Not an atheist. Went to one of his Sunday Services last month - it was dope. Jesus Is King is marginal at best.
I'm still listening to it. I like the mix of genres. My one problem is the message...not that I'm anti-Christian, but more like I'm not sure Kanye's intentions with all this. Do we take him at his word or do we figure this is some kind of right wing propaganda
I think his mental illness has just taken the form of religious fixation for now. He'll move on in a few months, as he did from movement conservatism.
Gospel plays a huge part in the history of black music though. There have been gospel records that were hits on the radio. The sound/aesthetic seems on brand for what Kanye's always done with creating appealing fusions of styles and exploring black culture. It's just the message that's questionable, even though he's had "Jesus Walks" etc before
I’m not ever mad at the use of god or spiritually in music and often times quite enjoy it even though I’m an atheist. Chances verse in Ultralight Beam, Kendricks DAMN album are a couple of examples of things I’d not willing to part with musically speaking. Full disclosure, I haven’t listened to this album but unlike most people I’m more certain that Kanye is approaching this from a business level rather than doing this from a place of mental illness. As a solo artist, he hasn’t made music that appeals to the common hip hop fan since MBDTF. I feel like he’s trying to appeal to the Christian conservative and if the old white folks on my Facebook feed sharing various stories of his turn around to Jesus have a say in it, he’s doing a good job. I’m ok with god in my music, I just don’t want it from the current Kanye West
I like the album a lot. It's beautifully produced. But, the lyrics are pretty awful for the most part.
Yup, he’s just working the grift on this album. Tons of magatard Christians are stanning for him on social media. edit-the album also sucks donkey balls
This. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus feels like a lazy way of making Christian music. He’s an artist and storyteller. Make a lyrical parable. Jesus Walks could’ve been the best song on this album.
First thing I did after listening to Jesus is King is out on Daytona. Kinda annoyed with Push for not coming with anything new after he said he probably needed to be dropping more often in today’s climate.
kids see ghosts was incredible and on par with some of his best work. daytona was also very strong. my working hypothesis is when he works with someone else on a project who can tell him no he is much better than his solo stuff where he goes full weirdo and gets way off the rails.
I’m mean I haven’t been a Kanye fan since MBDTF but he isn’t the first rapper (or black person) to unironically don the confederate flag as “taking the symbol back.” Not sure why we need to dredge this up from 2013 as a reason to be Team Fuck Kanye in a sea of very good (and recent) reasons to be Team Fuck Kanye.
I forgot about that Luda outfit. I’m confident if you talked to these 2, they would have some self reflection and good insight since both are from the south. Kanye, we know, would not.
