So, I've never been to any of the top tier restaurants around town before. I'm looking for a good date night spot on a Thursday, which one is going to be the best overall experience?
Also Cafe DuPont is a good one I don't see mentioned on here often. I also appreciate that it's in the heart of the city.
If you’re looking for a slightly less formal dining experience without compromising the cuisine, Bettola is top tier. I love that place.
this is an incredible incredible restaurant, but last time I was there they were blasting ride of the Valkyrie hopefully that was a one off
Love the high-end white table cloth experiences at Highlands and Hot and Hot, never disappointed. But I always have the most fun/enjoyable experiences at the more casual cafe type places that are still putting out stellar food. Ollie Irene Chez Fon Fon Bottega Cafe Gianmarcos and Bettola for Italian.
I know I’ve said it before but Ollie Irene blows me away everytime. Best grouper dish I’ve ever had when I went a couple of weeks ago.
Still haven’t tried Automatic. Been dying to go, but my wife doesn’t really care for seafood so that causes issues for me.
Has anyone tried Snapper Grabbers in Vestavia? I overheard some couple sitting behind me tonight going on and on about how great it was. They seemed like serial exaggerators.
So this Cupcake story is a tragedy. It seems to be a foregone conclusion that she was trafficked and they will never find her. Unreal.
I can’t recall having more fun at a Birmingham sporting event. Great atmosphere, crowd was into it. The play was crisp and lots of talent. High drama, playoffs on the line. Team completely sold out, we played 10 on 11 for the majority of the game. Legion scored in extra time at the end of the first half that the refs took off the board for what looked like a phantom offsides. Should of been 3-1. Crazy intense game, it was awesome. Regular season finale, to clinch 1 of 2 remaining playoff spots, is at home this Sunday @ 4:30 against 1st place Pittsburgh (unbeaten in their last 10). Hammer down.
Brookie opening up a "high end tequila bar" between pepper place and Lakeview on 4th. I'm going to have to get less old man ish and check out these new spots.
In town for a wedding this weekend, staying on 1st Ave N. How’s Ovenbird for a Friday night dinner? Any other recs close by?
Basically anything worth a shit is less than 5 minute uber from there, what are you interested in post dinner? Also I might have misunderstood, if you are looking for dinner alternatives I love El Barrio and Bamboo on 2nd, will both have a wait but plenty of bars nearby and they will call your cell when the table is ready.
We’ve got a welcome party at 8, so we were really just looking for somewhere close by where we could have a few drinks and small plates beforehand.
The restaurant part is great. I went there for lunch on Friday and was very pleasantly surprised. The market part is fine, but more expensive than Sexton’s.
Ovenbird is great for a group because it's primarily small plates. It gets expensive quick for just two. Edit: I read your follow up post. It'll definitely server your purposes.
Looking forward to making my first Trim Tab visit Saturday. Not that it will change my plans, but do they have TVs?
Their specialty is hazy IPAs. They released a new one last week and are releasing another this Friday so good timing.
Not sure if it’s common knowledge, but the former shitty On Tap in Lakeview is going to be a Purple Onion with a drive thru and Im not sure how I feel about it yet.
We get distribution in Atlanta, so I get pretty much everything here except for the limited bottle releases. I think they’re as good as anyone in GA, and certainly among the best in the deep south. They kill it with the hazy ipas and fruited sours, which happen to be my two favorite styles.
I don't dislike Purple Onion but would much rather have another place like On Tap for my grungey sports bar needs.
Is it really? I heard that all of the Billy's crew ended up there, which would not be a good thing for its customer service... On a semi-related note, I ate at Bobby Carl's, the new place in English Village, last night. I was very impressed. It's a solid, reasonably-priced restaurant that's not Mexican, Pizza, or BBQ. https://www.villagelivingonline.com/business/bobby-carls-table-coming-to-english-village/
I went last week and liked it. Good menu, nice and new building, didn't recognize any Billy's staff. Nice bourbon bar/selection upstairs I think, too. As of two weeks ago, the Billy's staff members I spoke with were still planning to find a new location to move into.
We have to move in a few years for a better school district and Liberty Park has been on the radar. Does anybody live out there? I wonder if it feels too far out.
I worked at Old Overton one summer in college commuting from BSC. Great experience but I might as well of driven to Tuscaloosa.
