Going to see Lighthouse tonight. From the posts ITT I’ll probably just make a list of A24 films and start going through them. The ones I have seen I really enjoyed and hadn’t connected the dots on them being from the same company trailer for Uncut Gems played before Joker and I was pretty excited for it. Sandler is better as a serious actor
GF and I didn’t watch any trailers or read anything ab Lighthouse prior to going last night. Just what I saw ITT. Giving it a 6/10 and only that high because I like weird, dark shit. GF works in film and is an indie fanatic and said walking out “I guess I’m gonna have to start watching trailers of movies you pick beforehand now” Dafoe and Pattinson had great chemistry. Probably the extent of what the movie had going for it.
They are showing an advance screening of this tomorrow at IU. Saw via their Facebook stories weekly newsfeed thing. Probably should just stop watching those, because I'll never be able to go to any of those events now. So you don't think it's like Fargo? Didn't love Swiss Army Man. Do you mean for Peanut Butter Falcon? I saw that on the short list for best picture.
Midsommar absolutely blew me away. It was so bizarrely fucked up and powerful. Florence Pugh was amazing in it. I was just creeped out and unsettled the entire film. I looked over at my wife halfway through and asked her what she thought, and she just said "I can't look away." we haven't even seen Hereditary next so looking forward to renting that over the weekend.
I thought hereditary was much better than midsommar it'll be interesting to see someone's views when watched in opposite order
It was a very nice movie. I enjoyed seeing the different cultural traditions, especially around death.
Watched Midsommar yesterday. Had already seen Hereditary. I liked Midsommar but thought Hereditary was much better as well.
We watched Hereditary last night. I think I actually preferred Midsommar. I loved them both but Midsommar definitely drew me in more. I think maybe because I'm only a little bit older than the protagonists in Midsommar so I was able to relate to the characters a little more than Collette's character in Midsommar. I don't know. I thought they were both really good. I especially loved Anne Dowd's character. Looking forward to Aster's next one.
not an A24 movie but I feel like it fits this thread's vibe just finished The Nightingale, and boy, that is something
Finally getting around to Midsommar. I’m 40 minutes in and it’s already one of the more messed up films I’ve seen in a while. But I love it so far.
in a similar vein, i watched The Farewell last night and thought it was really good. Definitely one of the best movies I saw of 2019 films.
Watched mid90s and hot summer nights recently. mid90s is really fucking good and HSN is so fuckin depressing
Watched Midsommar yesterday and that was the most uncomfortable film I’ve ever watched. I may have to pass on the sequel
Spoiler Haven’t even considered that but the first thing I went over in my head after credits rolled was how well he thought out his victims and how disposable and awful they all were so to speak
This is a very apt description. What it did, it did better than anything I’ve ever watched. I’m just not so sure that’s for me. I’m incredibly good with feeling of the film, it’s just the setting that was so unsettling
My wife didn't like it because she thought it lacked punch. I was uncomfortable the entire movie. I was so unnerved. What Aster does well is take a relatable thing (family tension with parents/kids or relationship issues) pulls it out and layers it with unspeakable horror and makes it agonizing. I love it.
I’ve never seen hereditary but immediately after I kinda wanted to jump right into it but as soon as I loaded it up I didn’t think I was up for it. I absolutely adore tension in media. Rather it film, television, video games or literature, it’s my favorite. Midsommar nails tension in a way that’s just brutal and I loved the feeling of it.. it was just a bit much for me with the cult aspect of it all. it did honestly make it easier to swallow the more unlikable the major players became
Spoiler figured he did it to form a bond with her to make her feel that she was part of them. Or could be part of them. The whole orphan thing etc.
This looks nice. As much as I’ve loved the recent A24 horrors, it’ll be nice see that production title before a movie and not be overcome with dread.
