I went to Ardmore, also. Pretty cool. Montrose is where the church is, correct?

Yeah and the Warbonnet monument. That's where all the mule deer were and also where we got closest to those antelope. Think it's a forest service plot that most people don't realize is public.

And the hard thing to convey is that that church iirc is on basically a minimum maintenance road. Like, the kind of road where you don't know if you're on a road or a driveway to a rancher's property.

My buddy and I were driving down what we thought was a road and accidentally stumbled onto some old man's place and saw some antelope right outside so he went to the house trying to knock on the door like some goddamn moron tourist out of a horror movie. Two houses on the property (neither looked livable) and nobody home with rusted out car parts and farm equipment everywhere.

    It's really something out there.

That said there's some sort of pull about the place. Keep wanting to go back when this time of year comes around to be out in nowhere and then drink beer with a bunch of old dudes at the campsite under the clearest night sky I've ever seen.

i think there are a few separate herds in TN and NC has a herd in the Smokies. They placed some in VA and WVA about 7 years ago, but I don't know much about their status.

I decided I'm going to get a crossbow for this season.
There are a shit ton on Ebay and Amazon. Any brands to avoid? Is there a clear best of class brand under $1,000?

My boss uses a crossbow and he spent around $1,000 on it. It’s a Matthews and it’s pretty sweet. That’s about all I got.

Got my kid all sighted in on his bow finally. Pretty awesome seeing him pull a bow that he can use for years. He's been sticking my target with consistent groups. Super satisfying because I didn't start archery until I was 27 or 28. He's been doing it since he can remember and can't believe I didn't grow up with it.

Need to go out and get a few new arrows for this season. Practiced all last fall and a good part this summer. Feel pretty good about taking a shot with my bow this year. We’ll see how I feel once I have one in my peep.

I’ve shot several different broadheads. Rage, slick trick, muzzy, thunderheads. I like the G5 Montecs that I have, but some complain they’re too dull, which I disagree with. It’s milled into one solid piece with no blade inserts or mechanical openings. And they fly like my field points.

Here are a couple more we’re probably going to try to take out.

Mature 6. Pretty sure we’ve had this buck on cameras the last two years.

Old 10. A couple of the guys that have hunted the property longer than me say they’ve had him on camera for 4 years. They think he’s at least 6. 7D54DE05-8903-4BA3-98CF-F64E8995EFC6.jpeg

Then we have this young 7 with potential. He needs another year or two IMO. 2F35C486-803A-488F-8204-84748EC42DCF.jpeg

I have a hunt booked for the first 5 days of rifle season with Whitetail Heaven outfitters out of Kentucky. Booked 3 years ago. Supposedly 48k acres of free range timber and deer, though they are fed year round. A little out of my element, but hopefully a good time

Sounds like fun. I want to go on a Midwest hunt. A guy I work with has been going to Kansas for the last several years but is skipping this year because he’s going to get an Iowa tag next year. He loves going out there. Says it’s totally different than hunting here in Alabama.

Midwest hunting even depends on where you are in each state. The center of each state in the mid plains is basically the dividing line between crop/field hunting for white tails and hill/pasture hunting for mule deer. East is white tails and west is muleys with the center being a mix. Totally different sort of hunting for each.

I definitely don't care for Muleys, just big corn fed white tails

I love muleys. Big ass tall wide racks. And people say they taste different but I’ve never been able to tell. Like both and will shoot both but I definitely prefer muleys myself.

dove season opens a week from Sunday. I suck ass at shooting doves. They come out of nowhere and fly really fast. I think I shot 2 box of shells last time and only killed 3. I may or may not have claimed one that my father in law actually shot. At some point I'm going to buy my own shotgun.

Yeah, I want to get that ag style hunt, hunting small fingers of timber and edges of fields. Everything I’ve heard about and read says patterning is a lot different in that setting. Don’t really have that near me unless I create it.

I was actually listening to that last night and it made me sad that I still hadn’t seen one on our lease. Then I got a call from one of the guys on the lease this morning telling me that one of the cameras caught one.

I haven’t even seen the picture yet because cell service is terrible up there.
