I'm guessing the killer has a lot do with it. If there was a killer that was definitively tied to it then it would probably be more known.

But, there is one for all intents and purposes it is Wayne Williams.

Yeah, but there isn't anything strongly linking him from I can tell. He's never gave a confession either.

Even though Bundy didn't confess until the very end and only a couple of cases were actually tied to him, it seemed like the other cases were easily linked to him.

And I am sure that some of the racial component of the Atlanta murders is part of why I've never heard about it until now.

I definitely agree with your last statement, but I believe there is strong evidence linking Williams to many of the murders whether it was presented in the show or not. I plan on watching the documentaries this week, so hopefully I’ll learn more. They are also doing DNA testing as we speak.

FWIW I meant national media coverage. I wasn’t attempting to imply anyone itt had a bias. Williams is tied to the murders like I said for all intents and purposes he is the Atlanta Child Killer.

If it had been 30 white kids there's no doubt I would have heard about it before. So the racial element is definitely a lot of it.

The fact that Williams was rare in that he is an African American serial killer should make it more high profile you would think.

Definitely racial bias and police wanting to sweep it under the rug bc racial tensions in the area. Plus it would have had much more attention if Williams went to trial for all the murders. Also probably bc it happened right before i was born.

Fwiw, I hadn't heard of BTK until i was college aged and i lived in Wichita growing up. The murders were before i was born or old enough to follow news stories.

Interesting, I just turned on the Investigation Discovery Documentary and literally the first person interviewed just said, "If you did not live here at the time you would not have even known that these crimes occurred."

Also they just said that when they found the bodies in the one area one of them had been shot. That did not come up in the show. It certainly makes it sound less uniform or serial if it is the same killer.

I can’t believe how true this is, but it just is.

Shit, it’d take me 45 minutes to get to those bridges they did their stake-outs at and I had never heard of it until a year ago. Of course, I bring it up to my parents and they know every detail.

As I recall, from listening to the Atlanta Monster podcast, the biggest piece of evidence they tied to Williams was the green carpet fibers that they traced back to a specific distributor that Williams’ parents bought the carpet from. It was something like that. The podcast is worth your time. And the actor that played Williams did a hell of a job.

The premise is definitely the value of black children in America is not very high. Granted this is through the eyes of a 2019 documentarian. That said, had to imagine it is revisionist history. Seems pretty obvious, and when you think about American Indian murders and Hispanic I think it is pretty obvious that they don't get the same level of coverage or resources allocated towards solving these cases.

BTW, rumors at the time, were the KKK or the police were responsible. When you frame this as occurring a decade after the Civil Rights movement it makes even more sense.

I lived in NY and was aware. The question I can't answer is when I became aware. I think that is the key. When the body count started to pile up I'm sure most people were aware, but due to our reptilian brains if we did not personally fear being targeted the details may not have been imprinted like they would be if you considered this a direct threat to your well being or those you considered like you. Race ties into those feelings. For example, obviously the Gainesville murders were memorable for me even though I was a year out of college because it impacted many of my friends and I feared for their lives as they were the target type.

I think the show did a good job of explaining how the Atlanta police did not publicly link all of the individual murders until well into the investigation, so of course we wouldn't have known until the body count really started to pile up.

I mean 40 years ago is a pretty long time to have a very distinct memory.

One other thought is that I recall in the late 70's early 80's my perception was that crime and especially murder was pretty extensive in metropolitan areas like NY and Atlanta, so hearing about a single death here and there was an every day local news story. For the most part we still only had limited networks and news coverage available to us, so unless it was covered on the three major networks during their prime time hours or on one of the news documentary shows like 60 minutes , it just wasn't out there like it would be today. I think Cable was just beginning. There were no news networks and obviously it is pre-internet. I didn't read the newspaper outside of the sports section, because I was about 10.

To be clear, I was just referring to when I was aware of them. I definitely was familiar before Mindhunter but had to remind myself of the details. This may need it's own thread as the moe I watch the documentary it is way more complicated than what was presented in Mindhunter for obvious reasons. To that end while strangling is a common cause, some kids were stabbed, had skull damage or were shot. The kids also disappeared in very different ways, and some very publicly which I found strange. Like one kid disappeared while playing a game of hide and seek with like 39 other kids.

