I really like Gates when they're on point and everything is the way it should be. The downside is that will happen maybe 5% of the time, so can't really disagree. Jack Stacks being #2 sticks out a lot, too.
I don’t agree with their top 10 but no 2 people in KC should ever agree on a top 10. What I will say is that is a very well written and researched article. I’ve read basically anything published by the KCBBQS and they nail it in there on the history. I always have a soft spot for Bryant’s and Gate’s knowing they can trace their roots back to Henry Perry.
Any of you semen dumpsters going to the KC Oktoberfest today? I'll be there thrusting meat into my mouth and swallowing quality beer.
Fescoe does a KC history podcast (luckily he doesn’t talk much in it) with the lady that ran that #SaveThePaseo campaign so she’s obviously biased but she knows her stuff in KC history. So the name change was crap to begin with. To change street names there are 2 means. Get signatures and take it to a vote (they could never get enough signatures) or 75% of the residents of the street need to approve the change (they couldn’t get anywhere close to it). So there’s been a pretty vocal crowd calling us out for not having anything honoring MLK Jr, which is a good point, it’s lame we are basically the only major metro area that doesn’t honor MLK Jr. So the city council made a task force, came up with some ideas. The 2 overwhelming options were to name the new airport MLK (people call it kci instead of mci all the time anyways) or to rename 63rd street. Renaming the Paseo was on the list (I think as the 3rd option). Well, politics happen and certain churches on the Paseo wanted the name changed and certain council people were running for mayor and votes were at stake, so the council held an emergency vote and passed the name change 8-4. IIRC, Mayor Lucas voted for the name change but was team airport and made a statement that he didn’t agree with the council stepping in doing something the voters disagreed with. And then obviously they got more than enough signatures to put it up for a vote and the rename passed by a landslide. So as we know the Paseo is one of the oldest and most historic roadways in the country outside the east coast. George Kessler was the architect that was given the task of “beautifying the city” and moving us past “cowtown” so in the late 1800s he laid out a boulevard system to connect the city and promote growth specifically to the south. We all know he was inspired by Spanish architecture and design and that’s why we have parkways like Paseo, Ward, Swope. The first fountain in KC was built on the Paseo because it was so popular on the weekends and Kessler wanted a more beautiful way to water the horses on the road. The plaza, the city of fountains, “Paris of the Plains”, the southern expansion of the city, all of that are attributed to Kessler and his first work, the Paseo. Now in my idealist view all 70% of the voters understood the history and that’s why they were motivated and it had nothing to do with racism. I wish they would of went ahead and added “change 63rd to MLK Jr” to the vote. 31st, 39th, 63rd, 75th those are major streets that no one gives an F about the name (well maybe 39th) I understand the difficulty of having to do it on both sides of state line but renaming 63rd shouldn’t be hard.
