Babcock losing more and more of his guys. It’s not a bad thing for the Leafs but Babs is so stubborn, Dubas is going to have to fire him.
Babs seems like a guy that was a great coach in the old NHL, but has struggled/refused to adapt to the new NHL. Example: Toronto's power play. The old NHL power play setup was to split up your best offensive players and give both units a similar amount of power play time. The new NHL setup is to stack your first unit with all your best offensive players so you can give them a disproportionate amount of PP time. Babcock's assistants have set up the units so the first is stacked, but the first unit is still only getting 2:30 of time per game compared to 1:30 for the 2nd unit. It doesn't make any sense to load up your first unit if the time is still going to be that close. Contrast that to a team like Winnipeg, where their stacked first unit got 3:30 last year compared to < 1:30 for the 2nd unit.
I like this for Colorado. Kadri is good, get him away from the GTA media nonsense and bet they will get at least the 55-point version; signed for 3 seasons at a very nice AAV. Nice second line of Burakovsky-Kadri-Jost. Sakic had no intentions of re-signing Barrie. Allows Makar-Byram to move higher up the ranks. Bet he wouldve preferred a RHD. But he got a decent pick for the salary retention, that he can use at the trade deadline.
Thomas Chabot is hoping this attitude rings true next summer. He’s going to get an offer sheet no doubt.
Need to lock him up for 7 years at $7M-$7.5M/year as it'll be a really good contract as the cap keeps going up each year.
I believe it because Lou has egg on his face yet again and he has 12.5 mil burning a hole in his pocket. Plus, they have a decent enough prospect pool to convince themselves that giving up four firsts isn’t stupid. Lastly, he personally knows the player so he can justify the move by saying he has no concerns about giving Mitch that kind of money.
Marner isn't worth 4 1sts as he needs to play a premium position (C or D) for it to be warranted in my opinion.
Depends on where those 4 firsts are. I’d say 4 picks between 25-31 are worth less than the 2nd overall which was a no brainer to use on a wing
If it was 4 late firsts at a normal cap hit I would say it was worth it. Marner for 4 firsts at McDavid money- no thanks.
Also the Islanders have 10 million in cap space, next to nothing opening up after next year, Barzal coming off his ELC, and Toews and Pulock both needing raises. (Plus Beauvillier now) That would be such a clusterfuck trying to free up that much cap space that quickly.
A team that vastly overperformed based on unsustainable goaltending that they didn’t even re-sign because they know it is unsustainable is going to pay Marner 12.5 million and give up 4 firsts. Wtf are they thinking.
I’m okay with the mayhem it was cause Spoiler Unless they try and do it to my team with Brayden point
Aho and point share the same agent so I assume they kicked the tires on point already and were told don’t waste your time. I don’t think he will accept an offer sheet but it would be fairly easy to sign a player of his caliber to a contract that we simply couldn’t match if the player wanted to maximize money.
The Leafs could package those 1sts to more help on D and more goal scorers. Their current D corp beyond this season doesn't look good and I think Sandin is their only legit D prospect. Liljegren looks to need more development time and he's a year older than Sandin.
Or turn around and offer sheet a Connor/Konecny type winger and use the saved money to resign Barrie next year and add 2 firsts.
They need D help more than anything. Depending on Barrie's year he could be anywhere from $7M-$9.5M/year on his next contract.
Boeser was never going to sign anything longer than five years. Maybe if Vancouver offered 7x10 he would, but otherwise why sign a deal that is just going to make you underpaid years 5-7?
I was speaking from a Canucks perspective not Boeser's. He would become a UFA earlier is the only reason he'd do a 6-7 contract.
4 years still doesn't get him to UFA when it's up, right? Would imagine if he likes it in Vancouver both parties would be happy with that.
If the Islanders sign Marner and the Leafs don't match I would love to trade Trouba for the Islanders 2020 1st round pick.
