I have a hard time too...from keeping my car from running off the road because I’m guffawing all over the place!
Planet Money and This American Life were two of the pods that got me listening to podcasts. Planet Money is still really good but I feel like This American Life went downhill after Alex left. It’s part that and part Trump Brain, but I feel like a lot of the Gimlet pods are NPR-inspired but without a lot of the constraints of public radio.
I stilll like TAL but prefer Radiolab anymore as far as public radio goes. Even with preferring Ira Glass.
Still listening to this and it's still good. My favorite thing I've learned so far is that McClellan's army delayed an attack on a much smaller Confederate force partly because the Confederates painted a bunch of logs black and set them up to look like cannons and he fell for it
I like the podcast but sometimes his choice in guests is not great. The Mark Zuckerberg one immediately comes to mind. I only made it about 2/3 through the first episode because the two women were basically just making fun of Zuckerberg for being a weird mega nerd in college
And it’s really impossible to predict which one it will be. They used to be really good at turning ordinary stories into extraordinary ones but instead lately it’s just been kind of self indulgent and over dramatic. Same with The Moth.
I started the one on King Leopold looking for some history talk, and his guest (Andrew Ti) wasn't really prepared. Mindless chatter. I've heard good things, so I'll try some others.
Started the It Could Happen Here pod with Robert Evans. I tend to think the whole idea behind the thing is pretty outlandish but it's an interesting pod 2 eps in, to be sure.
Just as a heads up, the guests having no clue ahead of time who they will be discussing is part of the conceit of the show.
I’ve been using the free 2-month trial through the Ringer. I don’t see myself paying for it once it runs out.
Disappointed that I decided to listen to my first History Unplugged episode and it seemed to be an hour of “Nathan Bedford Forrest wasn't as bad as everyone thinks” - I unsubscribed 20 minutes into the episode.
OPB's Bundyville has been pretty good It's like an overview of those wackos who occupied that BLM building in Southern Oregon and earlier had a big standoff with BLM at a ranch in Nevada
Who has erectile dysfunction and hates going to the post office. Spoiler Locked On Braves and Timesuck both started up with boner pill ads.
Just ran through the Running from Cops podcast over the past couple of days. What a shitty show and all parties involved suck massively.
Homocide 100%. But then again, I always find myself getting sucked in to whatever view the creators lead you to believe in these things (i.e. Believing Adnan and Steve Avery both being innocent).
and you also don't get to see the people involved. These people are morons (typically). The type of idiots that would check to see if their recently deceased friend had money on him or even steal his cell phone. However, I agree with you - not suicide.
Listened to the BtB for Charles Koch. Very good pod and will subscribe. What are some of the best ones?
Assad Gary Young The Sackler Family Oswald Mosley (a father of facism, big fan of this pod for historical context to 2019) Andrew Wakefield
They’re all pretty good. The last one about the bleach enemas curing autism is bananas land. Everyone and a while there’s one that falls flat for me , but more time than not - it’s really good Recently the Edward Bernays one was pretty meh
I always thought people telling each other to drink bleach was an internet burn but really people actually do that
I frequently say I'm going to drink bleach after *team I like* loses or *team I hate* wins. Now I know there's drinkin' bleach and I can even take it as an enema if I want as well. My world view has been shifted.
Didn’t learn a whole lot from the latest episode of Culpable, but god damn it just keeps getting more and more puzzling how nobody thought to keep digging.
I'm trying to wait for it to be over before listening so I can binge it. I hate having to wait for new episodes on stuff like that. Any idea how many episodes it's supposed to be?
