This was my first Graphic Novel. I liked the story, but cant say I enjoyed the format. Id rather just get it in a novel format. it was kind of hard to read. Maybe reading it on a iPad had something to do w that. I was confused why it was SO revered but then I read a couple pieces on it and how it broke the mold of traditional comic books. So this was the first comic that had anti heros and more heavy storylines and not just the BOOM! POW! light story telling? Is that correct?
It was the first GN I read as well and I was 22 and had never touched a comic. Blew my mind. Not just the story that kept me completely engaged with social commentary and amazing characters but Gibbons artwork was just a pleasure to look at. Saying this book was special because it broke the “boom! pow!” Mold is hella insulting imo
Graphic novels are usually a collection of periodic comic book issues combined to tell one long story arc. I get what you are trying to say Truman but to answer your question, the answer is no.
First graphic novel as well. I read it in college at the height of gritty comic book movies and was floored by themes and storytelling. It’s not dark for darkness’ sake, if you know what I mean. I’ve been jacked for the show since Lindelof was announced and the pilot delivered and then some.
I didnt mean to be insulting or belittling. I just took that from a few things I read on it. That basically it was the first comic to have heavy consequences and actual deaths. The characters had more depth to them. Previously, the henchmen of the main bad guys, just got punched, never died. Everything always ended up being a happy ending ect. That it started the gritty comic book genre ect like Clown Baby said
I get what your saying wrt consequence but I just feel like it’s so much more than that on a thematic and atmospheric level. The book itself blew the doors open for me when it comes to the medium and I’ve consumed basically everything worth mentioning and then some. Even still, watchmen sits firmly at the top for me. That first read was such a ride and one that I’ve went on very few times across all entertainment media.
the Tales of the Black Freighter side story being incorporated blew my fucking mind. Apparently there's a cut of the movie that has the scenes split up and woven in...I should probably find that
I watched that 12 part motion graphic novel series show and thought it was really good. So bring on the show.
Just saw a passing tweet about the Seventh Kalvary and Custer and I feel dumb not putting that together right away.
just finished. really enjoyed it. now I want to watch the pilot again. it took me a while to get used to different stories unfolding at once sometimes in the same frames, but once I did I really like how they weaves everything together. still don’t understand the shrimp.
Spoiler I am thinking it is some kind of fallout from the squid attack, or its continued attacks to prove Veidt isn’t really dead
Spoiler Ozymadias’ attack on NYC was the huge squid he incubated in Antarctica. The tiny shrimp I think are actually tiny squids as a nod to that. I too was a little confused w what the attack was because it’s really just shown in a pretty small square in the comic
Spoiler: Watchmen GN spoiler The squid rain in the pilot is a probable nod to the comics where Veidt teleported the fake alien squid to Times Square killing 3 million people but unifying the world thus preventing all out nuclear war. The movie adaptation changed the squid part by replacing the alien squid with making it look like Dr. Manhattan went rogue
So I haven’t paid much attention to this thread beyond the last page or so, so my apologies if discussed, but book readers, a question on a theory: Spoiler Lou Gosset is Hooded Justice, right?
Spoiler I buy it because of the noose H.J. wore. It certainly has relevance if we are to believe he was alive during the Tulsa Race Riots. Also, the infatuation with lifting 200 lbs.
Spoiler After thinking about it a little this could be a feasible theory. HJ was the OG masked hero in the WM universe. Initially I thought the ages didn’t synch up (think HJ made his first appearance in ‘36 which would make him pushing 100 yrs. old. Combine that with the fact he was depicted as being white in the movie...I don’t know, maybe?
Spoiler It would be such a brilliant origin story, especially because in the novel it’s rumored that H.J. is German. Talk about a 180.
pez is known for his crazy theories. Pretty sure he was the architect of the “Seantrel Henderson is Blue” theory
Nope it’s all over Spoiler theory discussion https://www.esquire.com/entertainme...-jr-old-wheelchair-man-will-reeves-explained/
few things I noticed on rewatch after reading. most were probably obvious. and I’m sure others I missed. Spoiler Regina King born in Vietnam during the war when we know the Comedian and Dr. Manhattan among others were there. Liberal Redford has seemed to take the place of Reagan. ad for Minutemen show with Hooded Justice bus ad going by right before we meet Louis Gossett. Giant Squid conspiracy mention in the pod. the aircraft Judd is in is Archie or a modernized version Dollar Bill poster in the 7th Cavalry house. Cyanide capsule like Veidt slipped his assassin. Veidt was celebrating the anniversary of him “saving the world”. The watch and Watchmaker’s Son play were both nods to Dr. Manhattan. I’m guessing that’s going to tie in with whatever scheme unfolds. they showed all the Minutemen on the tv but again Hooded Justice was the one most prominently featured. like I said, nothing earth shattering and I probably missed others but I just figured I’d list them out.
The fact that there’s a Buick Grand National featured just makes this show even better. A young Love Tractor lusted after that car back in the day.
I’m interested to know who Jim Beaver (guy on porch from Deadwood and Justified) is considering that appears Angela’s kids are her former partner’s.
And I’m glad they brought back Lou Gossett’s dad for the opening scene. Don’t know that actor but he was excellent during the massacre scene last week.
I love the fact he’s playing the shows equivalent to the newsstand guy from the book. Shows hitting all the right notes
So clearly LGJ is Hooded Justice modeled after the sheriff in the movie from the cold open. Black Lawman dispatching corrupt lawman (Judd, Duh) and whatnot. Wondering if the baby saved in the Ep1 open is Regina King’s grandmother as well
Hi guys just checking in haven’t watched tonight yet makes me so happy to see people reading the book ITT. I lent a coworker my copy last week and he’s loving it.
