Don't think he has flees; he doesn't itch, we give him 3 month medicine, and the vet text's when he and the cat are due.

Goes to daycare, the park, and was at my parents last weekend.

Having dogs has really put a damper on the 4th of July. Spent the whole day with my dogs because one is scared of the fireworks and the other wants to go on a barking fit at every single one.

Was never really a believer in pet insurance. Think I had it for a cat once and it was awful.

But I'm about a solid $7,000 into one dog between and knee and a laser surgery for cancer and about 9,000 into another dog for two knees.

That before I dropped $8,000 Tuesday for an MRI and surgery for a herniated disc.

Unfortunately it wasn't a disc in his neck, but a massive tumor. :tebow:

My only option at this point is Steroids then radiation, but he has to react positively to steroids.

After 24hrs, he didn't show improvement. I'm waiting on pins and needles right now for the 2nd update call.

I've been a wreck for 3 days. I went and visited Wednesday and it was probably the hardest thing I've ever done. He just cried and whimpered out of excitement to see us.

My two other dogs keep looking for him, checking other rooms for him.

I'm in a constant state of being heart broken...like I grabbed 3 treats the other night out of habit and started crying.

    Shit sucks

My neighbor across the street was firing fireworks off in the middle of the street (for 4th day in a row) and a neighbor called the cops on him because our city ordinance says no fireworks on public property. Firework shooter is pissed and yelled at my neighbor that he is now going to light off fireworks in his driveway all the way until 11:45 like the ordinance says he can. Been going for an hour already....my poor pups going to have a heart attack

FDA warns of possible link between dog food and heart disease, and identifies 16 food brands that are part of its investigation

    • The Food and Drug Administration is investigating a possible link between certain dog foods and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), which can cause congestive heart failure.
    • The investigation involves 560 cases of dogs diagnosed with DCM. Most of the animals consumed foods that were grain-free (91%) and contained peas and/or lentils (93%), the FDA has found.
    • The FDA on Thursday identified food brands most frequently identified in the case reports that it's studying. These include Acana, Zignature, and Taste of the Wild.

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating a possible link between certain dog foods and a potentially fatal heart disease in dogs.

The investigation involves 560 cases of dogs diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a disease of the heart muscle that often leads to congestive heart failure. Some 119 of the dogs have died, according to the FDA.

Out of those 560 dogs, most consumed foods that were grain-free (91%) and contained peas and/or lentils (93%), the FDA has found.

The agency first issued an alert about the possible link between certain foods and DCM in July. The FDA is now identifying the food brands most frequently identified in the case reports that it's studying.

    [IMG]The Food and Drug Administration
The FDA has not issued a recall of any of the foods on the list and said it had not yet determined how they may be linked to DCM.

"It's important to note that the FDA doesn't yet know how certain diets may be associated with DCM in some dogs," the FDA said in a notice posted on its website on Thursday. "However, the FDA is first and foremost a public health agency, and takes seriously its responsibility to protect human and animal health. In the case of DCM, the agency has an obligation to be transparent with the pet-owning public regarding the frequency with which certain brands have been reported."

Here's the list of dog foods identified most frequently in the reports that the FDA is studying.

    • Acana
    • Zignature
    • Taste of the Wild
    • 4Health
    • Earthborn Holistic
    • Blue Buffalo
    • Nature's Domain
    • Fromm
    • Merrick
    • California Natural
    • Natural Balance
    • Orijen
    • Nature's Variety
    • NutriSource
    • Nutro
    • Rachael Ray Nutrish
Champion Petfoods, which owns the Acana and Orijen brands, responded to the FDA's notice with a statement saying that its products are safe.

"We take this very seriously and will continue to work internally and with other industry leaders on research into the cause of DCM in order to help Pet Lovers understand the facts," the company said. "Our own research, and the millions of pets who have thrived by eating our food over 25 years, have shown that Champion pet foods are safe."

Champion Petfoods also said the FDA's notice "provides no causative scientific link between DCM and our products, ingredients or grain-free diets as a whole."

