Long story short; my older brother was a bit verbally abusive as kids, I wasn't going to listen to another lecture on how I failed, Charles Barkley called me ugly, I got my autograph when Charles realized the ball was in my court and I call the shots.
Topps didn't go anywhere, they just didn't pay whatever the NFL was asking for the rights to make cards
They counterfeited cards and were sued by mlbpa. Something about fake autographs and/or fake game used memorabilia being used in their cards
What soft sleeves do you guys prefer? I've been using "Cardboard Gold" brand and I think they suck. Their larger sleeves are too wide, when you put it in the top loader it's wavy and makes the card look water damaged.
Just ordered every brand of soft sleeves I could find on ebay. I know they make ones that work right because when people send me cards I've noticed they'll have a thick card in a sleeve that isn't oversized for the top loader. I just don't know what brand they're using. Companies should put serial numbers on the soft sleeves like condoms have.
Why do all the card shops around here only carry that Cardboard Gold shit? Must be the amazing profit margins on penny sleeves. Anyway, I now have BCW, CSP and Ultra Pro all on the way.
Ultra Pro is the way to go. Get some regular sized and thick sized for jersey cards. Nothing bugs me worse than when someone tries to jam a 130 pt. card into a regular size penny sleeve and of course the corners are soft from that.
Annoying indeed. The largest I put in the standard sleeves is the Museum Archival cards which are probably 80-90pt stock (they fit loose in a 100pt top loader). And even those are a bit tight for my liking.
BREAKING NEWS: Cardboard Gold and Ultra-Pro Thick sleeves are the same size. If one of the other two brands I have coming don't work I'm gonna be that guy that stuffs 190pt cards in standard sleeves.
Are there places on social media to buy cards? I don't have social media but I'd sign up if it means there's shit to find. I'm not finding any of the cards I need for the two dozen sets I'm working on. My eye is twitching like a tweaker, if I don't find stuff to buy soon I'm going to start going after more sets. Where's 2019 Immaculate Football? Due date was weeks ago and I can' find any on Ebay. If there's one thing I learned it's you need to go after a set early if you want to complete it, these </99 cards don't come up often enough two years after the fact.
Breaking into Beckett slabs is way harder than PSA, also more risky in regards to damaging the card. I just don't see a point in keeping a 2016 card in a slab if it's only graded an 8.
I feel confident there are fb groups for cards. I didn't have fb until I found out there were sneaker groups with 50k+ people from all over the world. I've been able to find a lot of rare stuff through them. Probably worth looking into.
Has anyone else noticed most players today have really shitty autographs compared to previous generations of players? Back in the 70's and 80's you didn't have many players that had a chicken scratch auto or guys that just wrote their initials. It seems like half of the players in the league today do that. Are we not teaching our kids cursive in school anymore? I don't have kids so I honestly don't know. Are players signing that much more now that they simply don't have time to write their name? I find it hard to believe, at least with Seattle. Football, baseball and basketball players in Seattle use to have to park and walk through a sea of people to get inside the stadium/arena, usually signing autographs as they come and go. Now all the players are sheltered and fans don't have access to them like they did in the past. Take pride in everything you do. I have a fantastic autograph in case you're wondering.
Started working on the UFC sets three weeks ago, the NFL set less than two weeks ago. Had the camera out for something else and I know I haven't posted pics in awhile. Wish I had the time to photograph everything else that has come in the mail the last month. Looking to add more sets to the ever growing list tonight, open to suggestions.
Hey, just realized this, but notice the NFL set has only one newer player in it? Notice the one shitty autograph is of said newer player? Yeah, millennials need to get their shit together.
I wonder if the move away from actual writing and to tech (computers, texting, etc) and the lack of actual practice doing this has played as big a role in the downfall of the autograph as I’d imagine. I know I’m some cases they don’t even teach cursive in elementary school anymore so you’ve gotta think it’s gonna get even worse.
