Had a thought today....anyone down to share their cellars here? Easy to pull and post if you have cellar tracker. Could drive some good discussion I think

I'm trying to get like you, fam.

I live in a Manhattan apartment so storage is limited for now (especially with a nine-month old). I tend to lean Rhone Valley, and rarely buy several bottles of same wine (again, due to storage). Otherwise I typically like to explore and probably drink some too early as I'm really only about 3-4 years into true appreciation. I have another 15-20 bottles back home in Alabama as well, but don't have them in CT right now. Here's what I am sitting on right now, cheap stuff and all (about 50 bottles)

I lost my job in the recession when my company shut down my department. I had become hooked on going to nice restaurants and having sales people that were more knowledgeable than myself ordering for the table. So once I had a new job I started learning more and buying things to cellar in 2009-10 (2007 vintage). I lived in a condo and progressed from a couple wine racks to a wine refrigerator and then external storage at a local store. We moved in to a house and built a cellar when we remodeled the basement. The cellar holds about 4-5 years of our consumption so I mostly buy things in 2-3 bottle increments and leave it for 2-3 years or longer before starting to consume (depending on what it is).

I'm a big fan of rhone varietals (primarily WA or the actual Rhone), Pinot (Burgundy & Oregon primarily) and Cab (Napa and to a lesser extent BDX & WA in my cellar). I like Italian and Spanish wines as well but there can be more variance and I end up with less in my cellar.

    That is my story.

That's awesome. I'm still figuring out what I like, love, and will pay up to keep. I've thought about getting some off-site storage here, but given the cost and the fact that I'm probably not in NYC for that much longer, I think I'll probably keep around the levels I have now.

Use a mail order service called Grapes: The Wine Company based out of White Plains that is a top buyer in the area. They send several daily emails for consistently great selections out of their warehouse/store at great prices, and free delivery into the city. Have also recently joined Garagiste out of WA but havent gotten any shipments yet.

We buy a bunch direct from wineries that we've visited which is a primary reason we have more US than foreign. Otherwise I buy primarily from a local store, Full Pull Wines in Seattle (great access to WA wines I can't get here) and JJ Buckley out of Oakland that I use for imports.

Flying to Napa tomorrow for my sister's wedding and fly back Monday morning. I've got time for two vineyard tastings Friday, maybe a tasting room or two in downtown Napa on Saturday, and another vineyard on Sunday.

I didn't know you needed a reservation so far in advance for a lot of them (Stag's Leap, Opus One, Quintessa, etc.) but here's what I have so far. Any recommendations for the open spots or thoughts on what I have?

    Friday
10:30 AM - Round Pond estate tasting
12:00 PM - Robert Mondavi tour and tasting

    Saturday
[Open - staying at Silverado golf course, any good tasting rooms close by?]

    Sunday
    12-2 PM - Brunch at V Sattui
2 PM - Open after this. Saw Silver Oak can do walk in tastings? Any other recs?

    I can’t recommend Darioush enough.

State of the art tasting room and delicious wines. They make probably my favorite cabernet.

The owner had the architects recreate an ancient building in the city of Persepolis (one of the capitals of the Persian Empire) as the main winery/tasting room. Looks like ancient ruins, thought it was very cool.

Chateau Montelena is a historic vineyard. (35 min drive) but it will put you close to spring mountain. Tasting is commercialized, but beautiful property you can walk around

Grgich Hills is about 20 min away.

Monticello vineyards is close (8 min drive). I’ve been twice and have a good relationship with the owner. They’re a small producer, but great hospitality and great wine.

If you are going to be up there for brunch, I would recommend going to Charter Oak instead of V Sattui if you can.

Some wineries in that area I like are Cain, Stony Hill, Spottswoode, and Corrison winery.

If you do check out Darioush, it may be fun to follow up with it’s sister winery, Ashes and Diamonds.

Round Pond is pretty good. View is probably better than the wine. Olive oil is great. Food is pretty good too.

My experience was probably dampened by the fact that we were in a hurry to get to silver oak release party.

Haha unfortunately V. Sattui is the one we *have* to go to - my sister and fiance/husband booked the big family brunch there on Sunday, so I'm locked in.

Sounds like I'll be wanting to finish up somewhere else Sunday afternoon though.

I received a shipment of wine today. I was putting bottles away and all of a sudden about 5 of them started slipping forward and falling neck first. As they fell, they bumped others and those started leaning or falling. I was fortunate they were only 3 feet above the floor and I was able to break their fall with my lap. From what I can tell, only one bottle was damaged with just a small crack in the neck/shoulder area. It looks like I'll be drinking 2014 De Ponte Cellars Estate Pinot tomorrow.

In Washington-Their Syrah is better but I love everything Gramercy Cellars does and the cab is 60-ish. Andrew Will makes some great cab/merlot blends that are in that $80-100 range. Betz is really good around that too. Quilceda Creek CVR can also be excellent (although it’s worth paying up for the main bottling). Pepper Bridge, L’Ecole (Ferguson), Spring Valley Vineyard (Uriah, Frederick or Derby) are all really good and closer to $50 than $100 too.

There is a bunch of really good Washington cabs at like $25-40 that drink like $50-75 Napa. Names that come to mind are Tulpen, and Saviah.

I can look later on stuff I like in Napa because I’m not sure on price creep. Knights Valley tends to be pretty damn good AVA in Sonoma and would likely be under $100.

Stylistically, I like understated, balanced wines that go well with food more than the bigger wines. So Caymus, Silver Oak, etc have their place but I don’t really buy them. I’d rather have some earth, pencil lead and herbal notes to go with fruit rather than fruit dominant.

Pencil lead/graphite is a tasting note I struggled for years to put my finger on. It came across in a lot of high end wines that I really enjoyed but couldn’t quite describe when looking for others. Was at a nice tasting about 5 years ago that had several vintages of Insignia and the host used pencil lead in describing one in particular and it hit me. One of my favorite tasting notes to find now.
