Almost said that too, how on earth was he so aggressive. Probably one of those that you never want to come across since he was so feisty. Almost willing to die right there

    My favorite Lou story...

"A Notre Dame team that was downtrodden by the Hurricanes for the better part of a decade began to fight back.

Shortly thereafter, Coaches Jimmy Johnson and Lou Holtz pulled their teams into respective locker rooms prior to the opening kick. It was a mood unlike any other in the Irish room. After a few moments, Holtz blew his whistle and began to address his team. "Men, I have no doubt that you will do well today. You'll be fine, you'll be fine. But I have one favor to ask of you... Save Jimmy Johnson's ass for me!""

    midweekk musings

Midweek thoughts about the Notre Dame football program, its recruiting efforts and college football.

    FALL CAMP BREAKOUT PLAYERS
Notre Dame heads into the second week of fall camp, which means there is still a lot of time for players to rise up or fall down the depth chart. There are three players, however, that have completely taken charge of their positions.

On top of that, the way they have played through the first nine practices has each player on the verge of becoming a major weapon for the Irish in 2019.

    MICHAEL YOUNG, WIDE RECEIVER

Much of the offseason discussion at wide receiver revolved around the emergence of senior Chase Claypool as the team’s go-to weapon and the talented sophomore class. Claypool has been every bit as good during the spring and sophomores like Lawrence Keys III, Braden Lenzy and recently Kevin Austin have all played well.

But the emergence of the sophomores has been overshadowed by the outstanding start to camp that junior Michael Young is having. Young has completely grabbed hold of the starting X position, and he’s become a top target in the pass game. The Destrehan, La. native has always flashed big play ability, but in fall camp he’s been a consistent weapon, showing the ability to make tough plays as well as the big plays.

Young will have to continue proving he can stay healthy, something that has been an issue for him in the past, but if his current level of play continues, he’ll add a much-needed boost in impact production to the offense.

    JEREMIAH OWUSU-KORAMOAH, ROVER

Athleticism has never been the concern for junior rover Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. Even when he enrolled as a 17-year old, the native of Hampton, Va. impressed with his speed and range. A case could be made that Owusu-Koramoah is pound-for-pound the best athlete on the Irish defense.

What he has done in fall camp is turn his potential into production. Owusu-Koramoah has been arguably the top playmaker on defense in the open practices, using his speed, range and instincts to be highly disruptive in the pass game. Twice he’s undercut a Chris Finke route to pick off an Ian Bookpass; once on a short out throw and another on a post route, showing his versatility to cover. Those are just two of many examples where he’s been able to get his hands on the football.

During the spring we saw instances where Owusu-Koramoah struggled to take on and beat blocks on the perimeter, but that hasn’t shown up in the fall. Owusu-Koramoah has been highly disruptive on the perimeter, and if he can carry over his strong camp into the regular season, and if he can stay healthy, he’ll give the defense a much-needed boost in production at rover.

    DONTE VAUGHN, CORNERBACK

Notre Dame signed an outstanding group of cornerbacks in the 2016 class, landing Julian Love, Troy Pride Jr. and Donte Vaughn. Love set records at Notre Dame and developed into an All-American. Pride was outstanding late last season and is poised for a monster senior season.

When the trio was thrust into the lineup as freshmen in 2016, a strong case could be made that Vaughn was the best of the group. He tied for the team lead with six pass break ups and showed top-level coverage ability. Over the next two years Vaughn has not been able to stay healthy, and the injuries have caused his play to nose dive.

When fall camp started it was expected that sophomores Houston Griffithand TaRiq Bracy would battle for the starting spot opposite Pride, but after just nine practices it is Vaughn who has put a choke hold on the position. He has been truly outstanding in coverage during one-on-one, seven-on-seven and team periods. There are practices where the offense simply avoids him, and if that continues, and if he can stay healthy, Vaughn will be part of an outstanding cornerback tandem.

    IRISH OFFENSIVE CLASS EVEN STRONGER
Notre Dame is in the midst of putting together its best offensive line of the Brian Kelly tenure. The release of the latest Rivals250 shows that the class is even stronger now, at least on paper.

St. Louis (Mo.) DeSmet wide receiver

    Jordan Johnson
remains a five-star recruit and checked in as the No. 21 player in the entire country.