Id bet it has something to do with signing 1000s of little stickers, so they just default to like 2 or 3 letters. Some of dalvin cooks are just DC4, straight up print
I was going to collect the rookie versions of that same year set since they have a similar design but what's the point? The guy with one fucking hand has the best signature out of the group.
Ok I'm done ragging on millennials for the week. But you guys are gonna seriously kill autograph collecting with that shit, which means you can kiss those after career paychecks goodbye because card companies (if still around) aren't going to want to pay you for your squiggle/initials.
Was at the Red Sox v Rays game yesterday and Luis Tiant was there signing. My dad is from Maine and Tiant was one of his favorite players.
Has anyone ever bought anything from Pristine Auction? I was fucking around on there and won a James Harden auto'd jersey for my son for christmas for like $75, and a framed Chipper Jones auto'd jersey for $220
I pulled a redemption card in 1999. Upper deck MVP Ken Griffey Jr. Autographed bat card numbered to 25. I sent it in and had to wait a few months for them to send me the actual card. Meanwhile, the owner of the card shop pulled the glove version a week later and sold the redemption card for $1800. By the time I got the card the beckett value dropped from $3000 to $1500. I was 13 and certain Griffey was going to break all the home run records. Sadly, that didn't happen. No idea what it's worth now, but I don't think I would do that again.
I have. The jerseys are fine but a lot of times they are knockoffs from China and not the real thing if it matters to you. The backs look right but the fronts are fucky
I imagine I'll frame it for him so I'm not too worried about the front, but thats good to know, thank you.
actually showed these pics to my coworker under the preface that you’re pissed off about signatures. You’re not wrong, but I do get a chuckle out of your frustrations
Yeah because if I'm young and wealthy sitting around cranking out a legible signature a few thousand times is how I want to spend my down time
So my buy every 'thick' penny sleeve available to solve the oversized sleeve wrinkle issue failed. I will now buy every 'standard' penny sleeve out there to see if any are oversized enough that I can cram a 130pt card in it. I'll keep you guys posted since I know you're losing sleep over this problem.

You're the guy that I cuss at when I buy a card off ebay then lol. Nothing bugs me worse than the 130 pt. card that got stuffed into a regular penny and now has 2 soft bottom corners.
Just realized something... all these soft sleeves I'm buying might not be too wide, the top loaders I put them in might be too narrow.
I've been a PSA fanboy in the past but my faith in them is dwindling. I sent a Regular order (est. 25 business days) that was accepted by them on 7/29. It has now been 48 business days and it isn't even finished yet. It's ridiculous. Not to mention all the shit they're caught up in with the trimmed cards. If they didn't add 2-3x value of a raw card I'd be finding other grading companies. SGC is legit but they just don't carry the clout that PSA does on the secondary market.
fyi the biggest sneaker resell site is now doing sports cards too. https://stockx.com/collectibles Seller lists an asking price Buyer can buy for low ask or make "high offer" Buyer and seller go back and forth until seller accepts offer or buyer just buys it Seller gets UPS label immediately They ship within 48 hours Product goes to one of their facilities It's verified to be authentic Seller is paid, minus fees StockX ships to buyer If buyer has an issue, they deal with StockX. Seller is out of it as soon as StockX deems their item authentic. They started 2 years ago doing shoes. Recently got evaluated at $1b lol. Dan Gilbert, the Quicken Loans guy that owns the Cavs, he owns it.
They do, but the sleeves they make for them are so goddamn wide it ripples inside the toploader because it's touching both sides east/west.
The whole trimming debacle has me full blown anti-grading now. I'm even cracking open graded cards, at least the autos I buy for sets that aren't 9.5/10.
Scored a shitload of stuff for sets today, I'd have more of a boner about if it weren't for the fucking Yankees putting a dampening on the day. Everyone wants Astros pitching vs Nats pitching, nobody wants to see the fucking Yankees. Nobody that matters at least.
