id rather stay in a toilet bowl than midtown. midtown fucking sucks. there are a billion great restaurants in NYC. Not that many of them are in midtown imo. theres nothing to do in Midtown thats worth a fuck other than the Park imo.

Id stay on the lower east/west side, soho things of that nature.

I get why most people think its a great idea to pick midtown but its really an awful idea. New York is beyond incredible where people live, not where they go to work. People think “Midtown, wow its right in the middle of everything!” no its actually far from everything worth a damn.

The above is really true. I’ve been working hospitality for years and it’s the most common misconception by people visiting here. They see it in the middle and think great. Unfortunately it’s not, I wouldn’t even tell most people to go to midtown at all.

Depending on what style or scene you’re looking for, here are some hotel options off my head that should be in your price range and are in much more fun areas:

    The James
    Made Hotel
    nolitan
    Broome
    The Ludlow
    The Standard
    Nomad
    Sixty SOHO
    The Edition
    Public
    Freehand

    Thanks!

I want to do a few museums, shows, and sight see...in that order. I'm sure there's great food all over, but China cafe, Peter luger, and a 3* Michelin (per se maybe?) Are all I need....

Stayed in midtown last Christmas time to do all the stuff up tourist wise.

Won't stay there again since we checked all that off and the food/drinking prospects are very poor. Plus sub way is simple.

Team East village LES for staying. Need to try Brooklyn areas when the weather is nice.

Eat at Le Bernardin not Per Se.

You can get to Midtown and all the tourist attractions easily via the subway. There’s no reason to sleep there.

Midtown gives you easy access to lots of the big museums. Theater district. Central Park, etc.

Christmas wise you get Rockefeller center and a bunch of Christmas markets, the decorated windows etc.

I would stay at the William Vale in Brooklyn, Hotel Indigo LES (Mr. Purple), or Freehand (Broken Shaker Rooftop).

Or Gramercy Park Hotel so you can go in the Park.

Yeah you can easily get to the museums uptown from downtown by subway or uber. No reason to stay in midtown to be close. That said, tons of cool museums and sight seeing besides the classics you're thinking of. A nice "run" is The Whitney/The Highline/Standard beer garden. Or Brooklyn Bridge/Brooklyn Museum/Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Or Eataly/Madison Sq park/Nomad Hotel Bar.

Lugers is awesome. Go to wolfgangs downtown if you can't do/want an easier option than lugers and want incredible steak. Grab a drink before at Smith & Mills. Bernardin over Per Se, but others in here might be more opinionated on the matter as I don't go for the michelin places. I think something more like Carbone or Four Charles or Minetta Tavern etc is an awesome meal and an awesome not from nyc but want to feel nyc-y experience more than a michelin place. To each their own. I'd pass on China Cafe and go to Uncle Boons or a Momofuku instead.

You will get a lot of differing opinions on where and what to do from everyone cause well thats nyc and everyone is horny about knowing the best things. Try to just walk around downtown and take it easy. Most people plan too much and don't get to just take in the west village or soho in casual way that's the real blessing of nyc.

30th bday coming up in a couple of months, looking for venue inspiration.

-Would like to find a bar where I could reserve a section for ~40 people.
-Someplace in lower Manhattan that's easily accessible. Thinking NoHo, Bowery, Greenwich, WV, EV, LES, Union Square, etc.
-Not overly hip or fancy. Want it to be easy and stress-free for people to get drinks, stand/sit, arrive/leave etc.

Not every elevator goes to the basement so often times the bottom of the elevator hoist is above an occupied floor. In fact, most architects are making you transfer elevators more frequently these days. Ever park in a garage, take a elevator to the lobby then get on a new one to your hotel room? That transfer makes you pass by security and retail so owners love it

Hey guys, just got gifted with a trip to your city next month. The wife and I have been a few times but just figured I'd check in for any recs.

I need to book the hotel and we'll be using Hilton points which seems to limit us to Midtown or Downtown. Any recs on Hilton brand hotels or location?

Any tours or experiences that might be less touristy? We've done Empire, WTC, Statue of Libert, High Line, Chelsea Market and then food tours in Little Italy, Chinatown, and Greenwich Village (and visited the comedy cellar). Anything else we're missing?

We get in on Friday Jan 24, so I was thinking we'd do more free roam tourist stuff that day, and do maybe a scheduled food tour in Brooklyn on Saturday since we've never been there.

Kind of wouldn't mind seeing a play, but tickets look so expensive.

So I'm going next month (see post above this) but am a bit hamstrung on hotels since I'm using Hilton points. Pretty much every Hilton property is either Midtown or Lower Manhattan/Downtown. Just booked the Millennium Hilton right next to the WTC since it looked nice and is right by all the major subway lines. But if you know a better Hilton property option, I'm open to suggestions.

I was thinking of doing a walking food/drink tour over there on the Saturday we'll be there.

We get in fairly early on a Friday, so I was thinking lunch somewhere downtown then find something to fill the time between lunch and dinner. Do dinner in the Village and do a comedy cellar show after.

Saturday do the aforementioned food/drink tour of Brooklyn midday. Saturday night...???

That's where I'm at in the planning of this trip .
