How about Bill’s, my son is funny. Like, literally. Ben Simmons is funny. You’d love him. He’s, like, actually funny. I’m a little concerned about him, though.
I like that Bill's son is named after a hopefully great Sixers (and probably eventually Lakers) player.
Bill criticism aside, that guy has had an awesome fucking career. And no way he’s funny enough to write in a writers room. Maybe he’s just good at adding on to other people’s ideas.
I think in his prime writing days from 2001-2009 he was pretty funny. His mailbags and movie quote columns on the NBA and NFL were great.
Carlin is the best player on a championship winning team...Paul George is more of a Jay Mohr/Artie Lange second banana type comparison imo.
Yikes. There are like 5 people at the ringer who would be employable elsewhere. Lots of people who will be teaching high school if they lose their job there
i'm sure he is in on it. everyone is. will be interesting to see how this goes. i'm guessing the profitable part of the business is the podcasts and the blog loses money. what happens if he just turns it into a podcast network and ~200 people are out of work
Your guess isn't worth shit, but what would happen is the union will ensure that everyone being let go has adequate severance packages.
Podcasts are where it’s at especially for the Ringer. I could see him recognizing it but if push comes to shove they downsize a decent number of writers.
He brings in more eyeballs/listeners which equals ad money and site clicks. Guy was at ESPN for 14 years. I can see some less accomplished people unhappy but not everyone is worth the same in that business or has the same bargaining cache.
There are a few newly minted comrades whose work i try to make sure to check out. Rob Harvilla, Robert Mays, Kevin Clark, and Sean Fennessey first and foremost
I mean I don’t care if they unionize or not, but there are plenty of companies without unions that have retirement plans. Kind of shocking they didn’t have one yet.
They do it to retain employees Not necessary when your employees other job prospects are to teach high school They need to unionize because 95% of ringer employees are replaceable
i definitely don't check their site like i did grantland but i wonder how much of that is just how i consume content; i access pretty much everything through twitter or a website (reddit, tmb, etc.) some of their pieces are good still
They also don’t have any personalities, other than Shea Serrano and Mallory/Jason that anyone cares about Micah Peters is writing articles and podcasting about obscure anime characters
I'll read what they have to say when it comes to the Blazers & their Exit Interviews from new released movies and shows that I've seen. That and the occasional content like Tarantino Week but that's pretty much it. I'm mainly there for The Rewatchables pod and I'll listen to maybe 1 out of every 7 BS pods if I'm bored.
I only listen to their podcasts. I rarely remember to go to the website. When I do, I usually find one thing to read but nothing that makes it a must see place to visit every few days. My company didn’t offer 401k until three years ago and my wife’s law firm still doesn’t and she’s been there for 10 years. It’s nice mine does but they are the first company I’ve worked at who does. It’s a great perk and helps a ton but I don’t think a company has to do it. The Ringer as mentioned likely still isn’t profitable yet so it’s hard to offer it at the moment.
i catch most their articles that get spread on social media but dont actually check the website, they do get surprising social penetration so there's a value to that even if the actual ad production doesn't pay all the bills but i also don't really check any website like that
