Will a megafight finally land in the Middle East? Saudi Arabia makes push for Andy Ruiz-Anthony Joshua 2 By Mike Coppinger 12m ago
Saudi Arabia delivered a literal dump truck full of $100s to his driveway. How is that hard to understand?
I understand the business part of it. But this is a make or break fight for AJ's career. If he loses, everything they've built for and toward is down the drain. Just from a pure risk standpoint, I'm parking this fight in the UK, where AJ's had his best fights and has been most comfortable. Now, if they think he's going to lose either way and they're cashing out, then by all means.
But is it really make or break? We throw that around a lot and then fast forward a few more wins later and we watch that guy again. i.e. we would watch Keith Thurman vs Errol Spence a year from now. Even despite Pac loss and if Spence loses to Porter. *not a great analogy. but money talks.
If AJ gets drilled by Ruiz again? Yeah, I think it's make or break. At that point, AJ's got to go completely back to the drawing board (he's already talked about contemplating a corner change). We'll still tune in to AJ fights because he's a fun HW, but the aura and some of the juice is going to be wiped out. An AJ loss, and we're tuning in for Anthony Joshua-David Price at the O2 next year.
I don’t know what to think. On paper it’s a mismatch. In the ring it didn’t look like a fluke Tyson v Douglas thing. The excuses/ reasons came out quick. Originally I thought it was a fluke and AJ would easily win the the rematch, now I don’t know.
Tyson/Douglas wasn't really a fluke. Douglas was winning the fight before he knocked him out. There was some video where AJ seemed confident he could win the rematch but idk. He's going to have to fix a lot of shit to do that.
Breaking: Junior welterweight titlist Regis Prograis has pulled out of the World Boxing Super Series final, a unification fight with Josh Taylor that was supposed to be take place no later than early October, and he and promoter Lou DiBella have filed a lawsuit in New Jersey district court seeking a judge to free him from the contract. They claim WBSS organizers have missed hard deadlines to place money for his purse and the winner's bonus in escrow.
Tonight on DAZN, featuring one of the top prospects in the game in a step-up fight. DAZN, 7:00 pm ET, Vergil Ortiz Jr vs Antonio Orozco, Joshua Franco vs Oscar Negrete III. Ortiz is one of the most exciting young prospects in the sport today, a wicked puncher with skills at 140/147. Orozco, now 31, was a long-simmering prospect who had some weight issues at 140 and eventually got a title shot, losing to Jose Ramirez last year. He’s a good step for Ortiz here, not without risk. Franco and Negrete are bantamweight rivals who have had two really good fights that went largely overlooked because they weren’t featured on big shows or anything, so it’s nice to see them get a feature slot on a DAZN card. Ortiz, 21, will look to follow up on his very impressive wipeout of tough veteran Mauricio Herrera on May 4, returning home to Texas for this fight with the 31-year-old Orozco, who last year lost a world title fight at 140 to Jose Ramirez. The co-feature is a bantamweight bout between Joshua Franco and Oscar Negrete, the third meeting between these two. They went to a draw last October, and Franco edged Negrete by split decision in April. Both fights were really good, and it’s nice to see them bring their rivalry to a bigger show.
You could maybe make the argument that the match itself came at the exact right time for Douglas to beat Tyson, but the KO was not a fluke. Douglas was winning the shit out of that fight. That'd be like someone saying Clemson beating Alabama in the Natty this year was a fluke and fuck you forever for making me say that.
