I’ve seen several mentions of this in passing by industry nerds over the past year or so but I always thought it was just trolling. Apparently, this will be our HL3....
Watched the trailer and it actually looks kind of good which makes me hate Valve that much more. I hope Gabe Newell gets syphilis.
Bunch of negative nancies. Trailer looks tight. Shame you have to have like $2000 in hardware to play it.
This will fail and it should. For some reason Valve thinks the success of HL and the desire to see it through is based on the tech they delivered at the time and not the grand adventure they put at our fingertips. I’ll watch aYT vid just to see how it plays out. At least I can put this dream to rest
I mean, if you’re being serious then this is a weak response. HL2 really kinda started the movement of cinematic story driven FPS games and really had no equal until Bioshock was released. The fact that the game was left on a cliffhanger doesn’t help the fact that fans wanna see it play out. the trailer looks neat but seriously only 1% of steam users are equipped with VR so this ends up feeling like they’re holding the story hostage. It’s a shit move. video games are an entertainment medium. imagine if you’re favorite film or television show ended on a cliffhanger and you waited over a decade for news like this. It’s not cool
They’re not holding any continuing story from HL2 hostage. Alyx takes place between the two HL games I believe.
Yeah but the fact that they spent time, money and effort to create this while you have a generation of gamers who are slipping into old age waiting for HL3 is really insulting. They could’ve made something portal related and not only would the world be set up for a better VR experience it would’ve come with I guarantee no backlash. It just feels like a gimmick
Honestly I think any kind of HL3 would fail to live up to the hype and would disappoint. I can understand why they haven’t made it after this long. And after the shit show of GoT I’m of the opinion that no ending is better than a bad one. Portal VR would be extremely cool but also not the best introduction to VR given the tendency of people to get motion sick.
for years ive been saying we wont get hl3 bc its impossible for it to meet expectations. but this looks cool and probably a really great game for those of us with a pc that can run it it might get me to buy vr. but also i was planning on getting psvr2 anyway and im sure it will find its way there.
Game looks amazing, it won’t fail because it’s a bad game (it will “fail” because it’s VR and the gaming community doesn’t embrace VR), but the community-built modding/resources/tools are going to create the next wave of VR mods that become amazing games and genres. I’m cheap as fuck and won’t be buying VR just to play it, but this is exactly the type of game and community driven mods that will move the VR needle forward in a meaningful way. It’s very smart to not name it HL3, too.
I would like to play it but I may not for years because this is the first VR game that has even half way interested me and I'm not buying a VR headset just for this. As far as not calling it HL3, it isn't. This isn't a continuation of the story that they left hanging all those years ago.
I don’t think this is true. Most sentiments about VR is that it’s really cool but it’s in its infancy and has a high barrier to entry. It hasn’t been rejected out of the gate like 3D was.
I'm probably buying the Valve Index because of this. I've wanted VR to play beatsaber and now I'm just like.... tep
Really cool doesn't necessarily mean not gimmicky. VR will be a niche thing for the next 15-20 years imo. Maybe one day it will be embraced, but I doubt it's any time soon. Most people just don't want to wear big ass gear on their head to play a video game.
it's already making strides, though. Breaking it out to independent quality headsets that don't need to be wired to a PC and don't need sensors set up all over the room is a giant step in the right direction. my biggest issue with VR when I had it was the set up and being wired to the PC.
That's definitely a big step in the right direction. I just don't see it replacing regular gaming for me ever. Maybe eventually it will be a cool little side thing that I'll enjoy, though
I own a PSVR and it’s fucking awesome. Can’t justify $999 plus building a new gaming rig for this though. Pray it comes out on PSVR2 on PS5
Three questions: Were the half-life games ever on console? How likely is it that this new half-life game is released on the new consoles? And finally, if the new Xbox console doesn’t have VR as they say, would that mean the VR only half-life game only be on PC and PS4?
pretty sure there are already parents submitted for wireless units presumably for PS5 virtually guaranteed there will be a new iteration for next gen
The Orange Box had HL2 and some episodes I believe. unlikely IMO, at least not initially. Valve is in the VR hardware game now. Probably PC only but yeah
Tried to watch MKfireandice and got through his first two hour episode of him mostly sweeping and decided to watch a story synapses. Pretty incredible looking game/gameplay and what seems to be a very good story and more importantly satisfying story.
I was watching Arekkz walkthrough but it had this like weird skipping thing that was really bothering me. Wish I had a VR that could play this.
Same skipping on the one I watched. Really couldn’t get passed the skipping and the in general wanting to pick everything up and play with it so I mailed in and watched a 35 minute breakdown that got its point across
Guess it's something to do with the VR. I'm still salty at Valve for leaving us hanging for 13 God damn years but I also am curious about the story of this game.
Has anyone played it yet? I'm debating making the plunge. I love my oculus rift S. I couldn't justify 1000 bucks for the index and it doesn't even have inside out tracking
Glad to hear it. Feel free to share more thoughts/opinions on your experience as you get further into it.
So I've only played the first couple of levels but its very intuitive. The gravity gloves are nice in terms of VR because you can just point, grab, flick your wrist and then catch it. You store ammo and supplies by dropping it into your pack over your shoulder and then when you need to reload you reach over your shoulder and grab a magazing. I'm on the oculus rift and when I need to eject a magazine I press the A button, then use the other hand to load it and then you can either release the slide rail with the b button or manually do it with your other hand. My play area is only about 6 x 8 feet, I'm debating moving furniture in another room to make a bigger space but getting around is easy with the controls set up but VR is so much more fun when you can walk up to a corner and then peek around it. My problem is my play area is right next to my bourbon collection. Haven't knocked any off the shelf yet but I've hit it a few times lol.
This game definitely has its jump scare moments and then these moments of oh shit oh shit oh shit run away, like when a giant or armored headcrab jumps out at you and you're in an enclosed space. I've gotten to where I'm fighting combine soldiers which is a little harder. I have a pistol now that I can toggle three round burst on and off, a shotgun and then I just discovered grenades. It's fun to lob a grenade although the hand motions are hard meaning I try and throw it further in the game but I'm afraid of actually letting go of my touch controllers. Going to start using the wrist straps now. Also takes some getting used to but in firefights hiding around a barrier or corner and then peeking around the corner (leaning in real life) shooting, stepping back behind the corner and reloading. This game is incredibly addicting.
I have to say that the after credit scene is very fulfilling in a certain type of way and makes sense wrt the context of this game but idk if I necessarily “like” what it does
Hey sorry man, I just now saw this. I honestly just had it in the background while I was teleworking. I enjoy CohhCarnage on Twitch a lot for a lot of his playthroughs. He moves at a pretty decent pace, only save scums in certain games, and streams variety. He also gets access to a ton of games early. He’s not the best gamer, but he’s easy to watch. If I miss a stream, his YouTube updates quickly and is also an anthology on completed video games. Probably over 400-500 playthroughs if tons of games. If I don’t like some of the games he plays (which I don’t) I just skip that playthrough until the next.
I watched a guy on YouTube and his obsession with picking everything up made me fast forward. Got a great idea of how the game plays, what the story was and what we look like going forward tho. Really wish I could play it
That was one of the most fun games I have ever played. I'm sad that its over. I hope they continue to make VR games like that.
