Inspired by Truman ’s HP thread...which I wish I’d mimicked when I read the series for the first time over the past few months. He mentioned this series might be a good one to do the same with, as quite a few TMBers read and loved it. Some expectations. I read in chunks on the weeks I travel. At home, I don’t get much time, so if I stay at the rate I had for HP, I expect the first trilogy to take a couple months. Openly discussing spoilers and I’m going to try and post my thoughts on upcoming events as a I read so we can all enjoy me being hilariously wrong. Enjoy!
Chapters 1-3 that opening tho “...none of them will survive” Excellent prologue. Eo sounds cute already and aware of the politics beyond what Darrow understands. “...she could be a Gold...” “letting” family members be the ones to pull the feet of their hanged loved ones is gangster af Uncle is a drunken bitch. Darrow that young buck, trying to get the Laurel. Knew as hyped as he was, no way they were going to get that shit. Still a major gut punch. Whats’s Eo’s surprise?
Chapter 4: definitely more to Eo than a dream. something going to happen to her to fuel this? Someone had Reds build a garden but no one knows it’s there? Someone at the end of the tunnel, shits about to go down. Chapter 5: Eo about to hang already?!? She knows this is the only way to get Darrow to fight lash scene is brutal making even the uncle whip Darrow is more coldblooded Gold shit Chapter 6: The early comparisons to Hunger Games are striking but the first-person view make this far more harrowing Darrow, you lovable dummy, listen to Eo Who hacked the HC to show her death over and over? Uncle definitely slipped him something in the flask. How they gonna hang the main character 6 chapters in?!? Part Two is called Reborn. Oh... Chapter 7-9: Is Dancer his dad? Is his dad Ares?!? Nope and probably not. I like Harmony. Hard to remember a lot of these are just kids. there’s a city?!? Those lying, gold bastards! I have a feeling the shit they’re mining wasn’t solely for the purpose of colonizing Mars. What’s its real use? Oh, colonizing the entire galaxy. 700 fucking years? These dudes is for real slaves. Darrow is for real pissed. Let’s get murdering some soft colored fucks. Chapter 10: dafuq is The Carving? Painting an excellent world in this chapter. Darrow blushing by nudity and the pink light district got me laughing i guess the explanation of colonizing worlds all over the place tells why there are so many alien creatures. Okay...this Red about to be a Gold Chapter 11: Okay, like actually become a Gold. This shit is serious. They want Darrow to be real big time. If this shit ends with him just siding with the Golds, I’m gonna be pissed. I want a lot of blood. Chapter 12: The Carving was intense. Mickey is a good, complex character. A little Matrix-y in this chapter. Lots of similarities in the story so far. Think that’s it for tonight. Plane just landed and that’s about 25% of the first book. Solid suggest, Truman
Non-reading note: I'm always on the fence when a writer decides to introduce a world-centered vocabulary. So far, Brown has done a good job of letting context clues tell you what things that special words in this world are. I particularly love Uncle's use of bloodydamn.
So I failed miserably at this. Went on vacation for a week and did not reading through about 10/15. When I came back, the reading went too fast for me to be bothered taking notes. Was about 50% through the first book at last update. Finished the series last night after about 10 days since I picked it back up. Truman I don't know how you did it for the HP series - you genuinely earned all those likes because I just couldn't keep notes at the pace these books beg you to read at
lol. This series is so fast paced it would be really hard to put it down to take notes. I did HP over the summer which is extremely slow time of year for me. So I just had my laptop up as I read and typed up shit. I dont think it Red Rising would be as easy to do. Good job, good effort ya pixie. When you say series - The first trilogy, or did you read Iron Gold and Dark Ages too?
Finished the first trilogy last night. Went ahead and downloaded Iron Gold but haven't started. The excerpt at the end of Morning Star is, I assume, the first chapter of Iron Gold...with Lysander and Cassius. If the usual cast is missing, it will take me a few days to get hyped about jumping back in but I trust Brown's storytelling to reel me back in eventually.
