"J'den becomes back-to-back champ, rare in american history" ....not THAT rare. 3 guys on the current team have done it and Dake is about to make it 4
About to get onto a flight. If anyone wants to post some Akgul-Petriashvili action that would be swell.
Petriashvili does it, again. Only guy to sweep the quad, doing it at 125 with a hammer like Akgul on the other side is damn impressive. Does anyone else think, as great as Snyder is, that if J'den goes up to 97 for the trials that he's the favorite there? It's tough, because it's a non-Olympic weight, but the way J'den has been wrestling...
Didn't get to watch Snyder this tournament but everything about him seems to have plateaued in recent years while J'Den just seemingly keeps getting better and better. Think you gotta take competition into account and I just don't know enough but on the surface, don't think Snyder or Taylor want any piece of J'Den next year.
Kid Dynamite 2x world champ. Wins 4-2 but probably the worst I've seen him wrestle. Says a lot about how good he is.
He was clearly nowhere near his best but nobody at 79kg was touching him anyway. Impressive. Dake and Cox coming back into the mix for Olympic spots is going to be fun, they've dominated the 'JV' weights(neither has taken a real loss in well over a year) but now have to beat out world and Olympic champs at the big time weights.
Also, there is currently a bronze-medal match, at an Olympic weight, between Colombia and Switzerland. Excellent work UWW
Disappointing to miss out on Yazdani, but probably a good thing for the kid Punia to have to default. No reason to get whipped when it's not happening for you. Current, 2019 season, P4P rankings(overall career taken into account, but if they missed the 2019 World Championships, they aren't counted). 1. Sadulaev 2. Yazdanicharati - Honestly, I thought it was a bit aggressive having DT in this spot last year... not now. DT was amazing last year and Yazdani kills everyone besides DT 3. Sidakov 4. Petriashvili - Only guy to sweep the quad and Taha Akgul is a helluva opponent to do that against. 6 straight between them 5. Rashidov - Maybe should have lost his first match but he took care of business against the rest of the field 6. Uguev - Two in a row at a deep weight 7. J'Den Cox - Honestly, I think he might be better than this but 92kg is so much weaker it has to count in these fake rankings 8. Dake - Same thing, he's clearly better than everyone at 79(hell, Dieringer was his closest competition the last year) 9. Burroughs - First non-champ, brutal losses to Sidakov the last 2 years. 10. Aliyev - Protest spot for now, not sure who to put 10th as neither Baev or Lomtadze has the resume for that.
Gigantic bomb dropped on FRL just now: Willie just said that Jordan Burroughs is NOT retiring after 2020. Usually I'd chalk this up to BS because Willie sucks, but he's childhood best friends with Bryan Snyder and spent the last two weeks in Nur Sultan.
A mini bomb is that DG Kerkvliet is not redshirting and will be wrestling from the get-go. What that tells me is that he's beating down on Singletary in the room. Said he weighs 235 now and trying to get up to 250.
If Dake beats him at Olympic Trials (not saying it happens), he's going to keep going? I guess he assumes Dake goes back to 79kg for worlds the following year.
How many events will there be where the top guys will be all wrestling each other as they cram into the Olympic weights?
There will be a lot of strong fields. I'm guessing we start to see top competitors moving to olympic weights starting at the Alans in November, which should be Russian-heavy. The World Cup is obviously a little different but that always has insane matchups. Think that's december. We'll see a lot of guys at Olympic weights at the Yarygin in January, which is known as the toughest tournament in the world for a reason. Continental Championships in February (Euro and Asian) will be very strong. All the Continental OG qualifiers in March will be hotly contested obviously. World OG qualifier is end of April/beginning of May and we know some big names will still be unqualified. Domestically, the Farrell in November and the Schultz in January should get decent fields as guys are looking to qualify for trials.
Graduate student Stevan Micic, fifth-year seniors Myles Amine and Logan Massa and senior/junior Kanen Storr of the University of Michigan wrestling team will take Olympic redshirts during the 2019-20 season, head coach Sean Bormet announced Tuesday (Oct. 1).
I think I predict that Michigan takes the next step every year and they haven't quite done that yet, but this really sets up Michigan for 2021. 125: Drew Mattin/Kurt McHenry 133: Stevan Micic 141: Joey Silva 149: Kanen Storr 157: Will Lewan 165: Logan Massa 174: Myles Amine 184: Jelani Embree 197: Andrew Davison/Gaige Garcia/?? 285: Mason Parris 197 is a weak spot but that's potentially 9 all americans.
Paddy Gallagher says he will go to a big ten school and lists his top 5 as Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. I think it comes down to Iowa and Ohio State with Iowa being his eventual destination. In my opinion he's the #2 or #3 guy in the c/o 2021. Only kid I'd take ahead of him for sure is Facundo. I'm really high on future OK State commit Kyle Haas who I see competing for National Titles. I think I'd take Gallagher over Richie Figs at this point. This weekend at WNO he's wrestling Keegan O'Toole in the greatest Irish high school wrestling match of all time.
. Massa and Storr will look to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, scheduled for April 4-5, 2020, in State College, Pennsylvania.
I literally know nothing about grappling but looking forward to this crazy ripped guy taking on Pat Downey and hopefully kicking his ass
I know next to nothing about wrestling, so just asking. Wasn’t sure where the sport was with those type of things. I’ve only really followed things closely the last two years since moving to Blacksburg and being able to go to matches.
Singlets are really stupid and there's no reason for kids to be wearing them. Studies have shown that it curtails participation in the sport, and most wrestlers prefer non-baggy shorts and a fitted shirt anyway.
I like this Vasquez kid. Incredible from neutral, nothing from bottom. Someone get Tom Ryan on the phone.
Echemendia supplies more evidence for what we already knew: he's the real deal. Will be interesting to see him transition to folkstyle but I think the kid is a high AA at ISU.
having Sam Herring on the call when probably 2% of their audience knows who he is..interesting call Flo
Congrats Bucs. Smart move not wanting an Iowa situation with Kirk and Snyder in the same room. Toms forward thinking, as always, is a step ahead.
Guys I'm so pumped to cheer for Nittany Lion Kyle in the Olympic trials. He must be pumped to be wrestling in front of his home crowd!
If any of you bucs need someone to talk to due to this traumatic event please message me. It's okay to ask for help.
