Please allow me to bitch and gloat for a sec.

So back when Prime Days was going on I bought some smart switches and plugs. Come to find out I didn't have a neutral wire (which is required by most smart switches) in the box even though the house was built in 99. So I took to reddit to see if I could get some answers on how to make it work without calling an electrician and spending money I don't have to get my house rewired. When I posted my pic of my switch nobody bothered to even consider my question. Instead I was met with "You need to call a pro in" "Your house is going to burn to the ground" "Who the fuck wires a house like that" etc etc. Now granted the guy who built and wired my house must have had an IQ just above retarded. Instead of using 3 way switch on each box, he wired all my 3 ways with with just one 3 way and a single pole at the other end. This of course led to the switch not working properly (one had to be flipped a certain way for the other switch to work) and also led to an extra live wire, which the dumb mfer just tied to the ground screw.

Now I can understand this triggering a group of electricians but come the fuck on. If someone is asking for help and you can....help a mfer out. I mean if I'd had the cash I'd just paid electrician to begin with.

Anyway, long story short, A guy who I had told to go fuck himself with his multimeter wound up sharing some knowledge with me. I watched an awesome YouTube video that helped me understand how to wire a 3 way switch.

Bought a book that helped me determine how my 3 way switch was specifically wired and got the damn thing fixed myself

Then I took it one step further and passed the wires through one box (creating a dummy switch that I will blank off), turned my 3 way into a single pole, and used the extra traveler wire as my new neutral. Now Alexa turns my lights off for me

CaLl A pRo MaN. YoU DoNt KnOw WtF yOuR dOiNg.

    /End petty rant

Did you include the extra interest you're paying on that 65k, or just the useless $172/mo pmi? You'd also add ~ $470/mo to your house payment (300 in extra mortgage, 172 in PMI), which is no chump change, even for someone buying a 435k house.

I don't know, I just feel like opportunity cost wins out at this point over possibly coming out on top investing it.

It looks like I'll be joining this page. Was a bit dicey for a few days after the inspector came through with a 60 page report but the sellers were willing to cover 4k of closing costs plus fix a couple of issues. Purposefully picked something that hadn't yet been remodeled so there would be an opportunity to increase the value. One of the challenges will be that it is in the upper 20% of prices in the neighborhood already so need to not price ourselves out of the neighborhood. This is the first time in my life I've expected to be somewhere long enough that buying made sense. Excited but already a bit nervous. Will be hitting y'all up for advice alot I'm sure.

A couple of initial questions. The house is reasonably big 3500^' with a back yard that opens on a green belt. The bff is concerned and wants a decent security system. I've heard a lot about the new diy systems. Are there any that stand above the pack?

WiFi is mandatory in the house so I know I'll need a repeater system. Recommendations?

Last, as we are looking to fix/remodel the place are there any things to Target from an exemption/rebate position?

    Thanks all

For security - I do a split approach were I have professional monitoring and seperate cloud based cameras. The security companies I've dealt with install the window and door sensors for you, which would be pricey and a pain for a large house if you were to go total DIY. My last 2 houses had already been wired, so the security company just leveraged that.

Angelcam was the cheapest cloud platform for my cameras and I liked their app and customer service. Just bought the blink xt2 due to some limited install options for hardwired, but haven't turned them on yet

I'm team orbi for wifi. The 3 pack should be able to cover you just fine

I was told explicitly to stay away from them through my appliance buddy. However, I will say that an appliance guy at Lowe’s said to me, “When they are running, they are awesome.”

I’m thinking Samsung marketing probably scooped him up by now.

I had a Samsung washer and dryer in my last house. No issues over 5 years in the house. Sold them to my buyer, who immediately ripped out all my carefully curated planters after moving in, so hopefully they've broken in horrific and messy fashion.

Bought Samsung washer and dryer back in 2015 with our Samsung fridge. Fridge was awful as I’ve discussed previously. Haven’t had any major issues with washer dryer but would probably buy a different brand the next time we need to buy some, which will hopefully be many years from now.

    Weird coincidence.
Samsung announced a voluntary recall of certain top-load washers manufactured between March 2011 and October 2016.
    Check your models:
    https://pages.samsung.com/us/tlw/index.html

There was a class action settlement so could get some money.

After recently doing more research into washers and dryers than I'd like to admit, I'd stay away from Samsung. There are a lot of incredibly vocal Speed Queen fans, but from what I could gather online and from talking to appliance folks from 2018 onward their top load washers have been pretty garbage (there was a redesign starting with the 2018 models). Their newest 2019 model (the TC5) is supposed to be a throw back to their older, better stuff, but the TC5 is so new there isn't much out there on how well it does. A friend of mine bought one and loves to talk about it, but he also has some Mississippi redneck in him and he just like inefficient steal products.

For efficiency and quality reasons, I stayed away from SQ and went with LG, as they seemed to be very well reviewed.

Long time listener, first time caller. Dos preguntas:
    1. Came home from a long weekend and toilet was running. I've been able to mess with it in the past, but couldn't fix it this time. Plumber comes out today, need a whole new system installed, going to be about $4-500. Cool cool cool. I don't have time to go buy the parts and get a repair guy out for a few days. Question - is there any harm in turning the water to my toilet on/off for like a week until I can get it repaired? Literally, turn it off when not in use, and turn it on when it needs to be flushed? We're only home during the mornings before work and evenings after, so it probably only flushes 4-5x/day. Just not sure about constantly turning the water on/off and if that could lead to problems.
    2. On that same note, I want to update my bathroom -- new shower/tub, tiling, walls, etc. My bathroom is supper small -- maybe 10-12 feet x 6-8 feet. Only bathroom in an 1,100 sq ft condo. I realize it's an incredibly vague question, but is it possible to even ballpark a price? Not looking for super nice, but just modernize it. I have $7.5K-10K in my head based on absolutely nothing.

My house has some indoor and outdoor speakers, with all of the wires feeding into one place. Of course they aren't marked. Short of using the process of elimination and connecting each combination to a receiver, is there a way to determine which positive and negative wires go together?

I had the bff call att to see if fiber would be available at the new place. They told her yes with a max speed of 50Mbps. I'm like, that's not fiber that's copper. Call them back on a conference call and they really tried to be sneaky.

Me: will fiber be available at my new address?
Them: great question. You will be happy to hear that you will get speeds up to 50mbps.
Me: that's not fiber is it.
Them: well, umm nope it's copper.

Anyways, going with Cox to start with up to 1000mbps. Company is going to pay for it anyways.

Our att fiber is great during the day. Then about 6 pm it drops in and out for the rest of the night until we go to bed. Not sure if it is a neighborhood volume thing as that is beyond me and my knowledge set but they will not send a tech out in the evening and insist everything is fine and will not credit our bill.

I know I should just change but I am a grown man that sometimes talks sports and fears change.

Turning the water off at the wall valve won't hurt anything. Just be easy with the valve if doing so daily.
Depending on your market and finish schedule (mostly material and fixture selection), $10-12k for a pretty basic update. If you are moving anything, have expensive tastes, or live in a big metro, it will only go up. We installed a $7k vanity last month, for reference. Get multiple quotes, and ask in here if you have questions. Godspeed.
