tongue lashing and a lecture on how important timeliness is. Though I did see a judge hold an attorney in contempt because she was late to court 5x in a row
What happened to the kid? zero tolerance is pretty clear, zero means zero. It might be wise to not have a zero tolerance policy though. The issue here is very clearly not that he "fought back" against a racial slur. It's that he repeated the racial slur in that fight. Had he said don't call me that, or don't call me the N-word, the story is a racist kid gets expelled (hopefully?). my daughter got in trouble in kindergarten. She explained it was a misunderstanding, because "Jonah said shit, but I didn't say shit because I know shit is a bad word, so I don't ever ever say shit. Jonah said shit, not me, and all I did was tell the teacher that Jonah said shit."
The kid who said it was black himself and the policy is a zero tolerance policy for staff members. You should probably read the article because it explains the situation and the grievance that the fired security guard has, also reading what’s being discussed is just a smart thing to do.
honest question, is it racist for a black person to call a black person the n word?? The confusion here seems to be what zero means. It seems like simply reinforcing that zero means zero; never, not in any situation, not in any context can any student or staff member use a racial slur. Not in a derogatory manner, not if someone calls you a racial slur and you'd like them to stop, not if you need a pencil, never.
The article does not tell me if it's racist for a black person to call a black person the n word. I thought it was. I could be wrong. I'm certain your answer will be wrong, and will call me a racist. The article tells me there is a zero tolerance policy on racial slurs, then people being confused and upset when someone who said a racial slur is fired because in their opinion a tolerance level greater than zero should be considered in this case based on the context. The article indicates that people are not aware of how much "zero" is.
riner is the literal personification of the meme that the only thing some white people care about is why they can't say the n word
OMG that's exactly what I'm saying!!!! I want to say the n word so bad, and this example of a black kid saying the n word to a black staff member, then the black staff member repeating it and asking the kid not to call him that and being fired perfectly illustrates that. /sarcasm (for those about to be shocked that I just admitted to wanting to say the n word)
Who is "they"? The school district is advocating that he be fired for using a racial slur because of a zero tolerance policy in place for that, and similar words. Outrage is growing over the firing, with many advocating that he should not have been fired. There is "controversy" at the school over the firing. And it's "absolutely insane" that he was fired, many including the man who was fired, saying that context should be considered, despite a "zero tolerance" policy.
I wrote that on Friday but..... I think I was asking you what TMB was arguing ITT (others against you).
That's always tricky because everyone has a different angle, I don't think there is a single unified argument. I think some are def arguing that it's a bad firing, while others may not. Mister talks in circles and refuses to answer questions, which makes it even more difficult. what's your opinion?
He didn’t read the article and asked questions that are clearly answered in the article, but rather than admitting that he didn’t read the article he reverted back to his why can blacks use the n-word but whites can’t bullshit.
I read the article. I want to know if you think a black person calling a black person the n word is racist. Do you? I don't give a flying fuck about white people not being "allowed" to use the n word.
I did not read the article, but if the employee was running around saying the n word, despite being black, he deserves to be fired (ie their zero tolerance policy). If he was merely explaining what happened in his incident, like say how he would if in court, then he does not need to be fired.
I'll summarize: a student called this employee a bitch ass n*. The employee responded don't call that, stop calling me that, don't call me a n* fired for saying the n-word, under the zero tolerance policy.
I'm not sure the intent of "zero tolerance" is to prevent an employee from standing up to racism or explaining why he was offended. We weren't there so it probably isn't as simple/clear as we think. There is an argument to be made on both sides. Crepes posted the actual tweet in defense of the employee and then others defended the firing. You side tracked the convo with your "honest question" though. I think the exact facts/context (apparently an employee screaming the n word in front of other students) is what matters the most. He knew not to repeat it.
My impression of zero is that it means zero. Not in any circumstance should racial slurs be used. When the policy is zero tolerance, intent seems clear; it's never to be used. Allowing the use of a racial slur based on a circumstance would be a tolerance level of greater than zero. And that was my initial response. That push-back against a zero tolerance policy, and citing the circumstances in which the n word was used, exhibit a fundamental misunderstanding of what zero tolerance means. I also asked what happened to the "racist" kid. Which ultimately prompted the question: Is it's racist for a black person to call another black person the n word? I'm curious, do you think that's racist?
also, neither standing up to racism nor explaining being offended require anyone to repeat the offensive word.
well, if he went into the principal office and said "you need to know that I was just called a n..." then he doesn't deserve to be fired. It is essentially a zero tolerance policy in regards to an open/public setting. And yes, any use of a racist word is inherently racist, regardless of who uses it. I know the context of the word has evolved. It gets used to replace the word 'friend' by some, but that doesn't replace the word's history. It shouldn't be used. It needs to die off. I'd like to assume we all agree on that.
that's fine, but my point stands. if the police came to his campus to take a statement down, the employee could say "n word" in his statement, but if by chance he directly quoted the kid in effort for accuracy, the employee doesn't deserve to be fired. at some point common sense and reasonableness has to prevail over strict interpretation of zero tolerance.
fwiw I used to have the same stance as you. I talked about it with my best friend and he got me to see if from his/their view. They took it and made it their own. Who am I to say they can't use it? My biggest struggle was with a young white kid that grows up hearing it in every song they listen to and hearing it from black friends. I fully agree the kid shouldn't use it but I also completely understand them thinking it's ok bc it's used so freely, especially in music.
You talking to these guys like you are having a discussion. They don't have, and never have had, any interest in discussing the issues you want to discuss. I'm not sure why you continue to try to get responses from stones.
People who don't want to listen, discuss with you? I'm not sure there is a better word. Maybe disinterested rocks? How would you describe your interactions with riner?
I would describe my interactions with Riner as a circle, where he states some bullshit, evidence is provided that contradicts it and he ignores it and continues to spout the same racist bullshit. Feel free to defend someone who believes it’s acceptable to profile blacks and Latinos, that says a lot more about you than it says about me.
There it is. That healthy dose of projection which is your sop. I'm not defending nor attacking riner. Just saying, he thinks he's having a conversation/debate. Maybe at some point in the distant past that was true but now it isn't. He will either purposely (or not) fail to understand a point you think is obvious. You will attribute the worst possible motive. Rinse and repeat. It's pointless. I'd put you both on ignore but both of you occasionally say something of value so I'm hoping that we can riner to just give up.
