Kiffin really would fit in marvelously at Ole Miss. The blend of nepotism, arrogance, and general disdain for authority is as Ole Miss as it gets.
After his offensive display against Washington it probably did. We’d have lost by 21 with that kind of performance against Clemson.
you are crazy. he ran a solid unc program into the ground. killed the program. so yeah let’s throw him into the sec west. i get that he was awesome for y’all but he’s absolute garbage and no power 5 (or respectable group of 5) program should ever employ that clown. get a grip man
I suppose he may not have “caused them,” but Tennessee was penalized by actions of coaches employed by Kiffin, according to my friarjuggsian research: https://www.espn.com/college-footba...ends-tennessee-volunteers-probation-two-years
My bad. Lost a close one to Clemson I. Close ACC title game with a chance to make the playoffs if they won
they committed tons of secondary violations while he was there. Wyoming hired that Willie Mack Garza dude earlier this year and he got fired for getting a DUI during the middle of the season
I can't imagine being somebody with even a passing interest in college football and thinking Larry Fedora took UNC to the playoffs.
Even if we beat Clemson in the Championshio game that year we weren’t going to the playoff. We were 11-1 and still ranked 10 in the CFP because we didn’t play anybody and lost to an abysmal 3-9 USC team in our only OOC test.
It's called the '80s. Ford was president, Nixon was in the White House, and Fedora was running up the score in the college playoffs.
1.Good morning. I'll be honest. I have no idea what today brings, if anything. So hop on and enjoy the ride, I suppose. An industry source vehemently denied Chase's report regarding two prominent Arkansas boosters flagging/vetoing the Razorbacks' potential hiring of FAU coach Lane Kiffin. What does that mean? I don't know. It means it's getting closer to crunch time. The source said Jerry Jones, the Cowboys owner and one of the boosters in question, is long-time friends with Kiffin's father, long-time NFL assistant Monte Kiffin. Chase's source, of course, didn't make that up. My personal opinion, from parsing through all of the information and misinformation, is if Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek wants Kiffin, he'll ultimately get the authority to hire Kiffin. But I think there are reservations there. Speaking of, I got the impression from talking to sources last night that there was some momentum and traction in terms of Ole Miss' pursuit of Kiffin. I don't believe, as of Wednesday night, Ole Miss felt super comfortable just yet. Keith Carter is a pretty conservative guy, I'm told. (He and I are amiable. I like him, but our conversations have never really gone beyond surface level. I can't say I know him.) I am told he views Kiffin with a cautious eye, though he is cognizant of the fan interest and of the tickets a Kiffin hire would sell. So, we'll see. As of this morning, I'm just not sure what I think of that scenario moving forward. It could gain momentum and happen or Ole Miss could go in another direction. Either possibility is on the table, in my opinion. There's still a lot of buzz about Charlotte's Will Healy. I was told by an industry source Wednesday night, flatly, it (Healy to Ole Miss) will not happen. The buzz is still there, though. I will say this one thing about Healy. Per sources, Healy had real momentum to Missouri as of Wednesday. However, Healy, per sources, told the Missouri people he'd want to bring his entire Charlotte staff to CoMo. Per sources, that didn't go over well. I wouldn't think that would go over well with Carter/Ole Miss, either, if it came to that. More as the day develops. 2.As of this morning, I continue to hear Ole Miss will wait on Mike Norvell for an answer. The buzz out there is Lane Kiffin and Billy Napier are the next names on Keith Carter's list. I talked to Gene Williams from Warchant.com this morning. Gene's as connected as FSU as one can be. He had some interesting things to say. He said the Bob Stoops-to-FSU rumors won't go away, but he's very skeptical. He said he would put the percentage chance of the Seminoles hiring Mike Norvell at about 75 percent. He gave the Stoops stuff about a 10 percent chance, acknowledging there's just enough buzz to prevent him from ruling it completely out. He pointed out FSU has some financial issues this time around and admitted that Norvell doesn't excite the Florida State fanbase. He expected, if it's Norvell, that news would leak Sunday and there would be some sort of official announcement on Monday. Arkansas sources continue to maintain there's a booster division regarding Kiffin. Industry sources vehemently deny that. Who's right? I don't know. I don't cover Arkansas so I don't know the boosters in question. (If any of them would like to hire my daughter in three years, holler.) More, obviously, as we get it. 3. Two sources have told me in the last few minutes that Billy Napier's candidacy to be the next Ole Miss coach has picked up significant steam this morning. Here's a little speculation: There's a not-zero chance that Pete Goulding would join Napier on an Ole Miss staff. They are certainly connected. Napier is also tight with Tyler Siskey, though I don't know if Siskey would stay at Ole Miss.
Never quite understand the USM love for Fedora either. I know he had the one good year, but the other three were yuck. I mean the guy lost 3 in a row to UAB, and that was Neil Calloway's UAB, not Bill Clark's.
Especially since there have only been 10 teams to make it in 5 years. It's not like there's a lot to remember.
Don't really want Napier in Oxford, like him and he's a great recruiter, but if it means somebody takes Pete Golding, oh yes please yes.
Fedora rode an NFL caliber QB (Austin Davis) for four years and capped it with a really solid season when he was a senior. His inattention to detail and recruiting left them with nothing and they were promptly one of the worst teams in the FBs after Davis left.
0-12 was after him, not before. He took over after Bower, which tells you while the program might have fallen a bit, it was still in decent shape.
life gets busy and it’s been a bit. He was a score or two away from doing it though. That was my fault
Napier would be a really underwhelming hire for ole miss imo. If that’s who they end up with they should have just stuck with Luke for another season.
Not true at all. While I wouldn't be thrilled with Napier, posts like this prove how little people kept up with Matt Luke.
Not really. We couldn’t even get all scholarships filled the last two years under Bower. The program was about to tank under him even though he won 7 or 8 games his last season. the best coach we had since Bower was Todd Monken. Better than Fedora. Monken did an amazing job after Ellis Johnson
Anyway, back on track after my UNC fuck up. I still think Bill Clark would be a great hire for Ole Miss
Probably true. I don’t follow OM closely so will defer to you guys but a fan was telling me the other day about how young the team was and how Luke was close to turning the corner (this was before the egg bowl).
Yep. And I don't mean this as a shot at OM, but I'm kind of surprised he isn't willing to stay in Lafayette a little longer and be selective. That's a good job to be able to win consistently at in the Sun Belt. SEC West is just such a meat grinder right now. To take on an Arkansas, OM, or MSU.
Just to get one last dig at Fedora in, this is one my biggest pet peeves about his time at UNC. He spent the first couple years blaming the sanctions at any chance he could get. Then the first year that we had a full allotment of scholarships he didn’t even use them all. He basically self sanctioned after spending the first few years blaming the lack of depth.
That fan doesn't know shit, then. We were nowhere close to turning a corner. He went 6-6, 5-7, and 4-8 with extremely talented rosters. He was in completely over his head.
hopefully Napier learned from Dabo that hiring your friends almost never works out, especially since the fan base will have less patience in that scenario
I am somewhat surprised that Scott Satterfields name hasn’t come up in this or the Arkansas coaching search. Everyone is all in on Healy who has gone 5-6 and 7-5 the last couple seasons at Austin Peay and Charlotte but no love for the guy who had App St as a wagon and then completely flipped the culture and results at UL in his first year there.
