This is exactly what made me hate the new one. I'm perfectly okay with remaking them, but don't just slap the ghostbuster name on them and then have it be nothing but slapstick toilet humor.
catching up itt kind of curious about a sequel 35 years later in the OG Ghostbusters universe. They talked about it for years but with no Ramis and possibly no Moranis, I'm kinda skeptical the Wiig Ghostbusters movie was pretty meh. I don't care for Melissa McCarthy or Leslie Jones so I def had some preconceived biases going into it. Hemsworth was solid...the rest, not so much Ocean's 8 was pretty forgettable, whatevs
McKinnon and Wiig could have potentially hung with the delivery/performances of the original cast but they chose to make them more boring traditional comedy archetypes. I wonder if it was just laziness but it was probably the studio meddling to play it safe and inevitably ruin the potential success of the movie. This new one will come down to the same potential issue.
I think there’s one joke from the new ghostbusters that encapsulates the whole film. Hemsworth as a himbo trying to look smart wears glasses frames without lenses. This is revealed by him scratching his eye through the area where the lens should be. It was a subtle (mildly) funny joke. They stepped on it by having one of the main characters point out what had happened to the audience.
Fucking Bingo a lot of what made the first GB so good was all the subtle, nuanced humor ranging from Venkman slapping the calculator out of Egon's hands, the Twinkie reward, or even brilliant throw-away lines like.. "I’ve worked in the private sector — they expect results." "Listen! You smell something?" and damn near everything Moranis does/says is gold "Everybody, this is Ted and Annette Fleming! Ted has a small carpet cleaning business in receivership; Annette's drawing a salary from a deferred bonus from two years ago. They got 15 thousand left on the house at 8 percent, so they're OK! So does anybody wanna play Parcheesi?"
So many Moranis lines. "Who brought the dog"? "Who are you guys? We're the Ghostbusters. Who does your taxes"? "Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you"
"I feel great! Just ordered some more vitamins and stuff. I was just exercising. I taped a 20-minute workout and played it back at high speed on my machine so it only took ten minutes. I got a great workout."
The thing that shut down any hopes of a 3rd with the original cast was that Murray refused to even read any scripts for the third because he didn’t want to be in it. So I doubt he’d join in one now And I’ll pretend I never saw his role in this last one
His beefy weightlifter stance/walk in the hall when stalking Dana in his track suit kills me every time. "I'm gonna have a shower, Dana".
The line in Ghostbusters 2 that smokes me every time is when Janosz is freaking out at Pete being close to the painting, Pete smuggly responds with, “well you’re not gonna get a green card with that kinda attitude, pal. Mmkay?”
When you think about it, OG GB had so much comedic brilliance for a action/sci-fi/adventure flick. Murray, Ramis, Aykroyd, Moranis, Reitman...just insane
Did you know when Akroyd wrote the original script it was written for him, Belushi and Eddie Murphy. Belushi died while he was writing it.
great show. Can’t wait for more. Die Hard one was awesome too. Amazing how Bruce Willis became the highest paid actor by default and luck when he really wasn’t a movie star yet.
Binged that and Toys That Made Us yesterday since it was cold and raining and my son is sick with an ear infection so it was a perfect day to just sit and watch TV. Amazing how close so much of that stuff came to not happening.
Totally agree with this, and your example is the same one I use whenever I criticize the film. I didn't think it was terrible, but it was remarkably unfunny for how much talent was involved. It felt like it was put through a cocktail of test audiences and the final product ended up hopelessly sanitized. The film did everything short of propping up signposts directing the audience on when to laugh.
I mean should have at least had a quick clip of Murray, Hudson and Dan. Get us fired up. will watch though and excited
I love that it isn't a reboot and tries to create a completely different storyline within the Ghostbusters realm.