The explanation for why they staked out the bridges was way better in the documentary. The FBI agent lived by a river and he said if you throw something in a river it goes right to the bank and they suspected based on the location that they found the bodies that the killer knew that, so he reasoned that the killer had to be throwing them off a bridge to avoid that.

The stop on the bridge seemed to be well represented in the movie, including not keeping the rope and the other evidence.

Also found this archived article from 1982 that references the agent.

I think he committed many, if not all. More important than the fact that there were no murders after he was arrested was the fact that there were no murders once he was pulled over. Keep in mind the media did not know yet that he was being observed. Also the connection to him being an ambulance chaser and filming crime scenes was much more extensive than presented in the show. The body was found 2 days later just downstream from where the officer heard the splash and thought the splash sounded like a body. The officer was a competitive swimmer so he had some experience knowing what a body sounded like. He also had a rope and gloves in his car. He was pulled over a couple of miles away from the bridge and when asked why he was pulled over he mentioned what we saw in the show. The fibers also matched for nothin he carpet and the German Shepherd and they found a violet acetate bedspread in his room. There was also witnesses who identified him in the area of murders after the fact and one guy who thought it was him and got away from him. I know it is all circumstantial, but just seems enough reason to believe it was more than likely he was the guy. He also failed the polygraph (opposite of the show).

Just finished S2. Can’t say which season I liked best as to me they had two different narratives. Loved S1 for the dive into the criminal minds and development of the study. Loved S2 for trying to put it into action as well as developing stories for the other characters. All I can say is S3 can’t get here soon enough to see how BTK is played out. My only complaint and this is just me is wishing the show had more BTK full episodes.

This was made pretty clear on the show as well. They mentioned there being hundreds of miles of riverbank they'd have to cover which would be impossible and Barney (black FBI guy) said he grew up there and knew if you wanted something to go with the current you had to drop it in the middle which meant they just needed to stake out the bridges.

I don't know if you're unfamiliar with his case but he killed 10 people over the course of nearly 3 decades and wasn't caught until more than a decade after his last kill. The show is within a decade of his last kill now but still about 25 years from his capture. They've gotta stretch his stuff for quite a while unless they plan on doing a fairly sizable time jump at some point.

And just to add my own kinda overall thoughts on season 2... I wish we got repeat visits with guys like Henley and the dude dropping bodies in the Hudson. Manson and Son of Sam were solid one offs (like Speck in season 1) but the two that Wendy interviewed seemed to have more to tell. We got multiple visits with both Kemper and Brudos in season 1 that were very interesting. But I understand they probably had to pick one or the other when it came to repeat appearances by some of their subjects or focusing on Atlanta.

I know what you’re saying with BTK. I knew his entire span was almost 30 years. I meant I’d like to see more of how they portrayed his life on a daily basis, researching a target, and him executing it. We got little teases of it but selfishly I wanted more. I was a criminal sociology major in college so all of this is right up my alley even though I didn’t go that route in life. The study of the mind, social aspects, and how all of that can shape a person will always be fascinating to me.

I can give you a more recent version of this in Baton Rouge,LA. Google search Sean Vincent Gillis & Derrick Todd Lee. Gillis used to kill black prostitutes in north BR. Meanwhile, Lee targeted college aged females near LSU. Both of their timelines overlap and for the longest time BRPD/LSP were looking for a white college age male with a pickup truck. Gillis admitted to killing 8 women. But a lot of people think his number is a lot hire.

Funny enough I have a connection to both serial killers. A friend of mine used to cut his grass back in HS. Gillis specifically told him never to come inside the house and that his pay would be in the mailbox every time. As far as Lee is concerned, an ex taught his son (Derrick Todd Lee Jr.) at Clinton HS.

Watching a 20/20 thing about BTK/his daughter that was suggested to me on Youtube and Rader told a woman, a doctor, who subsequently wrote a book about him and his confession(s) and the doctor said he told her, and this is in her book, that his wife came home earlier than expected one day and caught him doing something like he was doing in that opening scene in the show and that she saw a therapist/counselor about it and was reassured that it wasn't anything to worry about so she just told him to keep that behavior out of the house and not to do it around or in front of her.

The daughter read that in the book and called her mom to ask if it was true and she denied it so could be a lie from BTK but that seems to be where the inspiration for that scene would have come from.

Also watching a documentary right now from 1984 called Murder: No Apparent Motive. It features Kemper and Bundy interviews and FBI profilers talking about the serial killer phenomenon. It seems like one of the source materials for Mindhunter.