"In the recipes Champion makes, we emphasize fresh and raw meat with total animal-derived ingredients ranging from 60% to 85% of the finished product," the company said. "Legumes are not a significant feature in Champion's recipes, and never have been."

My initial reaction is that there are a lot of really popular dog food brands on a graph that doesn’t mention units sold. The graphic cites “incidents reported” regardless of market representation of the brand.

Kind of like saying a Honda Civic is inherently more dangerous than a Tesla Model 3 because they’re involved in ten times as many car crashes.

16 hours drive to get to Michigan starting tomorrow. Then up to Canada.

One of my dogs takes dramamine but I can't remember the dosage. I'm guessing it's 2 tabs for a 90lb beast of a lab. Anyone else use it with their dogs?

So I'm fairly certain that Kevin already has hip dysplasia at 3 months old. I knew that it was a possibility with him being a retriever so I've been watching him for all the symptoms and he already has a pretty exaggerated sway to his walk as well as the "bunny-hop" gait. Probably going to mention it to the vet and see if they want to do x-rays to confirm. He's also had giardia and coccidia pretty much the entire month that we've had him. He's a smart little guy but jesus this has been a rough start after nursing our last pup through liver cancer until she passed away.

So my ten year old Weimaraner started have seizures two years ago(eight in one night). I took her to the vet, they did some blood work, and couldn't really find anything wrong. They gave me some medication to try, but I knew she likely had brain cancer. I figured I would have to put her down which I'm sure most of you know isn't easy. So one morning she wants to go outside(I lived out in the sticks and would let her free roam) so I opened the door and away she went. I never saw her again. Swiz was a great dog and her ending fit.

Fast forward to this year and I got the urge to get another dog. I didn't want another Weimaraner so after months of looking into different breeds I decided on a dutch shepherd. I fully expect her to be a demon, but I'm here for it. This is Jinks

Been a while since I posted in here, but I picked beaux up from boarding Sunday night. Went to work Monday and got home to vomit on my bed. Cleaned it up and gave him half sized dinner. Tuesday morning gave him half breakfast and left for work. Got home and didn’t see vomit so I fed him a full sized dinner. Middle of the night last night he throws up again, and my roommate texted me this morning that he found vomit from yesterday.

Any ideas? I don’t think he needs to see a vet since he still wants to eat and is acting normal, but I don’t want to come home to another mess to clean up.

Maybe feed him a small portion, then another small portion later? Maybe he's eating too much too fast? Tosu has that problem of eating too much too fast and it always results in vomiting up nearly his whole dinner.

I had that thought, but it’s pretty well digested by the time he throws up. I decided not to feed him this morning, so hopefully I don’t come home to vomit again. I may pick up some canned pumpkin or sweet potatoes and give him that tonight.

One of my pups had some scary episodes this week... Not sure what to make of it. We spent two weeks with my parents and their two dogs. Last two days we were at our island Wyatt had some bad coughing fits in the evening. The first time all the dogs got up to go bark at a boat and he went with them. He came back last slowly and started coughing and laid down like he couldn't breathe. After a minute or two he was good to go. The second time they stayed in the cottage but he did the same thing. Both days he was running around, swimming, barking etc as much as he wanted.

Google says it might be a heart problem. It only happened in the evenings and he had gone as balls to the wall as his gimpy body can go for the last week. A little scared because he was my first dog and I don't want to find out he's having real issues at 6.5 years old

Yeah that was my impression too. Staff we interacted with seem nice but it's just underfunded/understaffed/overcrowded. Small town Texas so there's a ton of high energy pitt/bully mixes there that I'm sure were surrenders or rescues.

That's kinda the way all rescue shelters are, most all are very underfunded, at the least
And they all depend on volunteers to help accomplish all they can

The one we got our little rescue from, the main caretakers lived in a house on site. When we visited they let us inside to meet/visit the dog, they literally turned the A/C on in the house for us to visit, it was probably 90 degrees in their house when we walked in.
This is in central Texas in August.
