Ok, so am I missing the Tool song somewhere? This can't be the song, it's just 10 minutes of Grave intro theft.

I listened to the song again on my way to work this morning and still enjoyed it despite Joe's best efforts. I may give 10,000 Days(which I also like a lot) a good spin this morning as well in an attempt to play the life out of this band so I can hate them on the internet.

Also I think Maynard admitted like 15 years ago that his range and ability to perform are pretty much shot. He cannot sustain over a tour what he was once able to without his voice going to shit.

Yeah I think they're so obsessed with the quality of their live show that he's not going to do much to really strain his voice on this album.

I will say that his voice sounded amazing back in May and (other than the new material) was the highlight of the show

I think it’s the latter more than the former. He’s never been a crazy-octave singer, his strength is his dynamic range and ability to maintain a consistent tone whenever he goes high/loud.

It was an urban legend that he had throat cancer or some other debilitating vocal injury after Lateralus but he’s been pretty consistent and still sounds amazing in concert.

I never said he was horrible and I am not talking about internet legend. He literally said his voice cannot hold up like it used to. He can still hit probably most anything, just not for any sustained period of time.

I think that's pretty standard among aging vocalists, regardless of genre. It's not at all shocking that Maynard can't still do everything with his voice that he could do in his 20s/early 30s.

I read somewhere that this album will sort of be like one long song. You'll hear bits and pieces of riffs from other songs, and one track will flow into the next one. Assuming that's true, considering the ending of this song, I'm very curious to hear the next one. I have to imagine it's harder than the 3 we've heard so far.

was kind of wondering if that would be the case after hearing this track, maybe not for the full album but still as a part of a greater whole

I'm always down for that sort of thing tbh

Hence why I said it was the latter (him protecting his voice for tours) and not the former (his range and ability to perform being “shot”).

It's just an EP, not even a full album. Came out between Pretty Hate Machine ("Head Like A Hole" etc.) and Downward Spiral ("Closer", "Hurt", etc.) IMO it's a great mix of a heavy guitar based sound while still using some sampling. But not near as far into computer left field as they eventually got. When I play this I get super hype.

My friend is 4 years younger than me and Lateralus was his first Tool album, where Aenima was mine. He consistently sleeps on Undertow and Aenima as a result and it pisses me off!

My friend and I used to meet up every night after our HS jobs and sit on a nowheresville dirt road and play Undertow through over and over. It's a masterpiece. All the water imagery starting with the weird outboard motor sound before the first track and culminating in the epic closer "Flood." The watery sound effect on his vocal trail off in "Prison Sex." The lyrical imagery in "Undertow" and "Swamp Song." Plus Tool just plain kicked ass back then. It's clear #2 after Aenima for me.

One of my young friend's complaints is that Undertow and Aenima aren't "recorded as good" compared to Lateralus and 10k Days which I guess I'll give him

I think the audio quality in Aenima is as good as Lateralus, just different sounding music. I agree about Undertow though, and that may be part of why I've never gotten as into it. I got into Tool pretty late(2005ish), so I didn't really have that one album that hooked me. I had a decent sized catalog to dive into, and had another album to add to that a year later.

Same. I love Lateralus but Aenima is a legit masterpiece imo, not a single weak track on the record. Every song is fantastic with several ranking among the best rock songs of the decade. I also came around to Undertow in recent years, Intolerance/Prison Sex/Sober is an insane opening to an album.

Ænima is my fave but Lateralus is a close second and their most technically impressive album, IMO. The work that went into creating those time shifts is just baffling. Plus it has one of the GOAT bass lines.
