remember when they were all accused of rape and then broke up and then quietly got back together and released an album and everyone forgot that they were all accused of rape
I feel like theyve always been pretty consistent with their sound/quality, but I am really enjoying the new hot chip album. this track might be one of my favorite things theyve ever done
One woman described Cuomo allegedly taking her virginity in the band’s tour van: “I was 17 at the time and the night I hooked up with him, he didn’t have a condom so we ended up doing anal.” While she says the experience was consensual, she emphasized that she was young and starstruck. “[Cuomo] didn’t ask me, he just kind of did it,” she wrote. Another woman claims Cuomo forcibly kissed her and stuck his hand down her shorts during a show in spring 2014 when she was a junior in high school; yet another claims Grant Brinner assaulted her in the backseat of The Orwells’ tour van while she was blackout drunk in fall 2014, referring to it as an act of “dirty manipulation.” “When I was a freshman in college I was raped by Henry Brinner,” Toyota-O’Brien’s account begins. She alleges that after a drunken night out together, Brinner, whom she was casually dating, invited her back to his hotel room. “I vividly remember stating that if I were to go home with him that I did not want to have sex. I clearly said ‘no,’” she wrote.
the music industry is astonishingly behind the times when it comes to facing toxic masculinity. There have been tons of potential #metoo moments but nobody has really faced any consequences
For sure. Drugs, alcohol, party, and you see dumb dipshit kids with all the excuses they need to be shitty. Hope people at least keep drawing awareness to it.
Just from what I know and have been exposed to, most record label heads, promoters/talent acquisition folks, producers, etc have largely always been men. And regardless of the field (politics, business, music, education, etc) you're gonna have men who abuse the power they have over others But in music, it seems women are underrepresented to an even larger degree than most fields. And the environments in which so much of the musical world takes place is filled with, as you said drugs/alcohol/non-stop travel and partying. That creates countless situations where there might not have necessarily been a violent assault, but where it was impossible for someone to have legally consented to whatever they were subjected to by someone who had some degree of power or influence over them. And women have for years just kind of had to put up with that because the environments weren't changing and men have continually been empowered to and even expected to act in such ways. Hopefully there is meaningful change across all musical landscapes Great Jones Street by Don DeLillo is a must read for this thread if you like elite literature
I mean shit the Rolling Stones have a song about banging an 11 year old. It has been this way for years. Some cool groups fighting for more inclusive environments are Girls Rock and also Seraphine Collective locally here in Detroit (think I've posted about the latter here before). Both are more than worthy of your attention and support. I just made a donation to the local chapter of Girls Rock. I encourage anyone who can to find a way to make rock and roll a safer place for everyone today.
new Oh Sees album out August 16th. It'll be called Face Stabber oh yesssssss New song is called Henchlock Spoiler
wait according to their bandcamp they've already released 3 albums this year? interested to see if they can pull this 20 minute song off, solid start to it
yeaahhhhh this middle section's really dragging, kind of like their attempt at that 10 minute song on the last album, if this sound's indicative of the album as a whole though it'll be my jam
Has anyone been to a show at Orange Peel's "outdoor summer stage" in Asheville? Just noticed my tix for Lord Huron aren't at the regular club
Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster of Water Liars and Marie/Lepanto has a new solo record in August. Here's the first single: Take Heart, Take Care Spoiler
Got into Geowulf recently after hearing their top hit, Saltwater Reminds me a lot of the band Cults, who are one of my favorites Saltwater Spoiler Sunday Spoiler Won't Look Back Spoiler
I know no one cares about Silversun Pickups but here's my review of the new album: Pretty boring. They're using synths too much and not enough of the pure distorted guitar sound that made me like them
if you like Blanck Mass I think you would like this one. Sacred Bones is amazing Uniform & The Body - Penance Spoiler
Colleen Green apparently gonna be recording a new album this month per an interview I read today I really really love her music and she's hilarious. She had Casey Weissbuch on tour with her right after he left Diarrhea Planet a few years ago and speaking of Casey Weissbuch, his contributions are pretty legendary IMO: Diarrhea Planet, JEFF the Brotherhood, Colleen Green, Daddy Issues, Mitski, Bully, Soccer Mommy, Rozwell Kid, and Vagabon that I know of. Amazing for a dude who is several years younger than me
Haven't listened to Wand yet but they are playing at a really cool rooftop bar venue in Brooklyn on Friday. Worth checking out? Other option is a band called Froth tomorrow at the same venue.
His voice is exactly like Thom Yorke. Apparently that's been more of a recent thing though and their older stuff sounded less identical to Radiohead
I've come to the conclusion that Smote Reverser's Oh Sees' best and most complete album to date, which is pretty cool considering the veritable smorgasbord of albums they'd already released. Still want to punch them in the dick for all the name changes though. Go America go
Easily one of my favorite albums of the year so far, doesn't exactly fit with most of the stuff in here but I consider this thread to be a catch all so not sure why I haven't posted about them yet. Has kind of an underlying stoner rock sound but with energetic punk/pop tendencies mixed in, making for really fun listen overall.
I enjoyed this. Will have to check out the album. Any other artists in this same vein you can recommend?
