I listened to the post game after Zimmerman’s last start and you could only hear Grady speak so highly on how his pitches were and that he’s turned the corner. Yikes man
It says Avila, and Tigers suck. And they overpaid for the Cuban. They were saying on pregame show that Zimmermann was back, and they were hoping he was going to build on a couple strong starts.
Some of that might be true, but it's also the nature of how the game is played in Latin America. None of these 15 and 16 year olds are running around playing AAU-like competition every day before they sign. That's not how it works. They commit to a team at 13-14 years old and pretty much just hang out at those complexes. The Tigers clearly promised this kid not long after he came over and have been sitting on him for several years now. What that means for his future, I have no clue. But the fact he didn't go to a couple showcases so Fangraphs could see him means nothing to me either way. The reality is that the system is fucked up and guys are promised at an extremely early age. It's ridiculous from an evaluation standpoint, but that's just how it is. I have no clue if they're right or wrong about the guy, but some of these takes are just pointless to me. Clearly, the Tigers believe in the talent. I don't have a ton of confidence in that, but I don't have much confidence in anything they do at this point. None of us do.
That by keeping the status quo for baseball, they can keep their attention on the hockey team they care more about
Fuck Cabrera. That pitch was a fucking strike. And Gardenhire ejected again too lol Edit. Looks like just Cabrera got ejected
Really good fastball. Probably not much else. Likely reliever. But he's much further along than anyone could have possibly expected at this stage.
Great fucking week smeegsgreen . 1-5 can’t complain. I think Baltimore won 3 times, and the Royals twice
Picking 2nd in draft and 3 games behind O’s but they are only 1 win behind us. Of course we played like 3 games less than most of the league.
Can’t agree with you on this guy because he’s an idiot. Not sure how this matters and it doesn’t have context. Why the fuck would anybody pick up a player that was DFA’d on the worst team in the league? If he couldn’t make it here why/how is he going to get picked on a team that’s better?
True. I guess it just shows you how pathetic our 40 man roster is. It probably has like 10 guys worth keeping, and that’s being generous.
I actually kind of buy that in terms of him "leading" as a hitter. What he doesn't get and never will is "leaders" don't run away after the game and leave their shittier teammates to talk to the media. Or just completely walk away from anything they don't want to do.
So we can trade Jimenez to the Rays on the cheap and watch him become unhittable, or keep him watch him continue to be hit. Sounds about right.
three years ago this guy was the #11 overall prospect in baseball. Unbelievable that they wouldn't take a flyer on him. But guess they need space on the 40 man for when the next Austin Adams comes around
also apparently they turned down an Astros' offer based around Derek Fisher for Castellanos last summer
Anyone who ranked AJ Reed as the #11 overall prospect was bad at their job. He was always considered a mature college hitter who would crush the low minors and struggle more and more the higher he got up the ladder by the people I read. He might end up being a decent platoon DH/1B bat for a little while, but this is not a potential star and he never was.
11 was probably pretty high but everyone had him as a mid-top 100 prospect. Even as his stock has dropped, he's still hit 34 and 28 home runs with an .OBP over .340 at AAA the past two years. May not be a superstar but his offensive production still projects better than pretty much anyone the Tigers have close to the majors at this point. Just doesn't make sense why they wouldn't take a flier on him. I believe part of that HR total is because he plays in an extremely hitter friendly home park and league. I think he was worth a flier for this org. I probably would have tried it out and seen what he's got. I don't think we're missing a ton, though.
it was in an Anthony Fenech article last week. He said they may circle back around to it since both players are having down season.
Gotcha. I was thinking of Kyle Tucker for some reason. Not crazy about Fisher, but for Castellanos, that’s a good catch.
the lineup features a split of Brandon Dixon and John Hicks at 1st, they aren't really in the position to pass on any former top prospect with even a semblance of a pulse passing on Tucker would have been insane. But passing on Fisher tells us that Avila's asking prices are way too high and not to expect much if anything at all this summer
One of our minor league teams threw a no-hitter today. Another of them got no-hit today. It was the same game. https://www.milb.com/gameday/gcl-ti...nal,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=589294
When we suck ass in 3 years the excuse will be because Mize was hurt. Illitch will give Avila another extension
