If you're not listening to Historium and you like cool things, you should be. Awesome history podcast that rarely if ever goes longer than 25 mins. Every story he goes into, I end up researching or hoping a movie would be made about it

Started a podcast called The Pirate History Podcast and he's pretty good -- it's clear he tries to emulate Carlin. That said, I'm halfway through with episode 4 and he has not spoken about pirates AT ALL, because he's trying to give us a glimpse of the environment they were in and he claims it's the best way to get a full understanding of them. Idk, but he 100% did not need all of this bullshit. To me, it feels like he's trying to explain the war on terror by starting with the declaration of independence and George Washington.

I like him, so I'll keep listening, but I'll be damned if I'm not frustrated with the first 4 episodes.

Tried another episode of Cold. Still no evidence of anything and another member of the accuseds family committed suicide under the pressure of the cops, church and media. I really hope they were actually guilty, despite no evidence, otherwise the above 3 groups have (more) blood on their hands.

Agreed. It should have been condensed/shortened. Much better podcasts out right now.

*Also, the 2 episode tv show about that specific case I posted about in the other thread was way more entertaining. Name of it escapes me right now.

I actually enjoyed cold quite a bit, but I didn’t know anything about the case at all before and I honestly think that helped, it’s a fascinating look into a weird culture and an insane persons psyche from their direct perspective imo.

Certainly that's what the podcaster believes. Just never managed to find any evidence, ever, so resorts to the these scenes that make it sound like he found something. Nope just another swing and a miss. "He poisoned his wife we know cuz she had a stomach ache." Blood analysis = nope. We know he put the body in a cave. Looked in a bunch of caves and found nothing. Cadaver dogs hit on a positive. Dig but don't find anything. Over and over they don't find anything. Only thing that is 100% sure is that this family has lots of emotional issues. Cops/media/wife's family continued to put pressure beyond that which the legal system seemed willing to do. Eventually leading to two suicides and the murder of the two children. Literally the entirety of the evidence against him was the decision to go snow camping, on the work night when his wife went missing and finding her phone in the dash. Strong circumstantial evidence but then there is nothing more ever.

Very interesting, except we all know what’s going to happen when SCOTUS makes their decision. Doing what’s right and doing what’s practical are in conflict here, and practicality will win out.

I'm no more convinced than I was after whichever episode she went missing and he went camping. If anything I'm less convinced than I was at that point. Since the initial situation which definitely looked like he did it he has somehow become a master criminal. I mean he would have been dumb enough to kill her on a timeline that was so bad for him that he really should have been arrested initially. How is someone that incompetent all of a sudden able to foil literally everybody in law enforcement for years? Another option is that he wasn't dumb but it was a crime of passion and that's why the timing looked so incriminating. Then once again we're back to a crime of passion often being a messy affair.

I would say, with the highly limited, extremely biased, information in the podcast I'd say he most likely did it. But, there are definitely more holes in the podcaster's narrative than I can easily count. I suspect that, if another podcaster, with the reverse bias, was to take the story he would be able to get me beyond a reasonable doubt. Assuming no new info. Apparently, the DA`s agreed as they never charged him. Never even arrested him. The only thing they were ever able to prove is that he had "incest porn" on his computer. But because they didn't go further I don't even know if that means anything. Like is it mom adult daughter or twin sisters? If watching that should get your kids taken away then I don't think to many people on this board would have families anymore.

So basically I guess he probably did it but that podcast showed basically nothing other than "he was weird" and "he hated the church."

Listened to Behind the Bastards for the first time last night. Great concept, exhaustive research, but one of the most painful things I've ever listened to in my life. It's unfunny people who don't realize they're not funny trying to be funny.

I'm interested in learning the topic, so 20 minutes into my first episode I started skipping 30 seconds to a minute ahead each time he went off script to save myself the absolutely fucking excruciating banter.

Really, I can't explain enough how painfully bad Robert and his co-hosts' banter is. It's an audible crucifixion.

I won’t say I’ve never given up on a podcast covering a specific story, but I’d say it’s rare. I feel a compulsion to finish hearing a story even when I’m not enamored with the podcast.

With that preface in mind, I forced myself to finish listening to The Ballad of Billy Balls. I tend to like the Crimetown crew, and so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. But goddamn it this wasn’t a bit like To Live and Die in LA from the perspective that it was so difficult to give a shit about any of the people involved. Listening to the hostess’ mom and her manner of speaking, in particular, made my ears bleed. Do not recommend.

    Fuck Clarence Thomas.

In his dissent, Thomas said "any competent prosecutor would have exercised the same strikes as the state did in this trial." He added, "Although the court's opinion might boost its self-esteem, it also needlessly prolongs the suffering of four victims' families."

"If the court's opinion today has a redeeming quality, it is this: The state is perfectly free to convict Curtis Flowers again. Otherwise, the opinion distorts our legal standards, ignores the record, and reflects utter disrespect for the careful analysis of the Mississippi courts."

The last story with the dad from Australia. I can remember listening to the annual finale episode on a long drive. That dad has really gone through a lot of pain with his son dying. I also think with the digital age/social media that we all will have that kind of day in the future.

I've been listening to a series called History of the Civil War in 10 Battles by the History Unplugged podcast. I'm not like a hardcore civil war history guy beyond the Ken Burns documentary, so it might not do much for you if you are, but I've enjoyed it so far. I'm like 6 episodes deep out of ~22 and they run about an hour on average

The quality of a BtB episode can really hinge on who the guests are. You can tell some of them are really out of their depth when it comes to talking about concrete sociology/politics topics with Robert, so they just resort to off-topic jokes and asides in an effort to contribute. That's perfectly fine with me because Robert is such a great host and very insightful.
