How is best launch angle measured? Is it closest to a specific angle that results in line drives? If so, what is the ideal launch angle they're using to judge that?
Not that I’m trying to jinx it(see I am), but strasburg has put together one of his more healthy seasons this year.
I’m assuming they actually meant second highest launch angle. I’ve also seen 25 mentioned as considered a good number. His average is going to be significantly under 25 due to ground balls being negative launch. So when they say best here, they simply mean highest imo. Best is gonna be fairly subjective.
I’d imagine if that happens he would have a slightly lower PC given he wouldn’t have thrown in over two weeks.
Yeah. No one averages anywhere close to 25 so I think it's just as close as you can get to that numberish
Ozzie in one of his pop up slumps last year might challenge this concept though. Dude probably went through spells with a 75 degree launch average.
For those who are new to launch angle, or who need a quick refresher as to the “guidelines” here is a quick rundown of the varying degrees of Launch Angle: Ground ball: Less than 10 degrees Line Drive: 10-25 degrees Fly ball: 25-50 degrees Pop up: Greater than 50 degrees. Did you know that the average launch angle in the big leagues is 11.83 degrees? Former AL MVP Josh Donaldson’s average launch angle in 2017 was 13.42 degrees. During his 2015 MVP season, Donaldson’s average launch angle was 8.4 degrees AL Rookie of the Year Aaron Judge’s average launch angle in 2017 was 15.74 degrees. World Series Champion Jose Altuve’s average launch angle in 2017 was 9.8 degrees. NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton’s average launch angle in 2017 was 11.1 degrees.
