I don't like the new album, so also not willing to sit through all those bad songs to hear the 5 or 6 decent songs he will perform. And I'm gonna see Tyler at sub 3k venues in Dec and Feb, no reason to go to an arena and see the same show, with longer more expensive beer lines, with terrible acoustics, with likely a terrible crowd
Thomas Wolfe Ashville, NC 2015 was the last time I saw Sturg. I kinda had a feeling at that show that was the last time I'd see him live. Was super jammy and seemed to be headed in a weird direction. Here we are. I'll never forgive him for firing Lil Joe also.
Naw. He just got weird, as did his music. Probably was always weird honestly. He completely shit on Kevin Black and Lil Joe. I did have a problem with that. I have bought all his albums, seen him live 4 or 5 times. I'm just not gonna go see him on this arena tour, because I hate arena shows. I'd go see him again in a big theater, probably.
I want you to tell me exactly what happened with those two other than they moved on or Sturgill moved on.
Best I know he fired them both pretty abruptly. Kevin had been with him since Sunday Valley and before. I dunno what happened with Kevin, my assumption on Lil Joe is his arrogance wouldn't let a guitar player that was better than him be in the band. Kevin appears to have gotten over it based on his social media comments of recent. At first he seemed pretty chapped.
Bonnaroo June 2015 ( three off the rail - turned to 2. Then he threw water on me.) Ryman 2015 - 10/30 ( Row M ) Ryman 2015 - 11/01 ( top of the balcony ) Tivoli Theater - Chattanooga 5/2016 ( mid way up ) Ryman - 10/2016 ( 3rd row ) Forecastle - July 2017 ( made my way close. For a few songs. ) Bonnaroo June 2018 ( one off the rail ) Sturgill's 40th birthday
Kevin chose to go with Margo Price's backing band and Sturgill's always had a plan. I'm sure Joe had warning that it would be his last tour.
Idk. For all the talk about arena acoustics, I just wanna go drink too much beer and hear him play the guitar loud as hell.
I've done similar with bands that I liked but I'm not going into an appreciation thread for a chick and saying I don't think she's hot anymore. Repeatedly.
I think I turned during the arrogant phase for Strug (before the album). He seems to have come back to a better place with where he is in music, and he is more tolerable for me as a fan. He really didn't want to carry the "outlaw" country crown and honestly seemed to get a bit too pissed off about it. Not uncommon for an artistic genius, I'll say, which he absolutely is. I'll still go to his shows, at some point probably, just not in an arena and I'm too old to do festivals, so I may never see him again
Very solid list. I can't do festivals anymore, too old. I was at the first Bonnarro though, before the hype if that gets me any street cred. I also didn't see a WSP show at the first Bonnaroo, not my thing.
I was about three deep behind this guy for this show. Probably a top 3 all time show for me. Only club show I recall not leaving my spot to get a beer.
Saw Stapelton two years ago in an arena and it was great. Luke Combs, Tool, Garth, etc all did great shows in arenas.
No you? I mean I know you're not a Luke or Tool fan and I'm in no way comparing them to Sturgill. I was just pointing out arena shows that were not shitty to me.
They sounded great and the shows were fun, granted Garth was like 2 decades ago. You're free to stick to your "arena shows are shitty" opinion. I'm not trying to change it.
You sure about that firing? https://www.drivinncryin.com/blog/where-is-sturgill-simpsons-former-guitarist-laur-joamets-now "We’ve been trying to keep it under wraps to avoid the inevitable rumor mill but last night’s gig in Okeechobee FL officially marks the beginning of a new chapter. We’re all very sad to say that after nearly four years Laur Joamets has decided it’s time to move on to pursue greener pastures and a gig with little more wiggle room for him to stretch out. It’s been a pleasure and an honor watching him grow into one of the baddest guitar players on the planet and everyone in the band wishes him the best in his future endeavors. To be completely honest, I realized last night how much I’ve missed playing electric guitar without even knowing it so I guess as they say, “it was time”. I’m also proud to say that Little Joe recently became the proud owner of a US green card and is working towards officially becoming a “Muhrican”. Everyone in the band wishes him the absolute best in both his life and career and we cant wait to see what he does with his incredible talents."
Garth is socially like a serial killer but if you can't enjoy If Tomorrow Never Comes or Neon Moon idfwy
To me he's got a good country voice and is a stark contrast to the bro country that was all over the place. Regardless I wasn't trying to compare any of them. Just listing arena shows I've been too that weren't shitty.
Besides imo, there aren't a lot of venues that sound just amazing acoustically and that's not really why I go to live shows. If I want to really enjoy the sound I'll listen to them at home (probably on vinyl since I'm a newbie record snob). Whiskey Myers at The Shed in Maryville was a not a great sounding show but it wasn't horrible and it was damn sure one of the funniest shows I've been to in awhile.
Wore out the Garth Double Live CD in high school. My mom may be in the top tier of Garth fans. Listened to him many of times in the car with her. saw him at Bridgestone Arena for the flood relief deal. Great show. Don't care to pay to see him again as he is playing Neyland Stadium in a few weeks. My mom asked if I wanted to go when tix went on sale. Said no because Sturgill hasn't announced his tour yet and would rather spend money on that and basketball tickets.
Yea, listening to cassettes in your trailer is tons better than seeing a show at a club. Much betta sound quality I agree, Whiskey Myers is a heckuva comedian.
