I’ve met mike a few times. He is one of the nicest guys I’ve ever encountered. Kind of person who it’s clear he genuinely cares about getting to know you.

Also, bananas on boats are a huge superstition in Tampa. I’m sure everywhere has their own story, but Tampa guides have good fun with it

Tons of weird fishing traditions and superstitions. First tuna? Gotta eat the heart

First billfish? Gotta get in the water with it and get “baptized”

Been on the streams since five with a strong cranefly hatch going on, lots of 14 inch browns

Morning coffee is leading to a surefire episode of diarrhea and the nearest gas station is 40 minutes away

    What do I do

Back to the Chauga. Had an excellent day of dry fly fishing. Trout were surface feeding left and right. Landed around 20, had a few get off, and tons of strikes. Had pan fried trout for lunch.

Caught 8 within the first 30 minutes at this spot without moving where I was standing.

Caught another 5-6 at the tail end of these rapids

Went 40 miles out to a private reef yesterday to go red snapper fishing, and limited out (7 people, so 14 snapper) in a little over an hour. Biggest snapper was 22 pounds.

I also caught a huge triggerfish that weighed around 11 pounds. Current state record is 13.5 pounds. Unfortunately, its not triggerfish season so we had to throw it back.

Friday I fished Blackwell Bridge and the last two days I was at Hellhole. Usually Hellhole is too crowded for my taste, but it wasn't too bad this weekend. Plus I was fishing before 7 so people didn't show up until after 8.

I don't have waders, so that's a little too cold for me. I've fished every spot on the Chauga, but didn't feel like hiking in so I went to the non-campsite ones.

An artificial reef paid for by rich people. Private owners pay a company to build/buy a pre-constructed reef, the company takes it out to a location in the gulf, drops the structure in the water, and then gives the lat/long coordinates to the buyer. After a few years, fish congregate around the structure and it makes for good fishing. The private ones I've seen are mostly triangular structures built with metal and concrete.

In contrast, there are public reefs made from purposefully sunken ships, old bridge rubble, cargo containers, etc. whose lat/long coordinates are published in various places.

So the public can't use it or are they so remote that the public won't find it?

It’s just an unpublished number. Joe public can fish it if he finds it, but chances are slim.

They can if they are aware of the coordinates. They are "private" because only a couple of people know the coordinates.

On Saturday, we had 4 fish on at once and a boat drive by (keep in mind we're 40 miles out, so not a lot of boats around). The boat stopped and hung out for a while. We're pretty sure they were marking the spot so they could come back later to find the reef.

Kept fishing. I suggested we moon them, another guy suggested we shoot flares at them, and another wanted to drive by and throw beer bottles at them.

Just removed all the sound. I had my bluetooth speaker playing and i guess youtube didnt like that.

Which kinda sucks bc now you cant hear the drag peel or my cussing, or me calling the fish a flounder then a shark and then a big red.

I also need to mound the camera on my head instead of chest

Bought the H3 F 8wt from Orvis during the donation sale. My $50 all in one kit Shakespeare rod was well worth parting with. H3 is amazing, lightweight and accurate. Shoots like a rifle and the sound through the rings is music. Caught a personal best 15' striper my first kayak trip with it.

Anyone else make their own leaders? Weight and length?

Instead of maintaining a tight loop, sometimes my heavy flies or streamers seem to get out and lead instead of unfolding, it's like they're shot out of a cannon forward and just drop. Fly hits the water first, then my line follows not fully extended. There is nothing like a great fly cast where you feel the load, the line shoots forward and whistles out of the guides, and the tippent end reaches out and then slowly turns over for a gently fall with all your available line out. Only thing better is an immediate bit.

I work constantly on my pause to load as that's my typical trouble in my cast. I'm trying to dial in lengths and leader/tippet weights to better manage throwing bigger flies. Then I get out in the backyard with just a tuft of yarn and I have the best loops and drops at 30-40-50 feet. Are these clousers and boogle bugs really that heavy I keep asking myself.

First weekend off fishing in about a month, was nice to sleep in but I'm looking forward to some wading adventures this week.
