Any plan to stop selling to consumers has to be 15+ years off. Him even thinking about it now is so dumb.
You realize you can put stips in a sales contract, right? "I'll sell this to you but you can't use it as a robo taxi. If you do, I'll turn your shit off." I just solved your problem and now Tesla can sell to Jim in Montana.
Again why? They make like 10k on a model 3 as it is. An electric car in this service could hypothetically make 100k a year. They would build cars only for themselves going forward. Someone else can handle the car sales to Jim in Montana.
Is there a cap on how many they can make? Once they have enough cars for those cities, then what? Just shut down the plants they worked so hard to build? Only make a enough to fill replace old cars as they die? $10k is $10k. They won't just pass on making $10k per unit.
Why sell a product that circumvents your main business. You’d want fewer personal cars so people would have to go through your service.
There will be 90%+ of the country's land that won't be serviced by their service. I get not selling one to a guy in NYC. Not selling one to someone in Birmingham would make absolutely no sense.
So if there aren’t enough cars in Birmingham why wouldn’t you take the car you are selling to joe blow in Birmingham and put it there for your own service. If Tesla is the first to solve FSD giving a fuck about selling to joe blow in a tiny town in Iowa will not be on their priority list. Someone else can do that. The new priority would be expanding to every city in the world that has over 100k citizens.
And it takes 30 minutes or longer for one to show up in rural areas. They aren't sitting at the end of your road waiting on you to call.
I had a friend that did this when he lived in Atlanta. Thought it was crazy at first but at the time Lyft and Uber were competing and he was getting rides to work for under $5 and spent way less than he would have on a car. His gf had a car so was really no point in them having two cars.
Elon has big dreams. We need more people like him. I get the knock because it’s unrealistic but I admire that about Elon.
It'll be interesting to see if he's eventually viewed as a Steve Jobs type that drove innovation and was very hard to work with or he'll flame out
fell 200 deliveries short so no bonus for you! https://electrek.co/2019/07/10/tesla-employees-bonuses-record-quarter/
Good read, but I don't know what the writer is talking about here: "It’s easy to discern why EV sales are so anemic. For one thing, electric vehicles are overwhelmingly sedans (true), which have not been a consumer favorite for years. Moreover, most EVs still do not match the performance and reliability of internal combustion engine cars(What are they talking about?) and the lack of charging infrastructure makes them unattractive for anything more than short hops (What is a short hop? 100+ miles?)"
Random thought. Why aren't car rental companies tracking where their vehicles are? Enterprise for example has 2 million. That's about double the number of Uber drivers. The data collection has to be worth a ton (see Uber).
Yea that part didn't make sense to me. Most being sedans, and pretty boring sedans that that, is fair. The reliability thing makes no sense and the "short hop" thing is just weird. Most will agree that, while feasible if you plan ahead, long trips would be inconvenienced in one, most people will be able to use one for all daily driving without issue.
I’m confident every rental car is GPS enabled and they’re also scanning the car when you pick up and drop off and they confirm their data by checking the actual mileage on the car from pickup and dropoff
What caused the 8$ stock price jump yesterday? Agreed. Rented a car in Pittsburgh last year and they had some rule about not taking the car more than 3 states away which they backed with gps.
https://www.autoslash.com/blog-and-...ing-on-you-the-story-of-connected-rental-cars In general, the information collected is intended to serve the company's needs. There is no intent to spy on rental car customers but the companies do want to keep an eye on their assets. GPS: Used to report the location of vehicles with mechanical problems, recalls, accidents, and also to help when vehicles are stolen or suspected as stolen. Enterprise once lost a car for more than two years without noticing, then used OnStar to quickly locate the car. Avis also uses the GPS settings when a customer declares that a vehicle was dropped off as an unattended (but allowed) return after hours. Remote Lock / Unlock: Leave the keys in the rental car? The most common case for unlocking the car remotely is to help customers who lock keys in the car. Remote Shutoff: If the car still running after an accident or stolen, remote shutoff precludes the vehicle from moving. Operating Statistics: Rental car companies extensively document the service history of cars; operating statistics help plan maintenance and alert the rental car company of problems. Fuel Levels: Although it's not expressly listed in Hertz's policy, that company was the innovator on fuel metering. Fuel levels are usually only checked at the time of pickup and return.
wait so your position is that if i rent a car from enterprise and drop it off somewhere and don't return it after the scheduled time they have no way to figure out where the car is? i find that difficult to believe.
i think an internal email musk sent about 'ramping' production in California. they're always ramping something. funny that his internal emails have just now become what he would previously put on twitter.