After winning the fastest man competition at the Nike Football The Opening Finals for the second straight year, Chester (Va.) Thomas Dale running back

    Chris Tyree
saw his ranking rise over 20 spots, and he now checks in as the No. 40 player in the country. Tyree is now a composite five-star recruit according to 247Sports.

    NOTRE DAME
Notre Dame has never signed a Top 50 player at wide receiver and running back in the same class since the beginning of the Rivals era.

    Phoenix (Ariz.) Pinnacle offensive tackle

    Tosh Baker
jumped up to No. 44 in the latest rankings, giving the Irish a trio of Top 50 prospects. Since Kelly arrived at Notre Dame the Irish have never signed more than one Top 50 offensive player in one class. The way it stands right now the Irish have commitments from three Top 50 recruits.

Alexandria (Ky.) Covington Catholic tight end

    Michael Mayer
was named the Offensive MVP at The Opening, and his outstanding summer resulted in him getting a big rankings boost. Mayer jumped all the way up to No. 58 in the national rankings, giving the Irish four Top 60 recruits on offense. For context purposes, only once in the Kelly tenure has Notre Dame signed four Top 60 recruits in one class. The Irish offense right now has four such players.

It should be noted that the class that previously did that (2013) ended up ranked as the nation’s No. 3 overall class.

Red Bank (N.J.) Catholic tight end

    Kevin Bauman
checked in at No. 127 and Mars (Pa.) offensive tackle Michael Carmody is ranked as a four-star recruit.

NOTRE DAME A TON TEAM FOR THE 2020 DRAFT
It's one thing for an analyst that covers Notre Dame to rave about the increase in talent in recent seasons. But it's not just me that continues to make that argument. In a recent Yahoo Sports article, Eric Edholm ranked the Irish roster as the sixth best in all of college football when it comes to the 2020 NFL Draft.

Edholm had this to say about the Irish:

"The trenches are once again loaded, enhancing a program that has produced strong talent on the offensive line (Quenton Nelson, Ronnie Stanley, Nick Martin, Zack Martin) and defensive line (Jerry Tillery, Isaac Rochell, Stephon Tuitt) in recent years under Brian Kelly.

DL coach Mike Elston is one of the best assistants in college football, and he has two stalwarts — Okwara and Kareem — who appear to be solidly in the Day 2 draft range now. Banks might have the highest ceiling among the o-linemen, even after recovering from foot surgery in June.

Claypool, Gilman and Pride have a chance to be among the first 10 players picked at their respective positions. Book is likely a year away from declaring, but can open some NFL eyes this season. Kmet — who also played baseball for the Irish — was pegged as a sleeper, but he reportedly suffered a collarbone injury that could keep him out a lengthy stretch."

    TWEET OF THE WEEK
Former Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz stopped by practice this week, and as this tweet shows he can still motivate!

waiting for another lb to get injured i guess. Didnt get signed in the FA wave, so usually guys like manti who can provide solid depth and a good few snaps but arent building blocks long term get contracts when the ACLs start popping in training camp. His uncontracted peers are pretty recognisably similar. DJ Alexander and Mason Foster are both really similar players and pretty much in the same boat. Still think its possible the Saints actually resign him if they dont like 7th round draft pick enough to keep. Thing is, as long as these guys keep in shape they have little to gain from practice reps, theyve seen enough playbooks to be ready to go. You want to see what you have with your young blood and your UDFAs

6´4 with speed and quickness, also from all the reports he is very physical and instinctive. Can’t ask for anything else from a safety, he might be jaylon like and play the safety position by himself in a year or two. Let the cbs be more aggressive because he can cover so much ground.

Just home, we are pretty damn good. Jurk looked better than I thought he would. Hamilton doesn't make sense. I if he can hold on he and Gilman are going to awesome. Wide receivers target the ball very well. Claypool is a monster. the Lb's looked ok but the DL is covering, they are really good. Armstrong looks good other guys look like roll guys. OL got screamed at a lot complete with a I think it was Kelly "OL you are fucking killing us" May have been Long.

In, I think they were often on the far end and I was watching the D a lot. I think they were getting berated not because they were bad but because the DL is really good. There was one RZ play where they all popped off and drove the DL like 5 yards. I think they will be fine.
