't ever done much exercising

I dont know what the problem with my knees is. It started in middle school whem i grew about a foot in a year. Im technically at risk for marfan syndrome (my sister has it) but i have no intention of ever having that test done. Cardiologists have told me my heart looks normal, rheumatologists have told me theres a good chance i have it. So who knows. Not me and its going to stay that way.

I can do body weight squats, but doing much more has always been a problem. Lunges have also always been a problem.

Outside of doing some HIIT on a bike that i could never really commit to ive basically done nothing since soph year of high school. But now im to the point that id very much like to look a certain way so its time that comes to an end.

Negative result? I keep doing what im doing
There would be no change in how i choose to live my life therefore i dont need to know.

Go see a Physical Therapist and tell them exactly what you told us. They can screen how you move and recommend appropriate weight training exercises. Arthritis and other degenerative conditions that you probably have from carrying around the extra weight won’t change if you get x-rays. There’s too many variables to really recommend what you should do. Resistance training is great, but given you history, I would think you should seek advice from someone that didn’t take a weekend personal training course at Planet Fitness. (I’m a PT)

I think you mention that you may have health risks and then people tend to shy away from giving advice. Maybe go get a trainer to help you get started.

I see patients all the time that it isn’t a pain issue but they are trying to get back into exercise and our goals are more performance based, just as you described. It sounds like you want to start doing this regardless of pain, so they should be still able help you figure out things that can limit impact on affected joints. I see them for 4-6 visits at our gym and give them programming to continue on their own that isn’t rehab exercises; they are work-outs.

No offense to anyone in this thread (tons of knowledge shared) but I mean if actual medical professionals aren’t able to help, it seems like a stretch to ask a message board. There are real implications with major weight loss that should be considered with future exercise that people like PT’s are trained in.

So I would say with knee problems try to start with a leg press and build some leg strength that way. Like tjosu said, focusing on compound lifts (barbell bench, squats/leg press, over head press, deadlifts, rows, pulldowns) are going to be where you need to be focusing on. Try to build strength there in different rep ranges 5-15. Just make form a major focus. Ask as many questions as you need

Long day of events in Florida heat probably isn't great for a late 30s 450 pound man.

Saw Martins beating him h2h on a deadlift hold wearing a sombrero. He's a funny dude and his overheard pressing technique is perfect. Makes up for a bit less strength with great technique and flexibility.

Yes, i understand that, but ultimately its my life and my body so i will do with them what i want.

I do know its something auto immune because of how corticosteroids make me feel. I have no interest in treating it with those because my father did, he got cushings, and died from complications with that.

Frankly my entire body hurts constantly and has for well over a decade. Ive seen countless specialists and none can explain it. Despite the pain, ive never felt limited physically. At this point i just dont care what it is because it doesnt impact my life outside of the pain, which ive grown used to. Ive never been hospitalized for anything at all. I dont have health problems outside of the pain. So i just honestly dont see any major risks with me starting to lift.

If you needed to be told that leg pressing was a great exercise to build leg strength in sets of 10, go to any gym that has a machine area, find the 8-10 leg machines, set a weight that is moderately difficult and rip out a few sets of 10. It’s an easy way to build LE strength as you continue into the compound lifts.

Forgot my belt at home so decided I would do other stuff first then deadlift later. Hour and a half workout, hour break, then deadlifting was pretty fucking rough. Got it done though so happy.

Got some nice bloody calves from some BB hack squats today

i've started having an interesting popping feeling in my wrist when i'm doing push/strict press. when lowering the bar it pops a bit when the bar gets back to around chin level, not really feeling pain, but it's new and making me sweat a bit more during push press

I bought some inzer wrist wraps when mine were giving me some issues. They do the trick but I don’t always wear them. I only use them if my wrists are feeling off on my first few sets. If they’re fine then I don’t put them on. I don’t do barbell bench anymore though, only high rep incline bench if at all

I have some type of nerve....issue? In my right hand. Occasionally it flares up and it hurts to squeeze something so benching/squatting is a pain. It’s really acute in nature so instead of fixing it I just wrap my wrist wraps extra tight and get on with it

i got some wraps a few months ago. i was beginning to question whether i am too dependent on the wraps for pressing now and got sloppy on wrist position the last month. it kinda feels like knuckles popping, no sound.

will monitor and probably eventually ignore like most of the noises my body makes.

I’ve been going to a rehab masseuse since I tore everything all up just to stay loose and she re-sets my wrists every time I go. It may be an option and has really helped me.

Been contemplating seeing a doctor to see if I have bicep tendonitis but had a nice chest/shoulders session today. Happy with how it went but was happy with last time and had a solid 4-5 days of soreness. Hoping more stretching, recovery afterwards can fix the problem; we'll see.

Guessing around 390, which is depressing to write. I'm going to ramp up the heavy sets in the next month to see where I'm at for sure.
